Here in the area of Montréal we got lucky, the intense smog covered us for about a day and now the air is (mostly) back to normal. Thanks alot for the info, I legitimately understood nothing about it other than "big smoke smell bad"
I’ve been seeing some really terrible effects in Canada; I’m glad the air has cleared out for you there. Hopefully the rest of the summer brings some rain and less lightning.
This was highly informative! Ever since the AQI reached 250 in Grand Rapids, MI (where I work) on Tuesday, I've been looking into all of these indices with great interest.
Thanks for covering this! I've also been watching this, as it's also gotten to northwestern PA in the past few days, obscuring the skyline and the view of town across the river, which usually only happens on foggy days! Friends of mine have said they and their children have had asthma issues, though somehow I haven't been affected by that yet.
Great video! I always see your videos in Italy, and little did I know you’re my southeastern PA neighbor and I’d get a great video on the biggest news we’ve had in a while.

This is unrelated to this video but you're the reason why I bought the "linga latina" book and am now learning latin, just felt like I had to say that lol
The Canadian AQHI doesn't actually have an upper limit. A couple summers ago, when a "heat dome" was trapping wildfire smoke, the AQHI here in Vancouver BC was in the 40s.
I highly recommend Cambridge Pro masks. They are highly effective against fine particulates like smoke. When properly fitted, you cannot even smell smoke. The useful lifetime of the mask is dependent upon the air quality.
Interesting video! Living in Alberta, spring/summer means wildfire season now. BC, AB, and SK are all on fire right now, and in May/early June the smoke was so bad the sky was red in some parts. Went outside with a mask. I'm sure we will see more of this in the coming weeks as the season just officially started...
I also divide my time between Pennsylvania and Italy, can't believe there is someone else! Inside all week in PA due to the fires, lockdown seems to follow me wherever I go!
I’m from the Lehigh Valley (Eastern PA) - I’ve been watching your channel forever now and I had no clue you were from my neck of the woods! Always assumed you were in Philly I guess… Crisis brings folks together 😂
@@polyMATHY_Luke get out of here I go to Lehigh for my masters! Was a classics major at SJU but had to transfer and the new school didn’t have the program. Yesterday i had off from work and i usually go for a walk whilst calling my grandmother, but the air was in the 150s it said. I ultimately decided to just go for the walk because according to that index it said was still safe enough to be outside but yeah idk it was still a little hazy
People need to be using their N95 masks. We all just got educated about them for several years. Last year when we got our now-annual wildfire smoke in the PNW (AQI > 150) almost nobody was wearing their N95s when they went out. And build a box fan cube out of 4 filters, a box fan and a cardboard bottom from one of the boxes they came in.

Tuesday we were told not to go outside, the air quality was unhealthy 214. I will tell you, we live near Lake Huron and we have been here and in Michigan 58 years (with forest fires) and we have never smelled the chemical smell in the air that we are experiencing now. Pain and numb throat and tongue. It seems Canada will let the fire to continue burning all summer? Will they let us go put their fires out? I think like 98% of canadians live at the most southern regions of Canada. How is the Canadian population handling this?
That’s a good question; to my knowledge the Canadians are doing their best to put the fires out, but they’re far away from most major roads so they’re hard to get to. This, plus the rather dry season and winds, are making for an unpleasant combination
Only the USA and Canadian AQI matter for the Canadian fires, or the California fires. Europe can worry about its own problems, like Icelandic volcanoes,.
Luke - if there’s no way to compare these disparate scales, how is the app doing this by changing the precip layer to AQ? Does the app have some magic formula for translating into the American system? Thx.
Great question! I forgot to mention this: as far as I can tell, the raw data of the concentrations are provided globally, and the app (or the source of the combined data) interprets the concentrations according to whatever national scheme. Thus the pollutants measured in the US but not in Canada are simply left out of the Canadian AQHI calculation. Similarly, the two pollutants not measured in Canada are not fed into the US AQI, but the others are, still giving a clear picture.
These extraordinary fires - more area in Canada has already burned than in the past 4 years combined - could indeed be due to anthropogenic global warming. I’m slow to say any particular weather event is definitely caused by climate change, as there exist many potential explanations. But the demonstrated warming of the Earth could be a contributing factor. Hopefully sufficient data and analysis will clarify this.
