I'm wondering if those side shoots are the "CORMS"-(seeds) that garlic forms?? They usually form on the sides of the garlic and can be planted to make a new garlic plant. Some break off and get left in the soil & will grow as well.
Something that I do that I've not seen ANYONE else do when harvesting garlic is I cut the garlic bulbs off the stalks leaving approximately 2 inches of the stem on the garlic bulb. I do this with my onions, too. They both are laid out to "cure" and form the paper skins that protect the garlic. I then clean all the stalks, remove the dead parts then wash well. Then I chop the stems/leaves and dehydrate them to use in soups/stews or have even made leek/garlic-like soup from the larger white part of the stems. I always add garlic to my leek soup anyway and by using the white of the garlic stems gives a wonderful fresh garlic taste to the soup. By cutting off the stems (you've got to leave at least 2 inches of it on the garlic bulbs), did not affect the quality nor taste of my garlic bulbs/cloves and they cured as they should to form the paper skins.
I'm a senior on social security and can't afford to waste anything I can use for food so I tried it and it worked well so I continued to do it. I've been afraid to mention it on any YT channel fearing I would get crazy flack from people saying the stems/leaves HAVE to be left on for it to cure properly.
I'll even go one further. I also cut the roots off, leaving a bit on the bulb, wash them well, and cook with them, too. I've even dehydrated them to use later as you get a LOT of them with a large garlic harvest. They have a mild garlic flavor that is perfect in recipes if you want a garlic flavor that isn't overwhelming. I love garlic and use it in almost everything I cook. I was curious about eating/cooking with garlic roots so I looked it up on the internet. Would you believe that some chefs actually do use garlic roots in some of their special cuisines??? So I wasn't so crazy after all. I also looked up if you could cure garlic without the entire stalk/stem and YES YOU CAN. You just leave at least 2 inches of the stem on the bulb & cure. It is a lot of extra work to clean, wash & chop up all those stems but once you try the garlic/leek soup from the fresh garlic white stem or use a handful or two of the dehydrated stems/leaves in a soup or stew, you will never let another one go to waste by leaving them on the bulb to cure. Look it up. It is on the internet as well as using garlic roots to cook with.
For the new gardeners out there, if you leave your garlic in the ground too long it will rot, especially if you have a lot of rain in the spring like we do here in coastal AL. I left a few smaller garlic in the ground hoping they would grow a bit more when I harvested what was ready and they didn't grow any more and the bulb ROTTED or was soft, mushy & unusable. The stem was still there but pulled right out of the rotted bulb. I discovered the smaller garlic were the small cloves that I planted (as I said earlier, I don't like to waste anything) and they just don't grow as big as the larger cloves. Now I know 1st hand why people say to choose & use the largest of the cloves to plant...because they give you the largest garlic bulbs at harvest
Thank you, Mrs. "H" for a great video! I ALWAYS look for all new videos you put up. Even tho I've gardened over 30+ years, I ALWAYS learn something new & beneficial from you & Mr. "H"! Love y'all!

Northern climate here, zone 4 in Wisconsin. We planted 160 cloves of the Music variety of garlic; this variety makes large cloves but only has 5-6 cloves per bulb, this garlic is spicy. We also planted 160 cloves of Chesnok Red garlic, this variety makes smaller cloves but have 8-12 cloves per bulb and this is a more mild tasting garlic.

I put mine in food processor and then in freezer bags flatten them out like pancakes and when I need some I take the bag out of freezer and break off a hunk, it breaks off easy and just put the rest back in freezer, it stacks well in freezer too when the bags are real flat.....

I'm in NE Ohio, Zone 6, and I've successfully grown hardneck and softneck garlic. We plant in late October and harvest after July 4th. Some favorite hardnecks are Bogatyr, Purple Glazer, Music, Spanish Rojas and a family heirloom Italian. Softneck varieties also grow well here, like California early and California white. I also grow a random softneck variety that I buy from a local Mediterranean grocery store each year. I've got over 100 bulbs growing currently - growing garlic is so satisfying it's addicting. 😂

Ours is almost ready. We have been growing all our garlic for many, many years. It looks like we will have a good harvest this year as well. We always plant several varieties, because you never know which will do really well and which will be a flop. I use the peewees, when I make bone broth. That way I don't have to bother peeling them in order to use them. I still have a lot left from last year. I think I will dehydrate those. I also am going to make a fresh jar of honey fermented garlic.

Zone 5 - Iowa. I've settled to two kinds - Music hardneck and Inchelium Red softneck. Them and the shallots and potato onions I cover with a bit of straw or leaves with 4 mil plastic over the top, then bricked down to overwinter. That saves them from heaving out in the freeze and thaws. The soil is well fed with organic matter and the garlic grows the size that you have there.

    • @dudeusmaximus6793
      @dudeusmaximus6793 Рік тому +1

@@MyPeacefulGarden Lately it's been early December to plant. I try to watch the forecast to see if it's not going to get above 45F from there, but before the hard freeze. Sometimes the planting window can be tight. Have the ground ready to go, hopefully it won't be too wet when the time comes and have to mud them in.
Harvest around July 1, will let them dry down in the ground as long as I can but if there's a rainy patch coming will take them out before so they don't deteriorate. Dry them in a shed.

Also my first time growing garlic in Iowa Zone 5a. Our winters are cold, so I mulched 4~6 " with shredded leaves and straw. To help it sprout, should have removed most of the mulch in early spring & brought it back when soil was warmer, but left it in place. Mulch kept the soil moist (finger test) even though it was a dry spring, so I seldom watered. Didn't want soggy roots. Planted 5 Nov, harvested 5 Jul. Soil was still moist at harvest. Decent bulbs. Lesson learned: pull back the heavy mulch until the garlic sprouts and then bring it back to retain moisture. Hope this helps...

I braid my soft necks. They are much easier to braid than hard necks. I do run a string of yarn or bale twine in it to strengthen the braid because they get pretty thin and brittle in the basement during the year. When they start sprouting, I take the leftover and chop them up and freeze them or dehydrate them. In Kansas, in my basement, they can go until March before sprouting...but nature wants too make babies, and they will sprout.

Another nitrogen fixer is composting chicken poo for at least six months and cover the ground around the plants to retain moisture and add nutrients to the ground.

Hello Ms.H, I'm in the south zone 9b Louisiana. So far, the elephant garlic is doing well in the garden

I planted Music garlic, it’s ready but it’s too wet to pull it. Being from the west it’s mind blowing how different the gardening is in the south. It was up in Feb and my perineal herbs never totally went to sleep for what was supposed to be winter! Love it!!

I’m in east Texas zone 8b. I planted two soft neck varieties and one hard neck and they have all done well. I planted Dec 1st and they all survived the deep freeze we had here mid-December. They were the only plants that did! It even killed my protected potted trees. 😢 However I am excited to have the garlic scapes and I did learn that it’s good to refrigerate the seed bulbs for a couple of weeks before planting and it helps hard necks grow well in the southern heat! So far so good and I’ll be harvesting the soft neck varieties tomorrow as they are very ready. So excited! I planted Inchillium red and red Chesnok and one other I can’t remember the name.

I am in a 5b-6a zone in the mountains of BC and I have 74 mixed cloves planted since October 20th 2022 and 15 cloves Elephant garlic....all hardneck varieties. Softnecked don't survive our winters. I did not know to give them fertilizer except just our kelp/fish blend of 20/20/20 that I give everyone twice a month. I gave them their last wateting last night. They are harvested in 10 days. I braid my garlic 10days after it is pulled. I prefer Elephant Garlic because it has a more uniform flavour and a bigger more mild clove.

I have 60 hard neck cloves that are doing so well this year. Planted them last October, we’re in WNY zone 6a. The scapes aren’t out yet, usually harvest in July. Good video, definitely have to dry it to get the storage life.
