Age of Adz is a controversial album. People either absolutely love it or people don’t get it, haha. I for one absolutely love it. On one hand the style of composition is similar to Chigago from the Illinois album but with different instruments. And while it’s sharp and abrasive tone stands out in Age of Adz, Sufjan’s unique smooth and dynamic sound is reprinted in every song. Balancing complicated instrumentation with a simple and intimate sound and clear theme.

Fantastic reaction and great observations regarding the music and lyrics, especially on I Want To Be Well by Ryan.
And just to chime in on the positive feedback you received: I look forward to your reactions the most of all channels as you both have very good ears musically and lyrically. And you are very open-minded and genuine with your reactions. And your banter is really entertaining as well. So, yeah, keep it up. :-)

Just listening to this album for the first time in a while and man it hits hard. Every song has a place and its so much more emotional. I can feel how frustrated he must have been stuck in bed with some virus nobody could identify. I Want to Be Well and Impossible Soul are real highlights for me there.

Also this is some esoteric shit but I feel like great artists speak to us in different ways. For example here in Impossible soul once you were talking during the song and the next part sang "Don't be distracted" and when you were arguing about how to listen to the song, the lyrics went "Better roll along" :p

Halfway through the reaction and loving it! I haven't listened to this in a while and fell in love with the Get Real. It reminds me of this special quality that Sufjan sometimes has with the chord progressions - they're so pleasing tonally like one of you said. He uses a little unconventional structures and makes things theatrical and in the end the resolve into tonic is just pleasing and sometimes like transcendental. He made an interesting project with electronic musician Son Lux and rapper Serengeti called Sisyphus (or S/S/S/). They're song S/S/S - Beyond any Doubt has a fantastic closure as well. Sorry for going on a tangent, just made me think of how nice music can be :)

25:17 This album was largely inspired by the art of a sign painter who, I believe, experienced Schizophrenia and painted fantastic scenes of alien invasions and such. I had a close relationship with someone who wrestled with Schizophrenia and the music really communicates the noise, static and chaos she said she experienced. I would never have played this album for her. It wouldn’t’ve been safe.

Thank you! I really enjoyed this "Age of Adz" journey with the two of you. You both have great insight and interesting comments on this album, and about Sufjan in general. And Ryan, you are great with words😄 I specially liked the Sufjan is Prog - Emotion.
There are a nice recording of "Pleasure Principle", the last part of Impossible Soul, Live on Soundcheck. Check it out if you have the time.

Love this album so much! Illinois is still my favorite though, maybe of all time from any artist. This one leans a bit more into its queer themes, though, which I appreciate (this album is basically one big bisexual anthem lol). Carrie & Lowell is fantastic, too, very sad though. I'm enjoying watching you guys react to this! I'm about a third of the way through.

Impossible soul is an entire side of a record on the 2 disc vinyl. Carrie and Lowell is a great album, and the special *extra* songs he released on cassette called "Greatest Gifts". The song "Wallowa Lake Monster" is pretty haunting and is a great listen

Great album. A sonic trip. Background story to the album is rather odd/disturbing (it's also a lot about mental illness). It fits the 'overproduction' present in the music.
Great wrapping up and insights at the end, guys.

Impossible Soul might be a bit much, but damn, just this one song from Sufjan contains more creativity and originality than most artists can manage in a hole career.
