fr, the funny thing about the petition is that at no point does it require any proof that you play or have ever played or even heard of the game before.
People could easily farm signatures by telling their relatives to do them a favor among other things... but point is, it's meaningless either way because the overwhelming majority of the signatures are just twitter ""fans"" that never touched anything to do with the game and just follow fanart and stupid ships.
Even if they got 1 million signatures, mihoyo Is not obliged to do anything, do they?

I'm gonna be honest, I cringe whenever someone uses the word "melanin" like "where's the melanin", "my melanated queen", "look at the melanin, yes!", etc. All that crap doesn't only feel cringe as all hell, but kinda reduces characters and sometimes real people to the color of their skin.

Well, most regions in genshin take inspiration (or are based on) from real places though. To be honest, I get wanting more diversity but also they don’t quit the game and Genshin won’t care AT ALL. This “boycott” was meant to fail from the beginning AGAIN.
@@akishi1022 Hoyo says it is based on cultures, but they also do not claim any accuracy, i´d like a little more variance too, not only with skin colour, with the bodyshapes, or ages, too. But it is still a beautiful and good game and the devs get a lot out 6 or 7 matrices for bodyshapes.

As someone with very dark skin, I would love more dark skinned characters but when you turn an existing character from white to black and say "it looks so much better" or "they're supposed to look dark" rubs me the wrong way feels kinda racist, like are you saying dark skinned people are better looking than people with lighter skin? They can't even say everyone is beautiful no matter what skin color you are? Like be fr right now.
This is basically exactly how I feel. I hate it when they race swap characters just to say hey here's your representation. Just no. I would like more darker skin characters but im not going to sit here and demand you do it and boycott your game till you do.
I would rather show a company hey we love your product and we'd love to be represented more in your game, the way you choose to. Most the time when when a character is put in the game because the devs genuinely want to it turns out better. Way better than forcing them in for diversity points.

Good example for "too much" gatekeeping is the european metal scene. I'm about 80% sure that Snezhnaya is going to be based off of Slavic countries(Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Serbia, Czech Republic, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina)

If they want accurately representations, they shouldn’t voice the character. Sucrose is from European region, and her Va is from Latino region, she shouldn’t voice her, it should be people who from that region to accurately represent the character. A Chinese character voice by American Va’s, a Japanese character voice by non-Japanese va.
If you apply the same mindset to them, they will push it back and make rule and exceptions to fit their narrative.
A cosplayer I follow, who has been doing really well wearing Genshin outfits. Said she is going to stop doing any Hoyo cosplays after she goes through the ones she recently bought, to protest over Natlan. I expected she would be back within months because she will miss the attention of being a part of something popular. It didn't even take that long. After 1 week, she's been posting old Nilou reels from 2023 (which isn't a new outfit she recently bought), so the boycott is over already. It was hard not to call her out.
Reminds me of a comment I saw somewhere, someone calling for the boycott started swooning over Scaramouche a few days later…

Representation for representation sake is one of the worst ways to handle representation because all you end up with is stale cutouts and squeaky clean caricatures. They aren’t allowed to be characters because they have to be a symbol that represents a whole group. It’s boring and patronising. The best kind of representation is when it’s secondary to a good character. Look at Jetstream Sam, he could be any ethnicity and people would still love his character, he just happens to be Brazilian.
As an artist I always like to say: Don't write a "___ character", write a "character that HAPPENS to be ___"

Literally yesterday, I saw a community post from a JP content creator about which Hoyo game was their first. One of the top comments was "Genshin" because they saw R18 art of Raiden. JP bros cultured af. She is also one of their favorite characters in the game and has one of the top selling banners globally.

I saw leaks on the subreddit on a lot of Natlan's foods and I was actually able to recognize two that are desserts really common here in South America and I was honestly stoked. What I do is, I follow fanartists, people who are teapot mains, and lore enjoyers and other positive people.
The type of people who complain about Hoyoverse being racist are usually also the people who complain that there is nothing to do, or that the lore is too "complicated". They don't wanna engage with the game beyond a surface level anyways. Speedrunning Abyss floor 12 and calling it a day lol.
There is so so much lore in that game, it has books, every weapon and artefact comes with stories, some even predicting future events, all insoired by different cultures. The amount of stuff I have learned thanks to Genshin, just like Richard Wagners Nibelungenring, Gnosticism, the Ars Goetia, persian mythology, norse mythology, ect, is crazy. I'm so excited about Natlan, and the mythology aspect is just one of the many things that will await me!
I also highly recommend the official Genshin channels "behind the scene" videos! Those are really amazing. The rAcIsT cOmPaNy HoYoVeRsE!!1! hired musicians from all over the world for their osts. They interview them, they talk about the instruments being used, they talk about the difference in music styles and they're all so proud to be able to provide their talents for something great.
Fun fact, Dehya was so well loved in China that Genshin players over there started to donate for children in need since Dehya does that too ingame

I politely disagree. Art is the best medium to express an idea and make an argument for change. It's great for making impact on culture and getting people thinking about things. Fictional or not, it's very Egyptian-inspired. The skin tones in that region range from pale to light brown to mid brown. Which, guess what, is what the characters' skintones are. The fact these tourists act like they should be a way darker shade of chocolate would infer that they think all African skintones are dark brown, which is at Sudan-level, which is waaaaaay south of Egypt.
Remember, a lot of these types genuinely believe that all of Egypt is African black, they in the full We mode.
