Thank you, Mr. Janowski! This is the true soul of Schumann. This is the best Rheinische experience in more than 50 years as listener and in about 40 years as a professional classic orchestra musician.

Magnificent! Well played and relationship with orchestra and conductor superb. Janowski does not need the score, he knows and feel Schumann's passion. Brahms must have listened to this and studied it! Schumann passes his musical legacy!

@@gorge5412 Sooo true!! You haven’t lived until you’ve heard-and FELT!--the NY PHIL playing a simple forte passage (Mehta was conducting, and I think it was Liszt’s “Mazeppa”). IMHO, Schumann's four symphonies are highly underrated. This piece is amazing and extremely well played although it's a bit faster than I've heard before.
I agree that it's a bit faster here. I actually like it that way which is unusual for me. I normally prefer a somewhat slower tempo but the up tempo in the last movement gives it a graceful energy that it needs.

@@mrdietergericke Exactly. Schumann's depth is not shown in his symphonies, but in his piano and chamber music. A good example is his Dichterliebe. Schumann and Brahms were friends, but that doesn't mean they were equally great or had a similar musical style.

I've always liked the dramatic flow of this symphony - it just seems to lift me up and carry me along in its pleasant journey, and Janowski keeps it moving. It's beautifully performed, although a little more urgency and weight in the 'feierlich' would have been welcomed. In fact the whole symphony could have benefited from that treatment.
That very strange syncopation at 1:14 gets me every time I hear it. I guess syncopation is the wrong word. It's at bar 63, where flutes, horns & 1st violins carry the melody and oboes, clarinets & bassons lag half a bar behind.
the opening theme of this symphony is one of the most uplifting melodies in the entire repertoire...after that the music can't maintain the same level of inspiration...

That 3rd mvt. is so revealing to Schumann's mental state, I believe....what a great piece of music! One of my favorite moments in music!
