Love my Win Max, it has become my main computer for work and play. The screen size is perfect vs my previous experiences on the GPD Win 1 and 2. Win 2 definitely made me feel old (I am in my early 40s) and I had to use the magnifying glass in MS.
Oh yeah, the intel driver issue is something i was wondering about. Intel coming big with the Xe graphics, but haven't said anyhting about drivers. What's the point of faster iGPUs if the drivers are decades behind?
Nice review. Different point of view than others, more based on daily use. My greatest complain so far is the tab key, since it is vital for efficient linux command line use, for programming, etc.
Great review mate. I agree with you on the bezels being annoying but getting used to it. The function volume keys annoy me more than they should along with the super small select/menu/start buttons. Overall a great device and have no regrets buying one.
You think you will try out the "Aya" mini pc as well? It has Ryzen 4500u, Vega 6. Edit: 8:56, isn't it standard the option to swap the priority/fn combo to either media or function keys in the bios? That software probably adds some latency and could stop working suddenly when playing some REALLY resource-hungry game or using lots of ram later on. Edit, Edit: 9:13 ... oh. Rip.
Great video! A question, What Steam tile program did you use to format the game tiles on 3:08? Your tiles look like they are shrunken to fit the Start menu format. All the ones I have used have me cropping the steam tile to fit a square.
It's a third party app called Tile Iconifier. It works with all shortcuts too, even Windows Store Apps, not just Steam apps. It's really nice. :) Thank you for your feedback too!
@@hmr0 Thanks for the reply, I'll give that a shot! Where do you get the tiles? They look like square versions of the rectangular steam tiles. Does Tile Iconifier in turn shrink them Start menu size?
I look for each one of them online myself, and I do graphic design, so sometimes I just make my own if I can't find any online. If a game has a PS4/Switch version, it's way easier to look for those icons as they will usually be high resolutions. Shrinking icons in start menu is a Windows thing, you can toggle it with the "Show more icons in start menu" options.
Thank you so much for this review, the first really useful on UA-cam. It fells like some fellows are either get payed to not criticise too much or simply biased because they love the device and there is no direct competition. It made me held back and stick to the gpd win 2 for now. All the issues you mentioned make perfect sense. I'm especially concerned with the build quality, heck even that they still don't use a proper landscape screen, I don't get it. The pricing seems simply to high as of now, at least here in Europe. Thanks again for all this useful information packed into one video!
Thanks for you feedback! :) I don't have the technical expertise like other UA-camrs. But I do care a lot about QA and UX, so I thought other might too! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@hmr0 yep, and that's most of the time more important than benchmarking. For performance, I really hope that the next gpd device could make a big step, since Intels new gpus look really promising and should more than double the performance, making any AAA possible to run (hopefully :) )
09:30 you should bug the Phawx guy over the Fn swap, GPD listen to him, that's a great idea, to be honest most people use the Fn keys on their Max primarily for volume or brightness. Alongside this - move the Fan Speed key to the Fn row.
I think there just aren't enough people bringing this up for GPD to consider this worth while. I hope my video will bring a bit more attention to this.
Sorry for the late reply. But I've already got the next few videos scheduled, so I won't have time to look at the Win 2 atm. But I'll definitely check again some time soon.
@@hmr0 oh alright that's cool, I don't mind fixing things every once in awhile, as long as the parts are readily available. I just thought there would be something that can be physically wrong with the button contacts when you say something like killed/killing them lmao
Honestly I've been wanting GTA 5 handheld for years. I even bought an original GPX Win several years ago with the promise (and what I'd see on YT) of being able to run GTA 5. But it was really not possible. This device gives me promise I can finally do it without hiccups. However the price is just too high still. Maybe in 6 months when I can find one on ebay for about $500? Ha.
Nice review from a users perspective. I agree with most of what you say, but regardless of any quirks, I absolutely love the Win Max, its an amazing device.
Hey nice to see you here, I'm a fan of your videos :) Same here, there's just nothing in the market right now that come close to getting the same experience Win Max is offering.
@@hmr0 Yes - if at home Possibly No - if travelling with it. Nudge up the screen slightly, and this is with the very thinnest stick covers. But the improvement is noticeable, the sticks look like they were almost intended to have covers. If soft tabs were affixed to the top of the bezel, to push up the screen a little, it would be possible to carry the Max in a bag with the covers on.
Ah that's pretty neat. Maybe if I'm that daring, I could try sand down the sticks a bit so it can be flushed even with the covers on. :P I might start looking for some covers then!
@@hmr0 If you could re-purpose a balloon and snip it to size; that would likely be even thinner than the Switch skin covers and enable the lid to be closed flush.
When you upgrade the ssd does that do anything apart from upgrade storage ? I'm looking to get one of these because I travel a lot if I can play fallout and skyrim id be happy.
Thank you all for 10k views on my review! ❤️
High quality review, way more detailed on what matters than most. Thank you!

I like your reviews dude. Curious to hear your thoughts on the Deck and Win Max 2

The face buttons are ripped from the Vita. If those were reliable, maybe these will be too.
Love the review, I appreciate it a ton. Gonna pick one of these up

I saw a video about the GPD Win 3 with how it looks earlier. No more clam shell design. I prefer the Win Max much more!
Yep, I am also annoyed by that start button placement - keep accidentally hitting it when I have to hold it one handed

The Win Max analog is so much more easier to replace compared to the Joycon. I've even replaced the my Win Max analog with that of the Vita.

After 2 months from posting this review, did your buttons from Win Max break?
Nope still going strong!

I had one but it's broken now sorry..
you've killed your win 2's face buttons? from just playing it? i would like to know more about this as an owner of a mediocre quality controlled win 2
The QA is just really bad on those in general, if you use them, they'll eventually break on you. The membrane tips and you got to replace them.

Both will happen. But that's always the case with any PC if you think about it.
