Hello! This bike has a cool story from the previous owner too, he rode it home from Calgary and as he was cresting onto the plateau leaving town he saw a storm approaching. Too far from town to turn around and save himself, he decided to continue on. The storm shortly was over top of him, lightning struck too close for comfort. Apparently it’s purple when up close! Far too close. Luckily he and the bike made it home, where it was loved over many rides in Canada and eventually made its way to NZ with him. It will now spend many rides under me, cherished and shared with you all 💕 thanks!
Nice use of clearcoat. I haven’t seen anyone really document their clearcoat use on these old bike paint jobs and components. I’ve heard that clearcoat can react badly to some decal materials, which might have been the case with this top tube decal + clearcoat. I think in the areas with enough existing clearcoat and proper sanding, the new clearcoat adhered well and looks good. Also, clearcoat will usually speed up the rust formation on the bare metal areas since it traps in moisture more. It’ll be interesting to see how the clearcoat holds up long term. Then again, they are 30 year old bikes at the end of the day.
I'm a fan of road bikes. I like old Miyata's especially. I've been riding an 86 710 for years now, and just converted it to 1x, index shifting, flat bar, etc. It's a whole other ride now. I love it.
I do love the old Miyata’s! I’ve been keeping an eye out for a mtb one too, or Kuwahara with no luck. Sounds like a lovely ride! Have a few ideas of builds and what you described is one of them 👌
@@toastyrides it's a koga miyata touring pro from the early 80s. woulld love finally give it to someone who appreciates the good quality lol It's just a 13h plane away haha btw nice video!
Really love what you've done there! Having rebuilt two frames with the same designs recently, it is interesting to see how differently you built up yours. Build looks really awesome and the handlebars are dope! 💚
Thank you! Oh cool, yeah I really liked your bmx/moto bar style one! I need to get some of those bars or maybe the Fairdale one 🤔 look really cool. Thank you! I love this handlebar, really cruisy and wide 🤩
Good to hear someone from Calgary watches! That’s awesome, haha glad you liked it. Bikes from all over the world end up here, but normally it’s kiwis that end up in Canada 😂 thank you! 🙏
Hi there, I thought it was you I passed when driving the other day in Invercargill, hey it’s toasty rides I said to myself, I follow your channel so I was pleased to see out and about. I love riding my bike around invers, there’s heaps to do down here, I head out around sandy point fairly often, you can do anything down here, I love living here it’s good, take care.
Haha that was me! Funny you spotted me. It’s a great place to ride around, nice and flat! Apart from the head winds, but still worth it. Sandy point is lots of fun too, really well kept trails out there 👍 I bet, it’s a lovely spot to be. I’m glad to have been able to spend some time down here, cheers!
Really nice build and attention to detail. You might want to look at getting an ultrasound cleaning tank, I got one recently and it really cleans out threads and other hard to clean areas of components. It's not a magic wand, but a useful addition to your arsenal.
Dude! You're using an HEIRLOOM silver plate to clean those bearings and parts....take that to the UK's antiques roadshow, it might be worth something 😂😂 Love this build, in fact, love all your work! Cheers Sven Oz
Haha it was $5 at the 2nd hand store and has no makers mark so worthless. The silver coating wiped off as you might see in some of the clips 😂 cheers mate! Glad you’re liking the rigs, greetings from across the ditch 🤙
Thanks! Steel is amazing 😎 love the old Specialized bikes, Rockhoppers are really versatile too. Probably the best mix of playful-useful of the bunch 👍
I'm riding a single speed cro mo track bike with mothbars and love it. Reminds me of when I had a SKID KID bike . Do you have any hints on handlebar care with the clear finish of these bars. Great video mate. Waving the hand from Adelaide in South Australia 👍🤠🇦🇺🚵♂️
I've got a Rockhopper of similar vintage on the stand that I'll be turning into a 1x crosstown ripper as soon as I finish painting it, so if nothing else, I haven't lost my love of these old steel legends.
That’s good to hear you have one still! Sure it’ll be a sweet rig once it’s all done. Painting a bike is a nice way of making it your own too, feel really connected to them 👌 enjoy! Would be cool to see it once you’re all done

I have an old miyata I am selling rn lol
Ooh nice! Which is it? If you were in Nz and it was my size I’d probably take it off your hands 😂

Miyatas have a special feel to them! Every time I ride my 912 I remember why I love them

Very cool shape and finish of handlebars. Love em.😊
As a fan of the channel from Calgary I was not expecting that! Love the vids. Nice build!

Beautiful! Nice & simple.
I, for one, look forward to your road bike builds. Actually I'm here for any of your builds! 😅
That’s good to hear, I have quite a few to get to! I’ll do at least 3 before the years over 👍 haha awesome, cheers to many more build videos 🤩
Damn this man is busting out videos! Thanks for another great one!
Great video as always. You never disappoint.
Cheers Mikey! Glad ya enjoyed it 🤙 some skinny tyre stuff next

I like that frame.
Steel is real

Love these videos so much
Glad you liked it! 😄 always good to hear people are liking them 🤙
Nice and clean SS build! Also, I dig road bikes. That Dawes looks rad.... just call it a gravel bike and trick people into clicking lol
Hi! Great build. I would love to find a project like this my self. Absolutely great with the contrasty white tires. Great look
Would love to see the Dawes build. Despite being Australian I seem to have developed a penchant for old British bikes.
Very nice. Better than new!
Thank you! 🙏 really like this form of it 😎
Such a nice build!
Yes!!! Another vid🤘
Another Specialized too! 🤩👍 thanks for watching 🤙
Dawes!! I just built a 91 galaxy for my daily rider, i love it! keen to see how you'll do it :)
lol the dropouts determine what kinda build it will be I love it
Sehr geil!!!..🫶👌
I always tighten the big nut on the crank puller these days after being lazy and wrecking too many cranks haha

Nice bike
🔥
Bro I had it public for like 20 seconds before I realised I had no title 😂 chur!
Daaammnnn great build, I will copy your build maannn ❤ is that an oversize fork or a standard 22.2 fork ?
Thanks heaps, really happy with it 😎 just a standard 22.2 quill stem yeah! 🤙 awesome, enjoy!
Where does one get those chain stay stickers?
The “ride slow die whenever” is from Stridslans Journal, the “this machine kills Oligarchs” is from Billo Bikes 🤙
Gorgeous build. Now go turn them tires brown 😅
Thank you! Haha I’m trying, they keep cleaning themselves on the road home 😂
😂lol...I thought it said "Paris" under the grips the first time.
WD40, the bicycle mechanics olive oil.
Just as versatile 👌 doesn’t taste as good though 🥲
Hmmm... Who told you to get that Dualco grease gun.🤔
Some absolute legend 👌😂
I had that exact Rockhopper model and color back in high school and for the first couple months of college until it got stolen :(
Oh no! 😫 that’s awful, gone but not forgotten 🥲 hope you find another some day! Love the ride of it, the colour is really cool in the sun too 👌

WAAAAH why turn it into SS. It was already good.
Need more SS bikes to balance the fleet 😂Reverse dropouts! Was destined for it 😄
hI, do u accept the cooperation ?
Gosto de bikes com quadros altos e retos
Yes! The level toptube is so beautiful 😍 thanks for watching 🤙
