  • Alhaj Syed Mohammed Naqvi, commonly referred to by his popular name ‘Syed Saheb’ - a title that is hugely honorific - ’Syed’ in Arabic means ‘Master’ and ‘Saheb’ in Gujarati means ‘Sir’. He is a well known member of our community almost always seen at Stanmore’s Hujjat centre function, whether early Fajr functions or any of the evening functions and in between making sure that the centre runs as well as it should, a reference contact point for all of us.
Syed Mohammed Naqvi was born in a village Dokoha Saadat in Jalandhar, India on 9th February 1947. He was a child born during the tragic upheaval of partition that led to separation and creation of Pakistan. The family moved to Lahore in Pakistan where Syed Mohammed Naqvi grew up, did his schooling and graduated from Punjab University in Political Science and Economics. His thirst for education led him to do law at the same university. After qualifying, he joined a stock brokers firm and work there till 1983. In the same year, he started a partnership with cousin and best friend to supply materials to businesses in Libya from their office in Malta and when this venture did not succeed as expected, he moved to London. He married in 1985 and subsequently joined as a member of staff at Hujjat Centre. Presently, he is
Manager based at Hujjat Islamic Centre in Stanmore.
In this flowing conversation, he shares with us the story of his experiences born at the time of the partition in India, growing up in the upheaval that accompanied it as well as early responsibilities of the family that came upon him as well as his early community life that prepared him for the latter communal contributions. A life, as he explains, gave him contentment and comfort knowing that he did what he could for his fellow believers. Overall, an insightful journey…
