  • I found this 2002-2006 Toro Recycler Model 20017 push mower on the curb on trash day last year. It has major transmission issues on the self-propel. In this video, we'll diagnose the precise problem and attempt to repair it. According to the service manual, this model came with either a worm gear transmission or a single speed bevel gear transmission, which is the one we have here. So this will service as a complete how to teardown and rebuild this style transmission. Here is the service manual if you need it: www.toro.com/getpub/22446

I need to find somebody in my area that fixes stuff like you do. I have many things I was 'going to fix', but health reasons have kept me from doing so. I have a nice fridge, a Toro recycler lawn mower, two gas grills, a dryer, a stove/oven, 2 weed eaters, and a bunch of smaller electrical items. I won't trash them, and I will find somebody that wants to fix them. Hopefully there is another "Brad the Fixologist" type person in my area.

Maybe put some ads up on Facebook Marketplace and I'm sure someone will come pick that stuff up and fix it.

@@Fixologist1 Yep! Around here, you have to watch out for 'scrappers' that say they will fix it, but instead take it to the scrap yard. I guess then it gets recycled,,,,maybe. I could take it to the scrap yard myself, but I would rather them be repaired. Thanks man!

@anthonythomas6109 put it up for sale for really cheap to deter the scrapers but find the fixers .then when they come and pick it up surprise them with it being free 😊

I’d like to strongly suggest you add an impact to your workflow. The pulley nut is a strong example of this. With an impact, you can probably hold onto the pulley with your hand and spin off the nut. Air ratchets have their uses, but usually an impact is a better choice.

So what happens on these gearboxes is the sacrificial bronze bushing wears thin and the axle gear moves away from the input gear, which isn’t a big deal if the owner fixes it as soon as it starts making noise and skipping. The axle bushing is actually a wear item that is supposed to be replaced (in pairs) when they go out of spec. Problem is a lot of people keep using the drive even though it’s making all kinda noise and they end up stripping all the teeth off the gears, which is what you got there. I used to buy those bronze axle bushings by the 10 pack way back when these mowers were common as dirt, replaced a ton of ‘em and saved many mowers that were trashed because the gearbox was thought to be bad. Those were the good ol’ days when Toro made serviceable gearboxes, now they’re just cheap sealed plastic General Transmission gearboxes…when they stop working chuck it & buy a new one. 😥

My guess is the input shaft bearings were dead too and so the pinion gear wasn't contacting

There was a bit of wobble there, yep. I suspect you're right.

Great as usual! Always love these! One suggestion though: Maybe it’s on my end, and my devices, but it seems to me like your audio levels may be a little low compared to most…

I've been using a couple different cameras over the summer. They have different levels of mics, and I try to level it out in post, but don't always get the balance right.

I take the front drive out i have cheap china bearing for top and wheeles. Couple toro gear box bushings. If gears not too bad re shim gear box, put it back in service. Seems front drove wear more than rear drive.

Good work through vid on this mower; Have the exact same Toro mower I am rehabbing right now; I wanted to install both a fuel filter and shut off but only have space for one or the other so going to install the shut valve. Debating on whether to take apart the trans or not to install fresh grease, will see how the drive operates once I get it running once my new pull cord assembly arrives.

Taking the bottom cover off the trans and changing grease is pretty easy. I recommend it.

$54 dollars for a new gear box. I would have gone that way myself. Ive got a 20 yr old rear drive recycler myself. Im thinking rwd holds up better than fwd. Or maybe the newer models are cheaply made.

Needs to go Frehley forward. In the UK we just don't seem to have this leave your broken mower out kind of thing. My pal lives in Tokyo and when he moved there in the 90s he told me about Gomi culture where people leave out virtually new consumer electronics, like a 2-year-old hi-fi because they had got a new one. My guess was they just didn't have a secondhand market but that was just my guess. A complex culture to judge from the perspective of an insular and ignorant northern British male.
Spinning Frehley. I'm not even into Kiss but I can't let a shit gag go to waste.
