- HOLY WEEK IS HERE, AND FOR MANY PEOPLE IN THE PHILIPPINES... IT IS TIME TO MAKE BINIGNIT!
I actually don't know why or how this tradition started for a lot of people? But I do love it! "Binignit" is actually a term used where we live in the Philippines... but there are other terms and variations for this glutinous rice and root crop based dish. Anyways, we cooked it at the beach home here in Cateel... and turns out so did Mama Rose! Kumander Daot was back for a visit with his family (I am sure you can see it on his vlogs in the future). In this video, we also check out a local barangay waterfall that we had never visited. It is really a wonderful place to swim!!
So wonderful spending time back here at the beach home with friends and with Therine for Holy Week.
Have an awesome week ahead everyone!
Power On!

I'm 66 yo US/Visayan Babae. I believe binignit is a Catholic thing tied in w/fasting for Holy week(?). The weekend b4 Easter my father prepared the coconut & my mom cooked the binignit & that's all we ate until Easter. Definitely not complaining! So this practice is as old as time!
Happy Easter kulas and Therine and the gang in Cateel. Great vibes and thanks for great vlog again in beautiful Cateel! ❤️

When we were young during as far as I remember our mother cooks ginataang mais and coupled with gulaman. Those were our snacks during holyweek. We were not allowed to eat meat so our meals is mainly ginisang monggo and gulay. But that was in Central Luzon.
Yummy! Ginataan halo halo! Happy Easter everyone!😇
Yes it’s a Holy Week tradition, my late mom would make that in Romblon, and also my grand mother inLeyte . After Easter, it’s our merienda.

Bingit is delicious when warm and with sticky rice
It is popular to cook benignit in the Visayan region for observant catholic who fast and to avoid meat on Good Friday.

Sarap laway ako
Nice place peaceful fresh air
Wow that's so yummy !!!
Binignit during holy week is the best food snack
agreed!
Classic and delicious binignit has only all natural ingredients- ube or gabi, saba banana, gata or coconut milk, tapioca pearls or sago, nangka or jackfruit.
Did you add.ripe langka? Sarap
we're kapampangan's from Pampanga called that SAMPELOT pronounce as SAM-PE-LOT ☺
While binignit can be eaten any time of the year, it seems to be more delicious during the Holy Week haha because it seems like our minds and palates are conditioned to become hyper-activated when it comes to eating binignit during those days. I've already eaten binignit twice this week, but I feel like eating it again so I might try my hand at cooking it.
And that Ghost Crab you took footage of on the beach is hilarious; props to that guy doing its best Threat Posture, especially when that dog passed by.
True dat! Binignit tastes somewhat even more delicious during this time
Btw, to answer your question as to how the tradition of eating binignit during Holy Week started, it apparently started because of how some christians choose to fast and avoid eating meat during the season, so they eat binignit as a stew as an alternative to stews with meat instead and it had eventually become common practice of cooking ans eating binignit during Holy Week, whether people choose to abstain from eating meat or not.
Hope to see you guys soon! Very glad to see you back in Cateel Kulas. I'm sure you miss the "vibes". 😅 Regards from the Argates/Team Gensan! ❤❤❤❤
with that amount of binignit just put half amount of water then 4-5pc of coconut milk to make it full. add also condense milk to make it creamier. Kulang man as gata Kulas.
It is tabudlo in Surigao.
nice conversation,nice food.
Happy Easter to all.
Very delicious bilo, bilo, complete pack of nutrient, protein, carbs and minerals. It energize your body and mind whole day.
The best sampelot made of Kapampangan!
"Kuan" is the same as "da kine" (the kind) in Hawaiian slang. Example "Da kine said put da kine in da oven till pau cook." 😂😂😂
6:45 just like the japanese when they are talking and will pause for a second they say "ano.."
🎉 happy easter ninyong tanan
I think bilo-bilo is not made out of rice but some kind of fruit "kolo" looks like a jackfruit outside but tasteless when you eat it, correct me if I'm wrong.
It’s an all star cast in the house
Si kulas kalma ra kaayo..ilisdi ug kumander kiat imong ngalan kay kiat lang ang agi
Government should protect these areas for everyone. Develop access and bring opportunities to locals
I hear you Mama Rose. It’s customary for us Filipinos to use “kwan” or “ano” when we can’t think of the right word, place, term or name right away. Ex:
1) Nakita ko si “”Ano” (in place of a missing name) sa palengke.
2) Nandyan sa “kwan” (in place of a term/place) yung unan mo.
🤭🤪😊
We don't eat meat during holyweek, that's why dishes like binignet is popular especially in provinces during lent season
Happy Easter kulas
i can tell a story with just kwan kwan kwan to my friends and they will understand hahaha
😂😂😂💪💪💪
Gp vosit mama Rose again
Yes Kulas, Filipinos are like BDO, we find ways lol!

Ginittaan😊
That is called tabirak also in Mindanao .
Kulas, here in Iloilo City, Benignit is called Linugaw. Ever since I was a very small kid, we cooked linugaw every all souls day and every Good Friday. I don't know why. I am now 65 years old.

Omg haha my dad used to live in Davao, and when we were kids living in Manila, he always used to say "kwan" when everyone around us says 'ano'... so is 'kwan' a southern thing?
Kwan is fill in the blanks
