Hi Judith. I know this video is pretty old but I hope you will find my message. There it is : I find it much easier to go ka-ta than ta-ka. I guess I can use both techniques since the ka and ta are more or less equivalent ? Going ka-ta instead of ta-ka allows my hand to move from Doum to ta with less stress due to ka taking place in between. Otherwise my main hand is doing all the job in a row. Any comment on this ? Many thanks in advance if you can give me your advice !! 💜🙏

One of the best instruction videos for frame drum. Clearly explained, concise and easy to follow. Especially loved the parts on how to place the hands, something other teachers sometimes gloss over.

This is wonderful. Judith does a phenomenal job at breaking it down and getting to the heart of Baladi.

As a musician, I love the unique sounds that each culture brings to the table; little nuances that paints a picture of the history of the world.

Nice presentation -- thanks! Across UA-cam, there's no consistency in how basic strokes are performed on frame drums. Rhythms and sounds match, but hand/finger movements are different! -- AAIIEEE ! Piano is easier -- "press a button, and a note comes out."

@@judypiazza well I don’t think I met you, but I did meet Kalani at a clinic. I wasn’t doing frame drums or mid eastern percussion.
      Nice to meet you now.

Saidi is another rhythm in this series. It is related - You're right.

    • @judypiazza

Thanks for listening, Mark! Saiidi (also spelled Sa'idi, Sayeedi, Saidi)) has the two Dums in the middle of the rhythm (when improvising at the end, I may have gone into a Saiidi for one phrase I'm remembering) ... Baladi has two Dums at the beginning of the rhythm. Watch for Sa'idi in my next tutorial soon. I'll also encourage a practice alternating between 3 rhythms within this 4-pulse family ... Baladi (D D - P D - P - ), Maqsuum
      (D P - P D - P - ) and Sa'idi (D P - D D - P - ) ... I'm using Pa as the higher pitched sound, also can be dictated / played as Ka, or an accented Tak. Hope this helps!
