I was one of the lucky 0nes that started watching Ernie as a youngster and listened to Him at 80. My mother bought all the Gospel albums and I still have some of them still. A man of great inspiration. He loved to laugh and I miss this kind of entertainment today. No one seems to want to stop and just listen any more.
Before I read the post, I want to mention that when I was a young kid in central northeastern PA, us youngsters would sing Tennessee Ernie Ford’s song 🎶 about...”I load 16 ton of undermine coal, & the Straw boss said, “well, bless my soul.....”. We loved that song, we were PA coal miner’s kids! Keep singing for the Lord, Ernie, He’s listening! 🙏🏼
My mom and my Grandmother both loved his music and his message. It stands to reason that his music still affects me immensely. Such a pure baritone voice that I do not think will ever be matched regardless of genre.
Ernie,Was one of my favorites as an entertainer when I was young.I miss those days.Ernie had a great voice and was a good actor I loved him on I Love Lucy.
I remember when I was a kid in one of the central northeastern Pennsylvania coal towns, Mr. Ford sang a song that went like this, “He load 16 tons of #9 coal, & the straw boss said well bless my soul!....(etc.).... my grandfathers & father were anthracite (hard coal) coal miners, & everyone in the area loved that song. If I recall, a “straw boss” was a foreman; coal was numbered by sizes; sometimes names were used, I.e, “pea” coal was the size of a pea, or “chestnut “ coal, the size of a chestnut. The sizes were made for specific reasons - depending on different types of stoves of furnaces. I never met my grandpas; they went to Heaven before I was born, but I’ll meet them someday in the Lord’s kingdom, along with mom & dad, ❤️❤️ And the rest of my loved ones. 🙏🏼
The first record I ever bought was 16 Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford. I was about 14 years old. His Spirituals album has been one of my favorites since the 1950's - even when I didn't want anything to do with religion, I always had a copy of that album and I listened to it from time to time. To say that he was a very special person is an understatement.
I really love his voice and music. He was on when I was real little. But I liked him..I believe he hosted Miss America. I am going to listen to his Gospel music right now. ..
A true legend for sure! Tennessee Ernie Ford’s Show “The Ford Show starring Tennessee Ernie Ford” does not deserve to rot in storage! Some network needs to pick up the series! I’m 21 and I loved the PBS reruns back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
23:05 made me kind of sad. Reminded me of how my dad gave me a toy train for my birthday. I was so happy and the train would make the sound and it would make the smoke and it was fun to play with. It would run on the rails which were pretty long. My mother was angry at my father though as he had given the toy but wasn't at home at my birthday. I didn't pay attention to this then or now. He wasn't so near as a parent would and I didn't talk to him much. I love Ernie Ford and he does remind me of my father
I was watching the Randolph Scott film 'Man in the Saddle'. Some cowhands were sat round a campfire and one sang the title song while strumming a guitar. I thought he's a good singer for a bit actor. At the end of the film in the credits I noticed it was TEF doing the singing. The film is on here and worth watching.
I didn;t know that there was enough water in the Pecos River to float a house boat! I grew up watching Tennesee Ernie Ford! The whole family loved him! I remember when he was on an "I Love Lucy " episode and he had them locked up in the country jail but offered to let them out if Ricky would audition Teensy and Weensy , the twins.
His brother didn't show up , My X was from Bristol ,she said his brother was real smart , had a masters degree , and had a job as a janitor ,I can relate.
Just listen to Reagan's description of Ford as he presents the Medal of Freedom. "Celebrities" today do not fit that personal "description" now. We have fallen so far & need to return to that example Ford set for our values.

I was raised in Altoona and East Freedom, Pa. I understand what you're talking about. Altoona was THE Railroad City.
Soft coal was cheaper but didn't burn as long. Hard Coal lasted longer. I could bank a furnace to last through the night when I was way too young.
First class man all the way in every way; someone I admired as a singer--they don't come around often, not with this deep baritone full of character.
