  • While in Florida this time I started some jackfruit from seed and planted a few trees before I left. In this video, I demonstrate the super simple process and reveal some tidbits about this delicious tropical fruit. In only 2-3 years you can have a jackfruit tree that produces fruit if conditions are right.

Thanks for sharing. I just got 2 jackfruit trees growing. Threw the seeds in the ground for as fertilizer for my roses but they grew anyway. Took me a few months to realize that they are jackfruit trees. Pleasant surprise.

Enjoy the lovely StPete weather while you still can. You're old stomping grounds, Ohio, is getting anywhere from 2-6 inches of snow overnight. 😎 Gotta love the Midwest.
I've always wondered about the jackfruit. I've seen them in stores. I'll have to pick one up and try it.

Where have you seen them in stores? In the north?

@@HardcoreSustainable in Ohio I have seen them in Giant Eagles occasionally (though, you can't count on them being there). And, there's a store in Cincinnati called "Jungle Jim's" that has them every time I go (which is about once a year). Jim's has a HUGE produce section that has fruits & veg from all over the world.

My goal is to set up a tropical greenhouse and jackfruit is on my list of things to try in it. I hear that they can handle pretty aggressive pruning, at least.

If you've ever seen Pete Kanaris' videos I think he might be starting some in a greenhouse/hoophouse. But he's in Florida.

@@HardcoreSustainable Yeah. Watch his stuff all the time. Definitely warmer there than here, but I think I can pull it off. If not, I'll at least get to eat some delicious jackfruit in order to collect some seeds.

If you like Jackfruit, you’ll love Longans. You have to try it. Longans and Rambutans. Mangosteens are also very delicious and rare to find-tastes similar to Lychee but so much fruitier (probably the best).

So many delicious tropical fruits available. And so many you can grow in Florida but won't find in a grocery store.

Great to see you back Dan, Jackfruit is used in a few vegan recipes as its said to take up flavours pretty well. Never actually tried it but I think its available in tins.

Yes, it's been a while. You can make vegan pulled pork sandwiches. I suppose if I had an abundance of jackfruit, I'd do that, but it's so good straight, I end up eating it like that all the time.

Loved this video, I live in West Central Florida and I have lemongrass, Moringa trees, loquat tree, tons of herbs and sweet potatoes, and a banana tree, summer time is really the hardest time to garden here, you just need to know what to grow when, I think I need to add jackfruit to my garden, thanks for sharing,🌱🌱🌱🌱

I'm sad to inform you that Banjo was hit and killed by a car last December while in the care of a friend. I'd gone to Florida to scope out a place to stay that was safe during covid and when I was on the way back I found out she had died. It was a major blow to me and my life is not the same without her. I'm sorry. She was a part of my channel too and I loved her immensely.

I planted some out at the farm I volunteer at, but I don't live in FL over the winter and they got overgrown by weeds during the 7 months I was gone. But I've known others that have started jackfruit and theirs grew fine. You really need to tend to them until they get big enough to grow on their own.
