@@meowmezzo This isn't my post. I, like you, appreciate knowing who the performers are. I can't look up the conductor right now, but I haven't seen a Bard performance that Leon Botstein didn't conduct.
It says a great deal for this opera and for Smyth that Gustav Mahler considered premiering it at the Imperial theatre in Vienna. Unfortunately, it is a very mixed bag. It is more Germanic than English: in fact, the finale has distinct overtones of the closing scene of Wagner's Götterdämmerung Act II. In addition, Smith's setting of the English language is natural and easy to listen to, unlike so many English composers, e.g. Holst's The Mystical Trumpeter or most of Benjamin Britten's vocal music, to name but two composers. Smyth's biggest weaknesses are her lack of melodic and harmonic variety. I was, however, most interested to see and listen to an often talked about, rarely performed opera.

Unfortunately due to the low dynamic level of the video and the very frequent and loud adverts (every 5 minutes) this is basically unlistenable.
