I did hear the machine clunk as you were finishing the stitch. It sounds a bit like the singer of the same mechanical type.
Which one is smother and less noisy? A singer heavy duty or this brother?

do you use a different needle for thicker material? and what tension would you use for regular sewing?

I use my NV 980K for thick material because I sew bag.
And use needle number 18.
