How Into the Breach Succeeds Where Roguelikes Fail

  • Into the Breach has been my most played game of the past few months. Considering it's a turn-based strategy roguelike game I should hate it, but there's a couple of sneaky things it does that elevate it beyond any other roguelike I've played (Enter the Gungeon and Binding of Isaac for instance). Do go check it out if you have not, big thanks to Dunkey for putting me on.

Absolute facts. I hate turn-based games and roguelikes, and yet ITB has sucked me in for more than 250 hours

binging your videos rn your shit is clicking with me in a way i cannot describe. ok ill try anyways. your videos are quick and to the point but still talk about actually interesting stuff in depth that doesnt pretend to be interesting. really awesome keep doing that
also if you want two roguelikes that i think dont breach the 3 sins, Streets of Rogue is a goofy roguelike immersive sim and Heat Signature is a stealth tactical thing where you can pause to think about your next move. really cool and cheap like $4-6 on sale

Thank you redsandwich this is actually such a dope comment to receive, I’m glad you’re liking the content. Heat Signature sounds dope, I’ll have to pick it up before winter sale ends I’m fiending for new strategy games

ITB never really felt like a rogue like, idk why but i just never thought of it like that

I mean roguelike is a very loose genre anyways. Very few key mechanics tie them together, and there’s so many other gameplay differences between something like Isaac and ROR2 that it makes them hard to compare or define alongside each other. I mean I went and did it anyways but still I totally get how ITB could seem not roguelike-ish

ITB always feels fair, unless you play in the literally called unfair difficulty, then you can really appreciate how truly fair it is and how easily they could make it frustrating, still like unfair mode tho

That’s what I like most, I’ve never once felt cheated because ITB always gives you the maximum possible amount of info to work with. I haven’t spent too much time on unfair, I’ll go try it out soon enough.

great review, love the slz music choice, and really sorry that you weren’t able to get into isaac, it’s fantastic but has a stupid high barrier of entry

ITB isn't tagged as a roguelike on the Steam page, but as a turn-based strategy game. This video is is comparing apples and oranges, and speaking bad about most of the apples, and trying to praise the orange as if it's a fair comparison. It's perfectly fine to not like roguelikes, not everyone does, but I don't think it's apt to treat ITB as if it's the diamond in the rough of a game genre you don't like, when it shares very little with said game genre.
Sure, on the surface ITB shares certain gameplay mechanics of most roguelikes. But it then changes how those gameplay mechanics effect both the current game one is playing, and future games. For example:
ITB has permadeath. When you lose, ITB also let's you choose a pilot to keep for the next game, and that pilot keeps all the XP they've gained in the previous game. From my experience playing ITB, this means permadeath is much less of a setback than other roguelikes where you start back at square 1. And sure, you could have a pilot die in combat during a fight, meaning they can't be used for the next game, but that pilot still does not go back to square 1. They just don't keep any XP they earned during that 1 game. You just choose them again before starting another game.
ITB has upgrades like other roguelikes, but I wouldn't say there are any "builds" like most roguelikes have. In fact, I'd say I've never had to make much of a choice when it came to upgrades like I have in roguelikes such as The Binding of Isaac or Risk of Rain. Choosing between more health and/or damage is much more straight-forward than choosing between different items in a roguelike. And 9/10 times I've gotten a different weapon at a shop or in a pod, I haven't seen it as an upgrade, more so just different. That may just be me, but I think it's fair to say the difference in power between the start and end of a game isn't to the same degree as most roguelike games. This also, at least from my perspective, means bad RNG, as far as items go, may not even exist in ITB.
To go back to the shop at the end of each island however, I can't think of another roguelike that guarantees a moment to buy items, heal up, etc. In some roguelikes, shops come up more frequently than others, say in FTL for example, but even in FTL you aren't guaranteed to find one when you need it. Contrast that with ITB where I can always heal after completing an island, and there's way less tension in the game. To be clear, I don't think this is bad, it's just differing game design.
Lastly, roguelikes will have some events that will occur without you planning for it ahead of time. To use some examples, FTL may force you into a nebula and cut the amount of power you have or have intruders board your ship, Risk of Rain may have a hoard of many event or only have 1 type of enemy spawn on a stage, things like that. But with ITB, a pod dropping or environmental effects happening aren't a surprise because the game tells you those will happen before you select a part of the island to defend. Again, this is by design and isn't a bad thing, but it's nearly the complete opposite of what most roguelikes do.
ITB is a great game, and I'm glad you enjoy it, but I don't think saying it succeeds where roguelikes fail is the right way to praise the game.

Etg is mostly skill imo. There are items that make the game a cakewalk, but as long as u ain’t using the pilot’s starting gun you can take down any boss by learning the attack patterns no rng required.
I will say it would be cool if the floor order was randomized or if there was a wider selection of floors say like 10 different possible floors 5 of which are randomly selected for each run. Having different bosses for the secret floors would also be nice.
Ftl on hard mode now that’s some bs. u can die in sector 1 if u playing one of the weaker ships.

    • @NameBeSam
      @NameBeSam  9 місяців тому

That’s a fair take, I just so happen to be extremely mid at etg so my individual experience relied more on rng. I can imagine with more hours and not having a skill issue it becomes a more skill based game, and I do now want to revisit it and see if I can get past the gambling stage and get good.
