Thank you for this. I'm a new maintenance tech who has mostly worked on plumbing but when it comes to shimming door hinges, I never had anyone show me how to do it properly. You made it so simple by showing us to latch the door, lifting it up with composite shims, and then putting shims behind the hinges. Thank you again for this!
This video was helpful. I fixed a non-latching door as well as installed Armor Guard on my garage entry door. It was a little tricky because both the shims and Armor Guard push the door out away from hinge so I had to plan out the order to install the shims and Armor Guard as well as the different screws. I had to add 3 shims to bottom hinge and 1 shim to middle hinge. One thing I did was took some painter's tape and taped the shims together (just a couple of small pieces on each side) then stuck the 3 shims in as a unit (versus one by one)…was much easier plus I could see where the blue tape landed to make sure shims were not too far forward. My first time...took me 2.5 hours but now my door latches and feels more secure. Next spring will paint door, install dead bolt and replace bottom sweep.
Hi Amber, check to make sure if the latch is high or low on the strike plate. Close the door inside the room and look straight into the door gap at the strike plate to get a good view of whats going on. Or put some finger nail polish on the latch and close the door so the latch will leave a tell tail sign of its location on the strike plate. Thanks for watching. And as always feel free to reach out with any questions.
You have 2 choices, file the strike plate opening larger or move the strike plate. To move the strike plate you will need a razor knife to trim away a thin layer of wood to match the area where strike plate is now then reinstall screw hust missing the old screw holes.
@@detroitdiy yeah tried to move it but it won’t come off as the trim is on over top of it. It is an exterior door. My home is listed on the market so I can’t take off the baseboard. I don’t have a file :(

Thanks for sharing the tip on taping the shims together. Patience pays dividends when doing this type of work. Thanks for watching!
Didn't realize door hinge shims were a thing but of course! Thanks for the video
Thanks Man! The exact thing I needed. Pretty much my exact same issue. Old house - settling doors. Needed to shim hinges and lightly adjust the frame.
Thanks, mister
Thank you, excellent video.
Exactly the video I needed
Who's this guy, Shimbo? Datchu? Nice fix!
Awesome ❤ thank you
Could you tell me where I can find these shims?

Thanks@@detroitdiy
Mine is still not latching even after installing the shim.

@@detroitdiy it is a mm or so below fitting in the hole. I tried putting a second shim in the bottom hinge but then the door won’t close at all.

Thats not good, maybe a handyman service in your area could help.
The easy way he said.
I adjust the metal tab in the strick plate. Takes 2 minutes.
