BG Olds was my dad's wing commander in the 555th TFW and GEN Daniel "Chappie" James, the first black four-star, was his squadron commander in the 23rd TFS. BG Olds and Chappie were great friends and known affectionately as "Black Man and Robin," two of the finest officers the USAF has ever had. My dad referred to BG Olds as a "crazy sonofabitch" and "one helluva fighter pilot and officer." I met Chappie when he was a Lieutenant Colonel and I was 10 years old. He was one of the kindest and nicest men I've ever met and my dad referred to him as one of the finest officers he's ever known and his officers and airmen loved him.

Robin just really connects with his audience and had done so much in his life he can go for hours and hours. I really love his sense of humor and his philosophy of "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission."

Get his book, "Fighter Pilot" . Great story about a great man. And he passed up a chance to attain great public notice by refusing to let a famous author do a book about him. And likely a movie. Incredible great American!!!!

@@COIcultist Indeed, Olds even said "Miraculously, I was never able to record another victory." In an interview after his death, his daughter said he would erase his name off the daily mission board. She estimated he flew somewhere around 155 missions....when you got rotated out after 100. He was one of a kind and we need more if him!

After I retired from the Seabees in 2003, I’ve been catching up on Bios of larger than life individuals such as Gen Olds. That caliber of leader was common in his day in all branches. Today not so common. After reading up on Robin Olds I regret not joining the Air Force. Awesome video thank you for sharing.

Aerospace Utah: Thank you for publishing this video. Even with Christina's publishing of "Fighter Pilot", General Olds has not received his proper credit and role in the history of defining our modern Air Force. Our culture, our programs, our airman mindsets are beholden to his actions, influences and legacy. Thanks again, and if more are available publish!

I was at Ubon in 67 while Gen. Olds was the wing commander. I was an air traffic controller. I do recall when we were recovering a flight where he was the flight leader. During a lull in transmissions, he screamed over the frequency "SHUT UP." I never forgot it. I guess he was hearing some chatter that we could not. No doubt who was in charge.

What a great guy. Not like Chuck Yeager or Steve Richie one that Navy guy who Trumpty Dumpty pardoned. I just wish they had a better microphone. I’m hard of hearing and missed some of the audio. Too many years around jets . Robin Olds was truly one of the greats. Little ego, loved his subordinates, and loved people. Not many like him.
