If you are not moved emotionally by the film or the song I genuinely feel sorry for you. Well done for putting this together.
The movie is A Taste of Honey (1961) with Rita Tushingham playing the female lead.
As perfect a video for this song as could possibly be ...
I've already watched this movie. I liked it very much and the plot makes a lot of sense on why it did influence Moz so much.
This is essentially Morrissey finishing the book "A Taste of Honey" for Shelagh Delaney. Fan fiction before it was a thing. He is singing as Jo's horrible mother who is instructing Jo on how to kill her newborn baby. This is followed by the back and forth of guilty emotions that consume Jo's mind after having done the deed. Finally, there is the decree from her mother that this is for Jo's own good when actually it is only to spare her mother the embarrassment of having a grandchild that was sired by a black man. In the end, Jo (and presumably Morrissey too, as the creator of this dark drama) is so shaken by this horrible act that she can never go back to the slumber of peace she once knew. Or it is simply Morrissey telling Jo himself what he feels she should do and that killing the baby doesn't make him happy OR sad, it is just what must be done. And when he realizes that this is what he truly believes is best for her, he sees that he has been awakened from his own innocence.
Or it could be both. It is Morrissey after all.
Very well put..I saw parts of the film and it's brilliant..I wanted to know more of the tie with these lyrics and the film and I researched and it was so amazing. I checked Genius lyrics .com and it was broken down completely in line with your comment..Thanks for that.
brilliantly done.
