    I was always taught to paint skirtings (baseboards) before hanging paper, but when painting the walls to do the skirtings last.

    Try using 1/4" or 3/8" closed cell backer rod as a filler or slightly larger nominal size backer rod to fit in the gap. Much less messy than TP, inexpensive, more fire retardant, and predictable uniform outcome.

      @@spencercolganIt is a solid (as in not a tube like a straw) tube (think pool noodle) in that comes in a variety of sizes that is small enough in diameter to fill the width of the gap allowing caulk to sit on top of it to fill the space between molding and the wall.

    • @spencercolgan

      I’m going to give you a two-part answer; the first part I will answer now and then I will release the answer and I will go and search for a video that will help you execute the advice I’m about to give you:
      First of all, you want to use tape after the caulking dries. Make sure that it has dried; I advise you to paint the following day. On the following day you are going to use tape and carking again… Yes, I said again! And the reason for that is contained in numerous examples in the following video; and this video is the second part to my answer here now, let me go and search for it and I will edit this comment when I find a video and send it in this answer::

      @@spencercolgan Thank you SO much!!! I have been painting for weeks. I have a pretty steady hand so I do the detail work and my husband does the roller work. I REALLY enjoyed this video! I made a number of little mistakes that your video has shown me how to correct 😀👍 We have two more spaces left to do. I will gratefully use your tips. And I paid close attention to the part in your video about vertical spaces, but I’m still not entirely sure how to handle my vertical crown moulding spaces; sometimes the space is as large as a half inch, sometimes a quarter inch and sometimes flush, all on the SAME wall 😳 You mentioned ‘fooling’ the eye to make an imperfect wall look perfect. I’m THINKING I should paint the caulked spaces the colour of the wall so the straight crown moulding fools the eye into believing that the wall is straight too?

    If the base was getting painted white with a green wall, would you use white caulk or still clear?

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  3 роки тому +3

      It’s a great question; if you are ever painting white or against white, you can absolutely use white caulking. Always always always. However, when you are either painting against a non-white colour please use clear; the moment you use white and it is not against a white , you will discover the reason why
