      @@Viettzz If you are asking about the GL2000s, I would say that ever since pairing them with the XDuoo MT604 (they are power-hungry beasts and only perform correctly when given 2watts or more), I will not be looking to buy another set of home headphones (I have just purchased the Harmonicdyne Zeus for when I'm out and about). I have been in love and awe of the Stax sound for 40years and will eventually buy a pair. But following the Zeos and BGGA reviews of the GL1200s, I may just have to take a chance on them, because of the difference they bring to the sound presentation, in the same manner Stax do. I'm sure Focals, Abyss, and HiFi Man are all superb-sounding cans and are well worth the investment if that sound is your thing, but for me, for now, tubed GL2Ks are just peachy. And when I can afford it, I will first buy a Stax set up and then the GL1200s.

    Ok so I ordered the GL1200s they are good. But the silver ribbons they sent me make static noises. It appears linsoul and goldplanar are about to screw me on the replacements. They are already trying to make an excuse that I didn't notify them fast enough, but I did when I first got them with no response and I just forgot until recently. Been about 3 months. They want me to send them the actual headphones so they can "repair" it. But the headphones are not the problem. The ribbons are, the gold ones work perfect. This is them trying to make it inconvenient for me to continue. Its very shady and manipulative business practice if there is no incompetence involved on the part of customer service.

    The GL2000 fiasco is a bummer. I have a set and was quite unimpressed with their stock tuning, but I can't really say if that's just down to taste or if I got a "bad set." That being said they took to EQ better than any headphone I have ever owned and after much tweaking they are now what I would consider endgame level so I'm not going to complain about how they sounded out of the box.
    I'm super curious about these but not enough to spend the money required for their setup. I think I'm out of the game until new tech like this becomes more common and doesn't need insane shit to drive it.

    I remember watching the GL2000 vid, then seeing DMS's vid. He explained that they sound compressed. When you described the room "breathing" im fairly confident that's compression, this would also explain the amount of "detail" he hears in the smaller sounds. Maybe Zeos likes compression, that's fine. HOWEVER it is NOT normally a good trait.

    • @TheGrelots
      @TheGrelots 3 роки тому

      Breathing/pumping happens when attack and release are not set properly on a compressor. That simply cannot happen with acoustic “compression”. It’s just a matter of quiet sounds being louder and vice versa, no time based trickery happens.

    • @vsarrow5276
      @vsarrow5276 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheGrelots I just quoted what he said, he also mentioned a deeper presence (I chose a bad quote keeping in mind what you said). I think "breathing" was used more abstractly for larger presence. Later in the vid he mentions vinyl records being a problem too since the smaller imperfections would stand out too much, like those things would be elevated also making me think some kind of compression occurring through the headphones. I don't have them and don't know the most about this stuff but I wouldn't be shocked if Zeos has a preference for compression knowing what DMS explained about the GL2000s. There's nothing wrong with that, he should enjoy those headphones, however I think taking his opinion with a pitch of sault isn't the worst idea on this one knowing about the GL2000s.

  • @misterMusicify
    @misterMusicify 3 роки тому +2

    Got a few questions for you: Let me start by saying that I design ribbon headphones as a hobby.
    I've tried the RAAL, and left unimpressed, partially because in their load box somewhere, they essentially have a low pass filter.
    They have a low pass filter because they need to prevent too extreme excursion from the ribbon, as they use a folded ribbon as their drivers. Too much ribbon excursion, common in extreme bass heavy songs, results in the de-corrugation and tensioning of a corrugated/folded ribbon like the RAAL uses.
    And from what I gather, the Goldplanar also uses a folded ribbon. If that's the case, you can see this by looking at the ribbon itself, it will look zig zaggy.
    One question I have is: does the goldplanar have a bass filter too? Or does it use some other method to prevent de-tensioning of their ribbon.
    Secondly, I'm wondering about the frame of the headphones. One thing I've realized, in working with ribbons, is that you 'feel' subbass, even though the driver isn't exactly creating it.
    The ribbon itself is between two magnets, and the flow of current through it is what gets us the sound response. But in many cases, the cable used to send current through the ribbon is adjacent to the driver, on the other side of one of the magnets. In many cases, this cable is bolted tight to the magnet, because if it wasn't, it'd vibrate freely (for the exact same reason why the ribbon itself vibrates, as the same current flows through it). But attaching it to the magnet or the frame to prevent free vibrations essentially causes the frame itself to vibrate, resulting in, for many ribbon users, an odd, inexplicably, yet sometimes satisfying subbass response through the frame itself vibrating. Do you observe such a thing in the Goldplanar?
    I have no questions about mids and treble, because even the worst ribbons can create beautiful mids and treble, but the bass will always be wonky in my experience.
    If you listen to a complex bass heavy song, with very heavy bass as well as clearly audible mids or highs, I'm wondering if you notice any sort of odd phasing with the bass. In my experience with ribbons, if a ribbon is allowed to have strong bass, and strong excursion by implication, in many cases the high bass excursion physically moves the driver at the same frequency as the bass, sometimes excursing the driver enough to seemingly change the 'origin' of the sound, resulting in perceived volume oscilliation at a frequency similar to that of the underlying bass. I'm not sure if you've noticed any such thing. It doesn't happen on the raal because of their aggressive, even too aggressive filtering of bass.
    You can test this by playing whatever music you usually play, but also play a loud 10 or 20hz tone alongside it, and if you can hear the perceived audio volume being modulated by the bass frequency, that confirms it occurs.
    If you do indeed find such a thing, that's not entirely bad. In many headphones I've designed, including a ribbon design that I hope to publicize along with 3d printable parts soon, I don't corrugate the ribbon at all, and instead use elastic to allow for extreme excursion without the risk of de-tensioning. And in my tests of these designs, I can clearly hear this bass modulation, as well as subbass response through a frame vibration (not to mention that the high driver excursion makes it so that you can actually feel the bass 'breeze' on your ears from the driver motion), and these sound 'artifacts' do serve to make it sound a lot more fun and interesting, though of course not as clinical as the raal.

    • @enjoshi-godrez8775
      @enjoshi-godrez8775 3 роки тому +2

      What comments can you make about the fragility of these ribbon tweeters? Both the gl1200 and raals can allow the removal of the drivers without any disassembly, and raal sells their replacement. Gold planar as of now doesn't, so I am very concerned about how long a headphone that costs $1400 is supposed to last. I guess that's the risk of going the Chinese ghetto root.

    • @misterMusicify
      @misterMusicify 3 роки тому +1

      @@enjoshi-godrez8775 First of all, these aren't actually ribbon tweeters. They're corrugated to the point that they can create good, albeit relatively quiet, low frequencies.
      I'll say that for the most part, ribbons are probably the most delicate of all. Holding the device wrong and accidentally push your finger into the ribbon. It'll snap in half.
      Whereas a dynamic driver, you can throw around with no consequence, and planars are pretty resilient too (though I've seen catastrophic planar failures where the magnets get un-stuck from the frame and rip through the diaphragm), and of course electrostatics are pretty delicate, but not as delicate as ribbons.
      That said, as long as a ribbon is handled with care, you probably won't break it. They may get de-tensioned if you accidentally lightly press on one, which is pretty bad and can ruin the sound quality. But as long as you keep your fingers away from the driver, they're safe.
      As for replaceability, Raal certainly does make it easy by selling extra drivers.
      That said, if you've got some technical knowledge, you can make your own ribbon drivers. In fact, ribbons are probably the easiest and cheapest drivers to DIY, as all you really need is some thin aluminum foil (maybe 15 - 10 microns or less if possible), and maybe some gears or a toothpaste crimper to corrugate the ribbon. (Second easiest, surprisingly enough, would be electrostatic, which just need mylar, proper tensioning, and a 'conductive dust' to create your own driver).

My general fear was not just from catastrophic failure like any other speaker designe when pushed to hard, but them simply wearing down over time (like they have a shelf life), and will eventually just stop working, which generally doesn't happen to dynamic or planar headphones for several years and somtimes decades.

    After 6 months of owning these I want to change my review... 1) Buy the Nemal Raal to 4 pin XLR adapter plug AND 2) Buy the Raal converter box OR 3) Buy the Schiit Jot R and what you get is basically an open back, rather than an open baffle, Raal Sr1a. The tonality and detail is mostly just like Raal's and SIGNIFICANTLY different than the GL1200 with the stock converter box. It really sounds like an entirely different headphone once you stop using the GL1200 converter box. The converter box has a crazy amount of EQ and it doesn't do a very good job. Its just a resistor array and is not tuned all that great. At the very least, the sr1a converter box is WAY more detailed. Not saying you should buy this over the SR1A, but this is a more comfortable option. Id stick with Raal if you favor quality and detail, but the comfort of the Raal leaves a lot to be desired. The Chinese 100% tried to copy Raal with this product, and didn't do a very good job with the converter box because, in terms of detail and transient speed, it leaves a bit to be desired. However, the box can be bypassed and what they did right was the housing... the spaciousness and comfort on these is quite good. If you want pure quality with these, just bypass the converter box OR buy the Jot R. Simple solution. Zeos seems to like thick, bassy and warm sound, and the EQ in the GL1200 converter box adds a lot of warmth to the audio, but its not super great at what it does. Another thing this does better than the Raal is to position the driver's sweet spot RIGHT OVER YOUR EAR. I cannot stress enough how much of a factor that is with ribbons. The raal headphone sounds amazing mostly only when you find that glorious sweetspot, however this one sounds amazing ALL the time. There is a 3rd option to bypass the converter box and that is to buy the Raal HSA 1B amp, but its also $4k and offers diminishing investments on your return. However, since Zeos is comparing these to stax, its only fair if you factor in costs of electrostatic amps required to run stax, and that runs you up to near HSA 1B pricing if you opt for the gold standard in solid state amps, the KGSSHV.

    Zeos, I received my pair this week and I don't agree with your analysis. My electrostats sound more pleasant to me and are faster, more detailed, more clean and more crisp. This type of headphone is for people who don't mind slightly laid back sound and prefer really thick and full bodied sound over technicalities. These do sound pleasant, but I wouldn't say they dethrone stax. However, you are right in saying the tonality is pot on - it doesn't seem to be coloring the sound much and I do love that aspect of it. I just find more pleasure listening to electrostatic heaphones and don't think this will dethrone stax lineup. If anything, this could potentially be compared favorably to the thicker sounding 007s, but I haven't heard those and won't presume such a thing. When I put these on I miss the laser sharpness of my electrostats, but alternatively, when I put on my electrostats I do find myself missing the full sound of the GL1200s a little bit. However, I am more drawn to the electrostat's precision. After having owned both I would say these ARE better than the GL2000s, and I would say by a lot too, so its most definitely worht the upgrade. In terms of detail, they're probably not super far apart. I run these at 20% volume on Hypex based NC502MP amp and at 25% volume on a class A VMV A1 amp. It doesnt take as much power as they claim. Its more about having quality over quantity.

    So I picked these up. At first I wasn't too sure how much I liked them when comparing them to the Clear MG. However, the more I listened to them the better they became. Velour pads are definitely the way to go. Overall these things are impressive. I see what you mean about them not having a signature or sound stage. It is just true to whatever the audio is.
    In terms of staging of the different frequencies..it is almost like each frequency range has this millimeter wide stage, lower frequencies being closer and higher being further. BUT they also transfer through each stage when needed. Just a very interesting delivery.
    For gaming audio I would recommend you specify for casual or competitive. While the imaging and staging are more than great for competitive gaming, the lows and mids tend to echo(?) causing you to not be able to hear footsteps or some of the higher frequency sounds that are often important. I guess what I am trying to say is that the lows and mids tend to envelope the sound when lots of noises are combined in gaming.
    I also picked up the GL2000s and didn't care for them too much. My copy had 0 sound stage and everything sounded blended together with very little separation.

The volume on the receiver is damned near max (-1 db volume level, which is stupid high). I tried a Carver M-1.0T 2-channel amp through the Denon's preamp outs, but that was actually a step backwards both in sound quality and volume level... which is odd.
    One area where I differ from both Zeos and Resolve, is that I MUCH prefer the perforated leather pads to the veleur. To me, the veleur pads deaden the sound and roll everything off. Not sure if it's my 55-year-old ears, or the difference in preamp/amplifier, but the veleur pads are a no go.
    I intend to do some amp rolling... which sadly is more expensive than pad rolling.

    Sessions from the 17th ward - is like the case for DSD (like any dsd, even the lowest one).

    From the build and design, these are basically ULTRA INSTICT DT-150s!

    What do you recommend for wireless ear buds I have skull Candy sesh and the sound is bad and the battery life sucks

      Samsung galaxy buds+ they're fairly good quality in build and sound. Stuck with SBC or AAC codec unfortunately. But battery life I've yet to run out in a day of listening. I can wear them at work and charge them at break and still last long into the night.

      Honestly when it comes to ear buds just using normal earbuds with a BTR5 or BTR3K will be the best you can get. If you really need true wireless Z usually just points out a Bluetooth MMCX device instead of anything in particular. True wireless is a messy area as Bluetooth itself is messy between brands.

    The impedance of these is only 0.1 ohm.
    Don't know anything about ribbon drivers, but I usually prefer higher impedance because it's easier for the amp to deliver voltage than current.

      You have a box full of resistors I think it'll be fine

      Thats why you get the conversation box. Did you even listen?

      @@enjoshi-godrez8775 I know. I didn't ask how to connect it to the amp.
      The thing is, it seems like these are the opposite of electrostatic headphones. While they have hundreds of volts and almost no current, these things must have dozens or even hundreds of ampere with little voltage.

      @@hamedshahr they are. They need 13 amps and almost no voltage. Luckily the jotunheim r amp does that better than any other amp that I've ever heard (for raal's anyway) through a conversation box and that is the size of a normal jotunheim and costing only $700 (considering what it is, that is absurdly cheap). Though for the gl1200 you will need an xlr adapter.

      I know that ribbon tweeters are SUPER fragile...and if you so much as blow on them hard they will break...no joke. I bet that is what the paper box around the ribbon is for

    Nice headphones but the box and the need for a speaker connection seems like a lot of work.
