  • As a follow-up to our old video 'why the church needs artists' we decided to flip the conversation and talk about the value of church and community as christian artists and creatives. This is a new panel-discussion podcast style format we're trying out during the lockdown. Let us know what you think and if you'd like to hear other discussions in this style!

It was good to hear that not all artists are peanut brains like me. This conversation went deep and was very thought provoking. Lot son things I've felt myself, but struggled to put into words.

Thank you all for posting this! I thought it was a really great discussion. This reminded how important it is to think of church as a family and a community. As Christians we should strive to be united; that’s how we’re strengthened and stay encouraged. Hope to see more of these videos! I’d be interested to hear a discussion on prayer and why you all believe it is important.

So great to hear other creative/artist believers wrestle with the same issues i struggle with, it definitely helps to not feel isolated. It's good to encourage them in ways to use our gifts in the church, and for God's glory, rather than just doing work for the sake of people's acceptance and likes. Thank you for this!

A suggestion: a conversation about Christian scientists. That would also be enriching :)

I guess Christian scientists would be the best people to discuss that topic. These guys are all artists.

There are so many ads it really cuts up the conversation... I mean, I hope the monetization helps you, because I want to let the ads play so you get the income.
But for longer videos, to have ads every two minutes is a bit challenging.

Artists don't need a Church or religion to produce great and sublime pieces of art.
Artists need patrons that know what they want, are confident with what they want and are erudite and well educated to request an art commission that can result in truly high standards of artistic excellence.
That's was the state of affairs during the Renaissance and for most of classical art history where patrons would approach the artist and draw a contractual agreement.
Otherwise artists will make whatever they feel like and you'll become just another buyer, consuming what is being spoon fed to you by the artist.
Art is a two way street where both artist and patron have to actively contribute into the art they want to produce, the patron by providing a subject matter and conceptual devices to be integrated into an art piece and the artist provides his technical skill in creating the art, arranging an effective composition, mathematical expertise and level of conceptual sophistication to create an art piece that is evocative.
Technical expertise, philosophical and theological maturity, cultural sophistication and more besides are what makes great art.
