The brilliant thing about this track is how well it uses spacing, build-up and tension to make every repetition feel fresh even though, as you pointed out, it's the same segments being linked together with occasional slight variations. But because the build-up always lasts *just* long enough each time, it always hits like a sledgehammer every time the "chorus" comes roaring back in to get you. It's also dark sorcery that this track feels about 1/4 of its actual length just because of its pacing. So good. And sorry for having been AWOL on your vids for weeks; life's been nutso busy lately. Hope you're doing well!

Here are some fun facts for you.
The artist behind the game stated they took inspiration from heavy metal covers
The music was made with an old synth machine which is where you get those weird alien techno sounds
What sounds like a guitar is actually, in fact, a chainsaw being revved
Every single thing you see, feel and hear n this game is just oozing with testosterone and metal energy,
It makes you want to bulk up and dead lift a tree

    • @brandendunagan8822
      @brandendunagan8822 Рік тому +61

Yeah the original reasoning for this is because Bethesda did not want metal in their game as to not be associated with scream core stuff because its not everyone's cup of tea. So Mick Gordon made a synth that somehow churned out these sounds. The chainsaw is not just a chainsaw but the one from the original doom games. After a lot of tweaking of the style he actually said that being limited at first to not use guitar really helped develop the sound to a point where its truly special. After showing this new sound with the added guitars to the people in charge they agreed that it helped a lot and allowed him to use guitars. Its funny how the restrictions at first helped make a banger of a soundtrack latter.

@@t.k.5088 hoo boy, it's a little more complex than just what the guy described, the game adapts the soundtrack based on if you or the demons are on the advantage
did you get ambushed by the demons? well there is no build up, time to kill
are you absolutely crushing every single demon like you're stepping on ants? the game will throw more of the intensive badass sections of the track
you got hit and took a lot of damage, forcing you to retreat? the game will sneak in a part of the track that evokes an "oh shit" feeling
the demons are hunting you like crazy now, and you now need to think calmly how to get out of this situation, well the game is nice and will hold the music back a little bit so you can catch your breath
that's just what i could tell, from the first game even, DOOM Eternal is even more complex, it's different from any other game OST, it's not there just to enhance the moment, it's like a maestro conducting you on how you should play, and if you get into the "zone" that the music provides, you're literally unstoppable, if you got the time, i seriously reccomend you to play it, both of them are divided in levels and each of them takes about an hour to get all of the collectibles, kill every demon, etc, so if you don't care about that it should be even less

The Doom reboots, especially when you actually play them instead of listening to the assembled tracks, have some of the most EMPOWERING and REACTIVE music in all of gaming. Props not only to Mike Gordon, but to the sound engineers that programmed the music to flexibly react and adapt to the pace and method of your fighting. The game rewards you for unrelenting violence by ramping up the music; and if you're more methodical and slower it STILL rewards you by making the music more subdued and sinister. Doom is a game where the player is the boss and the enemies are stuck in with you, this music is YOUR boss music and it's fantastic.

The best thing about DOOM's music is that most of the tracks aren't meant for the enemies. They're meant for the Doomguy, ripping and tearing through demons as he forges on to save mankind. You play any other games with demons and you're usually the weaker one, finding cover and killing enemies carefully. Not in this game. It's all up close and personal. And the soundtracks convey that feeling really well.

You're completely right, this would be boring if it didn't play so much with the song structure. It technically is just the same melody on repeat, but it doesn't feel that way. I think some of Frank Klepacki's work (like Hell March from Red Alert) is in a similar category.

    LET'S GO
I don't remember WHEN i first heard bfg division, but i know that what i felt was very similar to what you described as subversion of expectation, we keep expecting something and 99 percent of the time it's NOT what happens. I just think it's cool bc beat drops are a very essential part of metal music in general and BFG division still does the job brilliantly even if the beat drop was the polar opposite of what you'd expect.

It’s kinda hard for me to put into words because I’m not incredibly musically literate. But something I love about BFG Division is how fun it is. Yeah it’s super loud and heavy and fast and intense and I love that stuff. But there’s like… a bounce to it, a groove, a sway. I dunno, something you can move too. There’s some really fuckin fun energy in it that’s super catchy. Wish I could phrase it better but I definitely feel it

If you do another Doom video, at the end you should take a look at a gameplay sequence with the music (although if there's a limit on showing blood and guts on this type of video it will definitely break that lol). It's super cool to listen to the track shift as the fight progresses with the tide of battle shifting back and forth as more demons keep coming and Doom Guy keeps dismembering them. I've played other games with this setup of swapping between "ambient," "rising action," and "balls to the wall" versions of the track based on the situation, but the way it combines with the gameplay in Doom is perfect.

Hearing you talking about doom makes me wonder if you’ll check out Ultrakill. Similarish gameplay, minimal metal in the music.
Personal favorites from Act 1 include Castle Vein, Versus, Requiem, and Divine Intervention.
Each of these also has their counterparts heard outside of Act 1: Castle Vein with Altars of Apostasy, Versus and Duel, Requiem with Order (not in either of the albums on yt, special video on Hakita’s channel), and Divine Intervention with The Death of God’s Will (the most anticipated track by far for Act 2 and Hakita pumped it out in 5 hours on the day that Act 2 was meant to release)
Tbh the majority of Act 2’s tracks are total bangers and I highly recommend listening to both albums!

As someone who clearly knows music, it was great to see that whenever you recognised a pattern and got into the rhythm, it switched it up on you; to which you seemed pleasantly surprised. I think it captures the chaotic essence of the fast-paced shooter really well too, it's not just music that you tune out during gameplay, it's an integral part of the combat experience. Even just analysing it outside of the game, it's technically outstanding.

  • @jcbq01

What's funny is its its actually spaced out to in game weapon staccato and player movements the super low parts are moments when you are in the middle of a kill cam. That then swaps over to the doom guy just pulling out a weapon and returning to the staccato. The eeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeee your talking about is the few moments the doom guy stops to walk. Slowly. Towards the next wall of crap. The demon summoning part is like *let's have fun*.
These tracks are nothing more than a operatic ballet of murder, blood, destruction, and the sheer glorious carnage of the events you see. Because if you listen reaaaaaally closely one of the electronic voices, the melody you picked up, can almost be one lone quiet angel of *death* singing its choir.

BFG Division in particular is almost entirely frets 2-3 (when tuned with the lowest string at E1 which I'm pretty certain is what Mick Gordon did here) but it's just hypnotic.

Something I personally enjoy about BFG division is a lot of the bits feel like some combination of a journey and a conversation. Like demons watching Doomguy as he searches different parts of the facility, chittering fear and rage to each other from hidden places only for the Doomguy to eventually find them and tear them limb from limb. The repetition of the main 'chorus' feels like the songs way of saying that Doomguy is inevitable, and the added shrieking and crunch of the finale chorus is showing that no matter how hard the demons fight back, the Slayer will fight harder.

The start of this song overall always felt like, at first how you describe it Marco but then it goes into this loop before the actual rock starts where it sounds like an alarm is going off, effectivly marking the beginning of an epic fight if that makes sense. Listen from 1:16 and you can hear the overall loop going down till it descends into absolute carnage.

The screaming, wailing.....melody? that hits after the drop finally arrives, always puts me in mind of that kind of stereotypical, eerie theremin music you imagine when you think of old campy sci-fi movies. Like, remove the pounding bass and other modern trappings, and you can almost picture a miniature suburban neighborhood being menaced by two pie tins hanging from a thread, all in black and white.

Something I would recommend is to check out the Berserk 97 sound track and just Susumu Hirasawa's songs in general. Sure the Guts theme is a must and its been memed to death but Susumu is genuinely one of the most unique and esoteric musicians out there with a style of music you wouldn't mistake for anyone else. For his anime and movie works there's. Berserk has Guts' theme, Earth, Murder, Forces, Behelit, Ash Crow, Hai Yo, Sign-1 and Sign-2, Aria and Indra. Millennium Actress has Chiyoko's Theme Mode 1 and 2, Run, Actress in Time Layers, Prince of Key and Nigredo (Key and Nigredo are variations of the same song but Nigredo has vocals and differences in melody). Paprika has Parade then the next ones are variations of the same songs but holds greater difference compared to Prince and Nigredo theres A Drop Filled With Memories, Mediational Field, Chaser and the apex which holds full vocals Girl in Byakkoya Field - White Tiger Field. Then there's standout songs that I'm not sure are associated with any media such as Niwashi King(Gardener King), Caravan, Stillborn City, Initial Value of Midair, The Secret of the Flowers of Phenomenon, Narcissus Jigen Kara Kita Hito, Jikan no Seihou(The Westward of Time), Venus, Love Song.
Someone that would be up your speed is Shiro Sagisu who definitely does a lot of dramatic operatic and classical music. He is famous for covering the Berserk movies, Shin Godzilla, Bleach(Lot of Spanish Influence) and Neon Genesis Evangelion. The latter holding a lot of biblical and gregorian style music as is reflective of the anime. For Berserk there's Hundred Years War, Blood and Guts (Guts other theme which explains his story), My Brother and New Horizons. For Evangelion theres Carnage, You Can (Not) Advance, The Final Decision We All Must Make, The Ultimate Soldier, From Beethoven 9 + The Wrath of God in All Its Fury, God's Gift and In My Spirit. For Bleach there's Clavar La Espada, Treachery, Escalon, Fade to Black B03 and Quincy's Craft. For Shin Godzilla there's Who WIll Know(Tragedy), Persecution of the Masses, Black Angels and Defeat is No Option.
I'm sure others can think of more tracks, I understand that this is definitely a lot to cover. I don't actually expect you to cover a quarter of these let alone all of them. These are just my friendly suggestions. I find your reviews and inquiries to be rather entertaining and insightful. I'd be delighted to broaden your scope even by a little bit.
