I was going to buy a few containers and build my house, but after looking into the costs, it just wasn't economical and would have actually cost MORE just to finish it out than a traditional stick build home of similar dimensions. I then went onto barndominiums, but they wouldn't give me the efficiency I was looking for and finally I discovered ICF last year, which I think is the future of building. ICF is very DIY friendly (my wife and I are self building our ICF home) and it will be the most efficient home I can think of for the costs we will end up paying per sqft to build it.

Oh hell no !! One of the best professors i had explained it this way. We are hear to educate the students and give them all the facts good, bad or otherwise and try not to colorize the information we are giving them. We dont need a bunch of clones who think just like we do or no innovation, no different way of looking at it is likely to happen. The best outcome is when someone discovers something by seeing it without our prejudices and opinions. Most of what she said was a opinion piece nothing more and provided little in the way of actually facts.

I'm currently converting a container, and your video didn't insult me at all!
I've been a carpenter for over 40 years- from a union carpenter in Fort Worth to a cabinet maker for a Fort Worth art museum to a construction super for the Parks and Wildlife. The container is the hardest thing I've ever tackled. Very little of it is as easy as building with sticks. To do it to "code" is nearly impossible, and it took me weeks to come up with a way to properly insulate it without using expensive spray foam. (I'm trying to produce an affordable home in a controlled environment that can be delivered and lived in on the same day.)
    Anyway, great channel, Belinda.

Great Video. The world has become so much smaller with the change in technology. When I grew up, 60 years ago, relatives in other continents were so far away. Now we go to the computer and instantly look and talk to friends or associates. I too had wanted to be an architect. I remember talking to one when I was 10 years old. At that time I could read a drawing and knew a lot about buildings. When I met a drafting teacher in grade 10 he convinced me to become a machine designer. I still like to keep up with the changes in house design especially because we have a wooden 100 year old house. Needless maintenance is a must and that is why I love your channel. Good luck in your future.

I just recently started watching your videos. The first one was the laminate vs vinyl flooring. I was impressed with your knowledge so I started watching more as they came up on my feed and then I saw this one and I had to watch.
I took drafting in high school and got hooked on architecture in the 10th grade. After I graduated (1977), my grandfather got me an interview at a civil engineering firm (it was his friend) but that's as far as it ever got for me. I have been a programmer since 1981, so I definitely took a different path. I still love architecture and I love using what I learned, way back then, when it comes to looking at houses and DIY projects and such. I cringe whenever I watch those DIY shows where the clueless homeowner doesn't even understand about load bearing walls.
Anyway, I love what I've seen so far and I will continue to watch. I love your matter-of-fact style and how you present things in understandable terms. Keep up the good work.

You made such good points in your video! I'm still building a container house but it's because I can do alot of the work myself. It's not ecologically focused for me, though the whole area is gonna be as off grid as I can get it. The 53ft domestics and Ibeams I need for reinforcement are not cheap. But everything else is easy enough for me to do, including moving the containers and materials to the house site. I dont think I could ever have a contractor build a house for me because I have seen first hand what you get from contractors, subs, and builders. Over all I think the containers are right for me but are certainly not the holy grail of building.

I love your idea about the no-contractor home.
This is the type of home that I keep designing 'in my dreams' as well. Just like in your idea, the plumbing would be outside the walls. It would run elevated in the middle of a drain channel (that runs around the foundation and collects the gutter water as well) and only enter the house at the locations where if it needed.
The kitchen sink would have an extra cleanout access on the outside wall, so the plumber don't ever has to enter the kitchen with their equipment that has been 'elsewhere' before. The shower would be placed so, that on the outside wall an access door can be opened, to access the pipes. Also extra outside cleanouts for the plumbers.
I would also have a utility room, with good access (driveway or front of house) that would house all the utilities from hot-water, hvac to internet. It would have a drain system, for case of leakage. As far as electrical, each room would have it's own circuit (and breaker). The fridge would have it's own circuit breaker as well! AND under (almost) every light switch, there would be a receptacle. Cat6 cable running everywhere for optional installing security cameras.
Oh and the most important part, but that I'm still brainstorming if it is even possible to do. A Roman style hot air floor heating system. That way no danger of leaking floor heater. I'm thinking about preparing and insulating the crawls space and heat it. Air conditioning would be similar style. The cold air would circulate inside the walls. So there would be no blowing air movement inside the house and the house would be perfectly temperature controlled. It is just a dream of course. But if I ever win the lottery, this is what I will build.
Until then, these are my ideas for anyone who might like them. 😎

I'm still sold on a shipping container home but the moisture happening because of the wood touching the metal had never been brought up. I'm now looking into how to minimize that so thank you 😁.
The thing that's great for me is being able to build it on family land and paying for it piece by piece. Concrete first, container, siding (thanks to you), framework, and lastly finishing touches. Then moving on to buying land and fixing that up and shipping the house over to that land. I can do $20,000 loans and paying them off asap much more than $250,000+ mortgage where if I lose my job I lose my house.

Belinda, YES! My ideal home is one where the entire central operations for the home are located in the middle of the structure in a wall accessed by a door. I can build up space around it. But maintaining operations would be easy because it is centralized. That dream is what brought me to shipping containers and their potential utility. You changed my mind about the containers.

thanks, Glad I found your channel. We in New Zealand apparently have the least affordable housing in the world so both reality checks and fresh ideas for building are so needed.

I thought your shipping container video was AWESOME. Having done a fair amount of home reno myself, I was turning over the idea of what it would take to turn shipping containers into a home in my head. It never made sense to me how they were supposed to be "cheap" considering they what I thought it would take to "finish" them. Thank you for confirming what I thought was the case.

If I recall correctly, your shipping container video showed up in my recommendations one day and that's how I found your channel. I am _sooooo_ appreciative that you made that video, because I'm now a subscriber.
A funny thing about your name and that spot in the video is that for the first few videos of yours, when my son would ask me, "who are you watching?" I would respond with "Belinda Carlisle," and then say, "no, wait," and have to look back at your name to correct myself. :)
I would like to see more Q&A's. I think once a month would be good, because that gives more time for you to drop some knowledge on us.

You were absolutely correct about shipping containers. These were all the same conclusions that I came to when investigating the practicality of building with shipping containers. You can buy a lot of framing with the $2000 plus that a shipping container will cost.

You nailed it with that shipping container video. I have been temped at times to use a shipping container for a small cabin. However, the first thing I worried about was just WHAT the contained had been used to ship? Pesticides maybe? I also noticed that they are flimsy metal boxes with strong corners. And they are made out of METAL (hard to work for a beginner). It is very easy to get distracted by a bright idea like using containers for housing. You did a great job of bringing some common sense to this discussion.

Architecture is not he only field where academia is disconnected from the working world. I found this to be true in both my computer science degree and EE degree. My structural engineering masters was most closely aligned with reality, but that was because I did that online and most of the instructors were working engineers who were teaching the online classes as a side gig. That was actually very beneficial.

Hey i learned the Waterfall model as the only way to do software projects (in the 1990s). Specify everything even in a mathematical language Z so only experts can read it. Yeah they couldn't be fucking more wrong than that. After this lesson i see the human world with very different eyes. It's so much wrong here and conservative behaviour is so extreme to hold on to continue doing the wrong things

I agree but I don’t think it’s conservative behavior… I think it’s a global control of money. When you look at these studies like even the insulation and saying you do not need to wear mask....Well think about it... they’re doing the studies and who are they hiring to do them and how are they manipulating them to change their ruling etc. I don’t think they care about people… And if the people get cancer then of course that helps the medical industry. Everything revolves around money. Like they would hate it if we were all living off the grid but that’s even liberals… Trust me, the people with all the money want things to keep revolving around money and what puts money in their pocket so that is both liberals and conservatives. I am conservative but I am very conscious of what we are doing to our oceans with all of the plastic and how if we use solar we would not rely on electric companies etc. who are just making all this money. I also agree with Belinda about homeownership. In our country… The US… Homeownership and having a big home is such a social status. But we have so many people in debt and paying to the man. I just don’t like conservatives always being dumped on because I am conservative but I also have liberal ideas and agree with many things. But seeing the ins and outs and the truth behind politics, people are blinded by liberal leaders. They are also just wanting to suck people dry because money money money rules all.

A bit of a defense of academia...
It isn't really *supposed* to be that connected with the working world. That's sort of the original point of it.
Sure, when you get a bachelors degree in a field you should be familiar enough with it to be able to learn on-the-job what you need without much fuss.
Higher degrees were originally envisioned for the few people who were not going to pursue practical work and instead devote themselves to trying and advance the field itself. Academics could earn a decent living, but not really strike it rich (maybe a few would get famous)... Society basically kept them comfortably housed and fed so that they could work on ideas and high-risk high-reward stuff which they gave back to society for free.
The 'guild' fields like architecture and medicine are a bit different and I'm not super familiar with them. However, in the sciences, I will claim that no one should be getting a PhD to land a 'job'. A PhD is horrible training for working anyplace outside of a university or research lab (and a very very few other 'jobs').
Lots of companies have used higher degrees as a lazy way to filter for "the right sort of people", and lots of schools shifted towards making those higher degrees a bit more vocational... but they weren't setup for that originally and academia is really not the right environment for it.
Of course, I'm an academic (biologist). Nothing at all wrong with more vocational / 'working world' focused education, it is just different and both are made worse by trying to shoe-horn it into academia.
      Anyways... That's my rant.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 3 роки тому

@@travcollier I disagree. What then is the point of academic studies?

    • @travcollier
      @travcollier 3 роки тому +1

@@LTVoyager As I mentioned, the guild based professions like medicine, law, and architecture are a bit different... Medicine is the clearest example because med school is so clearly different from grad school (people often get both an MD and a PhD if they want to do medical research.).
I'm not an architect, but I was under the impression architecture school is more along those lines... Arguably less well justified.
Several branches of engineering also have a professional guild structure, but gatekeep with a test more than a higher degree/school.
Law school is also pretty vocational / test prep compared to a PhD program.
Anyways, yeah architecture school may be out of touch with the reality of architecture. That is a problem if the purpose of architecture school is to train architects. But architecture school isn't really "academia" then... It is a vocational school.

You provided a concise analysis of the proposition to use shipping containers for human habitation. Salesmen seldom sell an item on its merits, alone. More often, they resort to selling you your own preconceived, rose-hued image of how much better your life would be, if only you owned that thing you are so enamored with. My dad was a mechanical engineer in R&D for a large multi-national American equipment manufacturer. His pet peeve was when sales people would take liberties with the truth; many of them without so much as a basic understanding of their own product's capabilities and limitations. Misleading the customer is always bad business, so kudos to you for stripping away much of the irrational hype surrounding the shipping-containers-as-home phenomenon.
