BIG TURBO Polaris Slingshot Is the Ultimate Tuner Troll (Big Turbo Slingshot)

- The Polaris Slingshot is no doubt one of the strangest vehicles on the road today. In stock form it promises a raw and visceral experience that is similar to a motorcycle - in fact that's what they are classified as in the DMV. However it never seem to catch on with enthusiasts due to it's numb factory engine and of course the three wheeled setup. Thankfully ZZPerformance took it upon themselves to turbocharge the factory Ecotec engine while also giving it a glorious four wheel conversion. It uses a Camaro limited slip differential, driveshaft, and ZZP's very own turbo kit - making this Slingshot a 500HP MONSTER with almost no weight to carry around. So let's see if ZZP fixed EVERYTHING I hated about the Polaris Slingshot.

Yeah so that happened.
What a creative build by ZZPerformance!
Should have reviewed my 08 impala ss since you were in my city for this review😭
A nice build with some better tires and some aero ktm xbow may be in trouble
It gives me Ariel atom vibes ..Ive been wanting an old beater Lotus exige to supercharge because they are decently quick, light, have a manual and toyota reliability... but maybe this is a cheaper option. find a beater slingshot at copart and buy zzs kit. wish it had a full roll cage tho... p.s. save the manuals, Ive never owned an automatic they are boring, cost more to fix and take no skill to drive
Have you noticed rises and fall in subscribers recently? Thus is the third time I've subscribed in about 12months, even though I've never unsubscribed. It keeps happening with MRfuedal too
ThatDudeinBluse those aren't so-called "fixes" as you so eloquently put it, those mods are completely ridiculous, and will probably get someone killed. Never mind the fact that someone like me couldn't even register that thing in my state.
Honestly the 4-wheel conversion alone makes the slingshot so much better
Absolutely. I'd actually drive/possibly own one if it was this thing specifically lmao.
Yeah I really don’t see why it was 3 wheel in the first place tbh
@@anthonyvelarde6964 3 wheelers are dumb
If it’s 2 it’s a bike just get a bike
4 a car or a ATV, get wither
Doesn’t matter if it’s a Morgan or a slingshot both stupid and are missing a wheel

That thing generates a lot of nervous laughter. Glad you enjoyed the ride! #GoFastNotBroke
I’ll bite. How much is the 4 wheel conversion?😊
@@michaellecompte1889 We haven't officially brought the kit to market yet, but depending on options it'll be $7k to $10k.
Is it a “bolt on” kit or something you install in house?

If they came from the factory like this, I'd actually want one. lol
And if they came from the factory like this, all the extra red tape would just make it cost as much of an ariel atom.
Unfortunately, they legally can't. It's taking a loophole to be road legal with the 3 wheel setup.
Just buy a Ariel atom, KTM X bow or a caterham.
@@Aron-ru5zk They come in stick?
@@z3n0n_v1 yes
I cannot believe they put 500hp in one of these. Literally laughed out loud when you said it was making 500whp. What a mad man's vehicle, I love it lol.
The 4 wheel conversion looks seriously cool. Zzp did a fantastic job with it
Okay this needs to become a kit. I'm excited to see these take over tracks in the next 10 years.
We should hopefully have our production version available on the site before next year.
@@gbrunner24 how do you go about making it street legal?
@@taylorhickman84 The slingshot is already street legal
@@yamkaw346 until you convert it to a 4 wheeled vehicle...
@@taylorhickman84 Guess it depends where you live. 4 wheeled vehicles are perfectly legal in my area.
This is almost akin to Ariel Atom except you have to mod it your self. I wonder if youd have a hard time getting it on Track as it is technically a motorcycle.
Reminds me of the KTM Xbow
I dont think you'd have an issue for an HPDE track day. Even though there are rules about which vehicles can get on track, if the event organizer approves it you're good go go. There werent suppose to be trucks/suvs at my last event, but a 700hp F150 and a Kona N were both out there.
I’m the driver for this sling at ZZPerformance, when it had 3 wheels I couldn’t get on track. With 4 it gets put in the “special” category and/or kit car. Have only done auto x so far but hoping to do road course and 1/2mi races next year.
Actually that depends in where you live. Here in BC, they're registered as cars.
@@harrimat100 technically Canada classifies them as “auto cycles” and aren’t legal to purchase in Nova Scotia.
Bro this is one of the most unique builds I seen. This gives me the same energy as the supercharged Titan V8 swapped 240SX. Very cool!
It no longer looks like a bathtub on 3 wheels from the side and back. Now I want one. I would rock a stock one with just the rear end conversion.
Finally a actual review of a four wheeled slingshot. I’ve always been curious.
Pretty cool watching TDIB drive around locally to where I live. ZZP is a legit shop they know their stuff for sure
Been watching you for nearly 10 years and never commented, but I would never have thought to se you driving around my neighborhood in a video! Keep up the good work :)
This made me consider it as an actual vehicle that I would buy to build and turn into a fun weekend car
Thank you for this demonstration of the capabilities of a finely tuned Polaris Slingshot. My answer to your question is, "Yes, this gives me a totally new take on the Slingshot." The stability of four wheels added to the enormous increase in power puts this concept into serious high performance territory. Threewheelers are great, but they place the third wheel right on the most slippery part of the road. Fourwheelers solve that problem and add a lot of comfort, security and performance. I can envision myself actually undertaking long distance drives - even crossing continents. A new perspective, indeed.
See this thing almost every day on my drive home from work. Always caught my attention when I saw 4 wheels and heard a BOV and manual transmission. Who knew you were in town test driving it! Cool to actually see what’s been done to this.
I love the things ZZP has done, add this to the list!
Man, it's weird seeing TDIB footage so close to home. This build makes sense as a demonstrator. I wonder what it would be like down at The Dragon.
It performed awesome. I took it down to NC this summer. Stayed in Maggie Valley as there was a slingshot event there and I took it all over.
@@kyledewey3657 haha, fun to see you on here Kyle. I think the last time I ran into you guys was at BC Speedfest. I've wheeled a 500HP F-Type through those roads a few times. This car has to be a blast.
@@mtnman1984 man I miss speedfest. That was such a great event and well ran. This sling is a handful but a blast.
@@kyledewey3657 It was a unique event in the half mile world. I was their photographer the last two years and loved how close I could get to the finish line. I can imagine that car demands respect, but makes quick work of it. I'll bet you were pretty busy behind the wheel.
@@mtnman1984 that’s awesome. It was cool how everyone could walk the pits and the photographers were in the mix as well on and off the field. As a company we now usually go to the Indy Airstrip Attack in Marion IN. It’s a very well run event like Speedfest was. If you have not been yet you should check it out. It’s a really good time.
Never thought I’d see you on my home turf man! Hope you enjoyed GR and ZZP, can’t wait for you to come back!
Noooo way. A 4 wheel slingshot. Crazy
This 5-Speed Manual is no slouch either, it is the Aisin AR5, the Modern Aisin R154, updated with triple sychros and better gearing. They are both the same case with interchangeable bellhousings. Amazing budget beefcake manual swap for JZ or LS crowd and cheaper than going T56/R154/CD009. The guys at Fabbot made 880whp in a LS Colorado before the AR5 broke, quite strong.
Oh boy, definitely furthest from anything I’d guess. lol
I would totally drive this. It’s like a knockoff ariel atom
Look up the DF Goblin. Along the same lines, but cheaper than a slingshot and you build it yourself
The goblin doesn’t handle half as good as this.
Looks like atom or crossbow now both of which look weird but a force in performance and handling. I’m very curious to know if it would track / autocross well or if the the wheelbase is too short.
That conversation is gonna be hot as a firecracker 🔥🔥🔥
Polaris tech here, at the last dealership I worked at we had a customer that had a turbo kit on their 2016 slingshot. I don’t know the horsepower numbers, but I know it pushed 23 pounds of boost with only 3 wheels. Lemme tell ya, it was pretty sketchy. Especially with a bald tire in the rain 😅 I couldn’t imagine how crazy the 4 wheel conversion is.
Also Polaris only had a manual option in the 2015-2019 models. They currently still have them in the newer models. The automatics “auto drive” was introduced in 2020. The manual is definitely better than the auto drive system in my opinion. Great video! I had a smile watching the entire thing.
First the cobalt, now the slingshot. So glad you finally found ZZP. Now don't think we've all forgotten about the Sonic you bought that Rob Dyrdek used to own...
Sooooooo much better with four wheels. My God what an improvement 👍👍
Poor man's Ariel Atom? To be fair, I can't see this be had for less than 60k. Super cool though!
This guy I talked to at car meet said about 40k total including slingshot
@@hatch450sx3 turbo kit, ecu, wheels/brakes, 4 wheel conversation, built motor, maybe tranny, etc???
I personally thought that conversation would set you back at least 15k. Then I saw another fabricator sell a kit for 7k.
This full package for 40k and getting on your back and wrenching is a steal.
I work for zzp and built this. You could make something like this with about $15k plus the cost of the slingshot.
@@hatch450sx3 shit, didn't think it would be that much, it scares me with no roll cage. that thing was spinning in 4th gear!
@@hatch450sx3 that's fucking crazy
This is awesome. They should make this an option for the originals!
I drove one of the older Ecotec powered versions that was turbo and thought that if they were a 4 wheel vehicle they would have been a killer track toy, glad to see a company came through with a kit for them because the 3 wheeled version was utterly useless in those power levels 🤣
I didn't even finish the video and I liked it already! Cool
Df goblin substitute??? Better??? Cost???? So much want !!!!! On all seriousness I own a fk8 type R and I want 1of these with the 4wheel and turbo setup
Nice. Was it expensive to convert
This would be a dope autocross car! I wonder how well it corners. But this is a dope creation, it looks like it would be a good time. This would be the only slingshot I would drive 😂
It corners like it’s on rails.
What??? You were only a few minutes from my house! 😂 So cool to see you working w zzp 👌🏼
Awesome drive! I wish I could have caught up with you around GR to enjoy it! The fact that you could drive this that fast on 28th street is amazing!
Dude, that thing looks like a blast to drive! I’d love to run the Dragon with that thing.
Now we need to figure out how to make it AWD. 😁
Never thought there would be the day I would want a slingshot 🤣
I knew this was michigan just by you driving down 28th street. I double took so fast. BADASS video man!
Crazy seeing some local places in a tdib video. Hope you enjoyed the GR/Wyoming area minus the potholes.
For real!
Sooo cool. ZZP killed it
This is exactly what I wanted to do. Bummed and stoked that it’s already been done at the same time
I rented a manual one a while back and wouldn't have used "boring" to describe it. I would break the rear loose on every street corner and it sounded a bit like a vintage british car and getting you up to illegal speed pretty easily (and I'm a motorcycle guy).
With that said, the rear angle view of the Slingshot makes it hard to look at. Adding a wheel was definitely a great idea, and more power, well you can never really go wrong with that, unless the added weight ruins its balance. I'm sure Polaris would sell a lot more if they had 4 wheels.
I rented one in Vegas and had a blast. But yeah 4 wheels would have been cooler
I'm a very big supporter of ZZP
I been wanting a 4 wheel conversion for years. Glad to see how great it is.
Slingshots move amazingly well without a turbo on 3 wheels id love to drive a manual one with a turbo as long as its still 3 wheels.
But then no traction 😢 Even stock, slingshots have trouble with traction. One wheel and no weight
6 years ago i build a rear subframe to bolt on miata rear suspension. Used a ford Thunderbird rear diff. The thing was STUPID fun man.
Absolutely will be looking into one of these 🤟🏼
A brilliant build by ZZP. It reminds me of an Ariel Atom on a budget.
I feel like a slingshot with the 4-wheel conversion just seems like a more refined DF goblin. But also I have never drove either. Just an observation.
A major improvement
Wow that thing is unreal manual 4 wheels turbo holy crap soooooo dope !!!!
Now that’s a slingshot I can appreciate!!! I’ve driven one of the early gens and def wasn’t anything to write home about
Slingshot is cool! But for those on a budget or maybe you want a fun winter project you can build an NA Miata kart with an eBay turbo kit. It'll be almost the same thing.
Super cool ! Needs some 33" tall drag radials though
So much better!!!! Love the four wheels and the overall package. Just curious to how much the kit costs for the full change?
You were right in my neighborhood. ZZP does some super good work.
Theirs a 4 wheel slingshot in my city and I was all about it, looks like so much fun. Before then I feel like it was a ripped of trex
I bought a zzp kit for a cobalt about a decade ago. Slingshots use a GM ecotec that is a pretty good engine. It was a fun little car, but I was disappointed in the customer service I received for the amount of money I spent with them.
Very ingenious idea that ZZP created to fix the handling and power delivery.
Love those 4 wheel conversions. Interesting to see if that messes with the licensing of them.
I know that three wheeled vehicles in a lot of states avoid a lot of regulations which would be the probable reason for Polaris to keep it three wheeled. I'd be interested to know if adding a fourth wheel yourself would require additional modifications to have it legally registered
Classification follows the VIN. The only people that can change it are the original manufacturer or a judge on the federal level. Which isn’t going to happen. It will always be classified as a motorcycle or autocycle depending on the state you live in regardless if you have 3 or 30 wheels. The DMV doesn’t give a shit and even if they did it wouldn’t matter because they do not posses the power to do anything about it at their level. You cannot be cited, ticketed, or have your title taken from you by anyone at the DMV, SOS, or any officer on a state level in any state. There is also a video that Billy Gentry (a police officer) did on this subject which you can find here ua-cam.com/video/DKUYhoCLpWE/v-deo.html
500 hp , no roof... idk if they intended too but "slingshot" is the perfect name.😂
David we need you more in Michigan lol
Can someone please direct me in the right area to look for the slingshot for wheels set up?
This the 2.4 le5 motor. This motor comes in the chevy cobalt Saturn ion Chevy HHR and 3 other gm vehicles. The LSJ and LNF motors found in the cobalt SS can make even more power
I don't see much weight transfer, are you able to get it to hookup the tires under boost?
Love it We love it !!!!
This package is the only way id ever want to own one.
I rented one in the OBX for a day. (3 wheeled) It was fun but that one rear wheel kinda freaked me out and didn't have enough traction. With 4 wheels, I'd buy one! Really needs a roof and a side door of some kind for those of use that are not 5'-6" and skinny to to get in and out of it with a roof on it.
haha.
I think it's the best slingshot ever!
I can't tell if every time he puts really puts his foot down if I'm hearing air being sucked in by the turbo or if it's the tires spinning. I can always hear the air whooshing once he hits boost but then he guns it and there's a whole new sound. It sounds to me like wheel spin but is he really just lighting the tires up for half the video including on the highway?
Sign me up!!!
Reminds me of one of my TYCO R/C cars when I was a kid. Just the four wheel conversion seems worth the money to me.
so how much is it to convert an old one like this one?
How’s it handle and brake. If not upgraded from stock, it’s only a (tire) smoke generator!
I never thought I'd say this about these Geriatric trike bikes, but that thing is the beez kneez man! I'd totally rock one of those with the fourth wheel and that turbo making all that torque, yup! I think the tranny would be a huge concern for me as it probably wouldn't hold up very long, but I'm sure it can be built up to be stronger through trial and error. All in all I'm impressed, interested and intrigued. I can't say for sure that I'd willingly spend the coin to build one of these but I really wouldn't mind having one. 🤘👍
So does adding a fourth wheel mean this must be re registered as a car rather than a motorcycle? Or it's just a modified "motorcycle"? Is it 50 State Street legal? Thanks. Badass!
I never thought I'd like one but I love it with 4 wheels
I have a ton of zzperformance parts on my supercharged 3800
This is freaking awesome!
That is really cool. I would buy that. The regular slingshot. Not safe in LA Cali. 👍😎😎😎❤❤
So much better now I want one!!!!
4 wheeled slingshot is badass. I want one.
So to follow the marketing line... this is a slingshot that gets a forearm brace, for launching projectiles much more accurately and quickly.
Did ZZP fix the lack of space for your feet around the pedals? Feels like I'm driving a mummy sack sleeping bag, last time I tried one.
This is what the slingshot should have been, or at least offer a 4 wheel version and I would have one
Imagine this with someone crazy aero and tires, would be a RIDICULOUS car for time attack lol love it
I own a CBR1000 powered Tripod Car in Australia. Adding the 4th wheel is a dream of mine and this has inspired me to push for it now even more
ran a turbo kit from zzp on my cav before it blew up. Great company that loves to make weird motors fast.
And with 2 wheels in the rear, it essentially makes this a stripped saturn sky.
Dude. That is so bad ass!!!! I love it!!!
Ecutek engines are amazing. I had the Solatice GXP and you could get 300 HP out of those things with a simple stage 1 tune and intercooler. that’s the one thing that always turned me off about the Miata, was that it was so low on power.
this is exellent, honestly is similar to a an old school f1 car in terms of power to weight ratio
Polaris should hire yall to fix every last one of these .... They look so dumb with 3 wheels .... 4 just makes sense , nicely done .
That looks like a blast!! How did it handle with that setup? Looks like it would be a great weekend track or auto-x car too!
nice one blue man! so basically the power is useless unless you could get some stickys on there. Nice vid!!
To be fair the tires and street were cold and my street tire were on there. In the summer time when it’s hot they do very well. When you have drag radials on it’s unstoppable.
was just up in GR taking my CDL class B test always enjoy driving past ZZP
Baddass first I’ve ever seen 👍
I'm just curious how it passes as a motorcycle at the DMV. I thought the 3 wheels allowed it to bypass car regulations. Looks like mass fun!
Did you register it as a car when the 4th wheel is added?
It's basically a street-legal go-kart. I'd definitely drive one in the summer.
