CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Peter Ustinov once again takes on legendary Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in Guy Hamilton’s all-star version of Agatha Christie’s EVIL UNDER THE SUN (1981). With a whodunit cast that includes Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, James Mason, Nicholas Clay, Sylvia Miles and Roddy McDowall, it is shot in sumptuous Mediterranean locales and costumed outrageously by Oscar winner Anthony Powell. Set to the glorious music of Cole Porter and topped off by “a spot of murder,” it’s the perfect murder mystery end of summer vacation.

Best performance: a three-way tie. Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith, and Nicholas Clay’s black bikinis.
Steve: "A little bit too small [short but deliberate hesitation] for his roundness..." Lol.
@@willemvandeursen3105 So much roundness to Clay's bum, mercy. Reminds of the SNL skit with Dana Carvey as George Michael talking about his butt: "Bow down and worship it, before it destroys you!"
Nicholas Clay was only 53 when he died of cancer such a loss he was a lovely looking guy, this film is a good old watch with such a great cast every one is great in it.
So tragic. He was a terrific actor as well as being a great beauty. I love him in this! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 I believe he was Lancelot in "Excalibur". Helen Mirren as Morgan. You should review it!
@@davidburgess3882 My favorite EXCALIBUR line: Merlin (Nicol Williamson) tries to catch a fish in a brook with his bare hands but just ends up soaked, then he says to King Arthur, "Remember, there's always something cleverer than you."
Steve Hayes doesn't just do a review of a film or even a synopsis. Instead he takes the viewer on a journey INTO the film. No else does this. No one else has ever done this. These videos need to be preserved in a major film collection. They are irreplaceable.
The costumes alone are worth it
I so agree!!! Powell was a genius!
I love this film. The dialogue, the clothes, everything. Diana Riggs' red beach hat I loved. I dragged my first husband to see it when we were dating and he thought it was boring...and yet I married him. That didn't last long. My 2nd husband listened to this episode, he was driving and I didn't wait until we got home to watch. Now he wants to see the film. I chose wisely the second time around. ;) And who doesn't love Cole Porter's music?
LOL! That reminds me of an old song..." Christie's better the second time around"... Enjoy re-visiting it and thanks so much for watching! Best Steve
I’ve looked online to find that red hat - no luck :(
OMG! Nicholas Clay! So gorgeous!
Such a HOTTIE!...he could make laytex an endangered species. LOL! Steve
I adore this movie, it's the best indulgence ever made. Gorgeous people, gorgeous location, gorgeous music and even a plot. Steve you do wonderful impressions - someone I used to know in a theatre took a call at the box office and said "Oh hello Sylvia, how are you?" and she said "How did you know it was me?"!!! All the women in the film are hilarious and it's funny and clever and perfect.
I agree on all accounts! Shere perfection!
One of my favourite go-to camp classics. So different from the other Agatha Christie adaptations from that era, but absolutely hands-down the most hilarious and fun.
So glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching! Best; Steve
once again you hit it out of the ballpark, costumes check, plot check, insider stories of actors checks , use of the word flaming check. eat your heart out TCM!!
Ah, Judy! Thanks so much! Have a lovely weekend ! Best Wishes; Steve
Everything about this movie is Fabulous.
The Cole Porter sound track is perfectly matched to the period.
Love this movie.
Me too. terrific all the way! Steve
I remember going to see this movie in the early 80’s. It has always been one of my favorites. As far as I’m concerned Sylvia Miles was the stand out of this film. She was hilarious. Everything about this movie works. It brings back memories of a happier time.
She was a great gal and bigger than any room she was entered. She was a real New York character and I loved seeing her everywhere. I especially loved her in this and she looked sensational! Thanks for watching! Steve
Yay! It's Steve!!!!
Yay! It's Juke! Thanks for watching! Steve
I met Nicholas Clay just before Excalibur was released and his star suddenly rose. He flared very brightly for a short time but his career didn’t really sustain. In this film he looks gorgeous both in and out of Anthony Powell’s clothes. In the late 70s and early 80s, European men did wear very skimpy swimming trunks, sports shorts and underwear, it wasn’t just him. Powell really worked his magic on Jane Birkin in the final scene on the stairs, it is brilliantly directed and scored. I loved this film when it came out. I think it’s the most English of the Brabourne Christie films, with its camp elements, it seems to work best for a British audience. The original story was set in England but Guy Hamilton had a home in Mallorca and wanted the sun and the glamour of the Mediterranean. A stellar cast, mostly gone now, of course, they must have had a blast making it.
What a diamond cast!! Absolutely love this film, pure gold xx
I SO agree! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
No one does snarky dialogue better than the Britt’s (in my opinion) and this one is full of snark! Thank you for another great review Steve! You always make me smile . 😊
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! Steve
Love, love LOVE this film!! So glad you picked it. The performers, the clothes, the humor, the location, all fantastic! Maggie and Diana sparked off each other in the most wonderful way. It was great to see Sylvia Miles (never ever more glamorous) and James Mason snipe at each other. Like everyone else I swooned at Nicolas Clay and his swimwear, the kind that only someone who looks like he did could carry off. And Peter Ustinov is easily my favorite Poirot. Just a flat out great time at the movies.
Thanks so much! I love this one too! Everybody's great! Sylvia looked like a million! Happy end of Summer! Stay SAFE! Best; Steve
And don't forget the musical score chock full of Cole Porter delights!!
The absolute best cast. Peter Ustinov as Poirot was wonderful. Maggie Smith and Diana Riggs your the top . What fun. YOUR THE TOP Mr Hayes. Thank You!!
Thank you for watching, Bobbi! Much appreciated! Stay SAFE and bring on the Fall! OXOX Steve
The music over the opening titles sounds more glorious in quarantine. I miss traveling, dammit! The second half of the film is hilarious. Everyone is trapped on the island with a killer, but no one is worried in the slightest about being the next victim. Their attitude is “I didn’t have it coming, Arlena did. Cocktails in the main lounge!”
What could be more natural? I love the tongue n' cheek attitude in this one. "You know how funny people can be about a spot of murder!" Hilarious! Thanks for watching and have a lovely end of summer! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Another great Maggie Smith line! I have not seen the film in--literally--years, so thank-you for replenishing my smile, via refreshed recollection.
Yep, I've always chuckled about the fact that someone DIED on the island of unnatural causes and yet everyone continues to party and play doubles tennis!
I’ve got to watch this movie. Oh my goodness, that speedo, The wardrobe, etc
🍿💝🍿💝🍿💝🍿
Itried wearing a bathing suit like that once back in the '70's...I think it's still on. I know it's there somewhere...LOL! Thanks for watching and have a great summer. Plaese stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
“Roddy McDowall as a gay gossip columnist”. That could have been his calling in real life. 😉 I bet Roddy knew a lot of juicy stories from his years in Hollywood. I keep hoping he left an as yet found tell all manuscript somewhere. 🤔 And I’ve always preferred Peter Ustinov in the role of Poirot.
Roddy McDowall was a class act yes he knew a lot of things that would ruin so any careers. He was offered millions to write a tell all… But he took it all to the grave .. a class act and a gentleman… love him he’s my favorite actor…
@@judyblackman1215 and so brilliant from an early age. He was unforgettable in “How Green Was My Valley”, one of my favorite films. Cheers
Oh my, when he stretches his arms out to his mother after they've both been ill and she can finally walk, I just burst into tears---so moving!
and with all the firepower in 1963's "Cleopatra" (Taylor, Burton & Harrison) - McDowall was the best thing in it, IMO. as Octavian.
@@goodowner5000 I can tell we are all Roddy fans. 😁 I recall him in three other roles that made a lasting impression for me, but there again I do love sci fi. His character in the Night Gallery episode “The Cemetery” and the character of Mr. Vincent in “Fright Night”. And one of my favorite sci fi films, the classic “Planet Of The Apes” in which he played Cornelius. Even with all that prosthetic makeup, there’s no mistaking that voice.
Great review, Steve, but you forgot to mention the delightful, delicious and de-lovely Cole Porter soundtrack.
That's why I played it throughout. I like to let Cole Porter speak/play for himself. Delcious soundtrack especailly the end credits! Thanks so much! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Agree about the end credit, so hauntingly beautiful.
@@stevenhayes4063 …. The whole soundtrack is phenomenal. But the ending credits at the very very end when you can hear the trumpet hit the note and then go up an octave. And I also listen for that harpist to do that sweep.
Hi Steve,
So happy you have reviewed all of Peter Ustinov’s Poirot portrayals now! You couldn’t beat Anthony Powell’s costumes! Oh and Nicholas Clay’s bum in those trunks 😜
As Roz Russell said in "The Women"; "It's the BUM's rush inmelody, Dear!" LOL! Thanks for watching! Stay SAFE and Best Wishes; Steve
Another wonderful overview with your usual panache and joie de vivre!
"Tish! You spoke French!" ( Adams Family) OXOXOX Thanks for watching! Best Steve
FABULOUS!!! Just visited the filming location 2 weeks ago on Mallorca (Calo de Monjo) after watching it again several times the past months. Chanelling campy"Alena Marshall" on the lil cliff!;)) A great and favorite film!
OK ... I shall prefer Sylvia Miles' character! SHOULDERS by ADRIAN!:))
@@freifrauvonko9801 And who could blame you!?! OXOXOX
Lucky you! On my bucket list
COLE PORTER! How could you forget Cole Porter! The whole film is drenched in his music. It creates the perfect atmosphere and background for the great acting, costumes and gorgeous scenery. Certainly, the film would lack that certain something without it. This is my favourite Christy interpretation of all and the music plays a large part in that.
I so agree. I even have the soundtrack.
Great review.I used to work with Maggie Smith's father in law (Beverley Cross was his son/her husband)Ooooò the stories I could tell you about Mags! There was another great English actress called Geraldine MacEwan who had also worked with Kenneth Williams and she sounded like him too!
I ADORE Geraldine. Of course, you're right, both gleaned a bit from Kenneth. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for your conversations with the father -in law. WOW! Thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful weekend. Best; Steve
Geraldine McEwan also played Miss Jean Brodie in the Scottish television version in the late 70s
I shared this IMMEDIATELY. I had to rewind 7 times to grasp the full impact of Nicholas Clay.
Well, ther's no better excuse to rewind than "Claymation"! LOL! Thanks and Big hugs, Honey! Steve
Steve, looking so dapper in coral and black ... and Johnny sporting those stylish eyeglass frames and that neat beard. You boys are doing something right! And this is such a fun film, I need to watch it again because it has been way too long. I like this one even better than Death on the Nile.
Fellas, enjoy summer's end, and keep these reviews coming. They're always a distinct pleasure. Best regards always from another "tired old queen", LOL. I turned 55 in June so maybe that qualifies? 😆♥️
Compared to the TOQ, you're still a teenager! Thank you for the lovely compliments and for watching TOQ! We really appreciate it! Best Wishes, stay SAFE and enjoy the rest of the summer. Steve & Johnny
Steve - I absolutely love your movie reviews, especially if it's a film that I haven't seen. Now, I know what to watch next!
Great! Perfect for this time of year! You'll love it! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
There are so many things I love about this movie - the cast, location, costumes and Cole Porter songs from start to finish. Thank God these wonderful actors are captured on film. I wish they could go on creating wonderful new material. It's always hard to lose them. They call them immortals - if only they could be.
WELL, THE STARS WERE A BIT LARGER THAN LIFE, WHICH I LOVE. THANKS FOR WATCHING! BEST; STEVE
I knew it was going to be a great film from the watercolors in the opening credits.
Steve, you darling man~ I'm recovering from hip surgery, and this movie is just what I need to lighten my mood! You always come up with a winner!
Oh, I'm so glad! Please take care and do whatever they tell you! Sending you a big ole' TQ hug and hoping you are up and about soon! Best; Steve
Great to see a new post from you Steve! One of my faves (again). These were such fun movies- entertaining and sumptuous travelogues, to boot! And Chefs 😘 kiss to Mr. Powell's fabulous Costume Design- the standout to me is at the end of the film when Jane Birkin, after having dressed so dowdy throughout the entire movie, comes down the stairs with Nicholas Clay, dressed to the Nines (and then some) in that spectacular Black & White ensemble! The cattiness between Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg brings to mind the other Agatha Christie (Miss Marple) offering from 1980, "The Mirror Cracked" , w/Angela Lansbury, Elizabeth Taylor & Kim Novak. 😂👏👍
I loved Birkin's ensemble! SO CHIC!!! "Your ensemble does nothing for you." LOL! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes! Steve
Thanks for the introduction to Nicholas Clay!
Another 🔥 Nicholas Clay movie is "Lady Chatterley's Lover" !
@@goodowner5000 Thank you! This is tremendous news.
@@goodowner5000 And he's gorgeous in it!
A shame he died so young
Yay! New Steve! 😍❤

@@stevenhayes4063 Of course! ;)
I love these Agatha Christie's movies and your reviews. Your videos always makes me happy, so many great movies.
Your comments made me happy, so we;re even! Thanks so much ! Best Steve
This and Guy Hamilton's "Death on the Nile" are the two movies I watch when I need a lift. The beautiful Cole Porter music reminds me of a time when we could still have nice things. And the little black swimming suit makes life worth living. Such an entertaining review, thank you so much Steve.
Absolutely one of the best adaptations of this story.
I love it too! Thank you for watching! Steve
I've watched this film maybe a dozen times. I never get tired of it. The performances are wonderful with Roddy McDowell camping it up, Maggie Smith perfectly delivering cutting remarks and Diana Rigg playing an insufferable prima donna. And who could ever get bored of listening to James Mason's voice or looking at Nicholas Clay in speedos?
It's got ebverything! . To quote an old Bette Davis film title, it's got : "All This and Heaven Too"! Thanks god for wit and speedos.
OMGGGGG..Maggie Smith is SOOOOOOOO accomplished. My GAWDDDD!!! Thank you Steve. This was great ❤️👍
Thank you for watching! It's always great to show Maggie before "Gosford Park" and "Harry Potter". So brilliant!
You hardly age, Steve. I just watched something of yours from 10 years ago and you look the same.
That's because I count on Home Depot for all my make-up needs! You are too sweet! I'll give you an hour to cut that out! Much love and many thanks! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 lol
Maggie Smith was at our Stratford Festival for five seasons - she played the great Shakespeare roles Cleopatra, Lady MacBeth, Rosalind, Titania, Beatrice, as well as Congreve, Chekhov, Coward, and plays written for her. She was also a star at the National Theatre - saw her there in Hedda Gabler directed by Ingmar Bergman. And her first New York appearance was in revue - New Faces in (I believe) 1953???. She can do almost anything.
She was in "New Faces of 1956". Lucky you to have seen her on stage in so many wonderful things. I have an autographed phtot from her Stratford Years. I sae her in "Night and Day" and "Lettice and Lavage" on Broadway and in "The Lady In The Van" on the West End. Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Always great to see a review - since many years! XXX
Thanks, Luv!
A terrific movie!
Yes! Thanks for watching!
Fabulous review Steve … Roddy McDowall is my absolute favourite actor … loved his role in Evil under the sun!.
He was perfect. A great company of terrific actors having the time of their lives! Best Wishes; Steve
1:52 Denis Quilley (who played Maggie Smith's husband): What a handsome man -- a very distinguished-looking Englishman. I must do research!
He plays the Italian chauffuer in "Murder On The Orient Express". A reknowned stage actor. Always good! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
You’re fabulous, as always, Steve. I was thrilled to hear you mention Kenneth Williams !
My absolute favorite!!!!
Love This film!
HBO used to show it non-stop in the early 80's and it never grew old.
Peter Ustinov is a great!
I love the blonde, friendly version of Poirot.
He's like a big cheshire cat!
I like his version too.
Enjoyable as ever!
Thanks, John! Much appreciated! Steve
Needed this! Thanks guys!
You got it! Enjoy! Thanks for watching! Steve
I just found your channel a week ago. OMG, I love it and love you, Steve! I had no idea. I've watched several of your reviews from 2010 on up to now. You are just plain fun to watch. I enjoyed all of the big screen versions of Agatha Christie books. "Evil Under the Sun", I think was a lesser known that "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile", but just as good. I'm still looking for "Appointment with Death". Thanks for all that you do to make things fun and the behind the scenes folks too!
Thank you for watching! Appointment is the weakest of the series, but still fun. Have a lovely summer and please subscribe and stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Thank you, Steve, for your reply. Stay safe and have a wonderful rest of your summer and the rest of the year! Dallas
How can anyone review this movie and not mention wonderful Peter Ustinov!!! The bathing scene is one of the great comic vignettes of ALL movies. Fortunately there's a clip of it in another review of this movie. And the "You're the Top" scene is sublime.
Well, ya can't clip 'em all. Sorry 'bout that! Thanks for watching! Steve
Steven you read my mind! I was just thinking you should revue this movie, and low and behold you come out with it! Your reviews never disappoint. Wish you lived in the northwest I would love to meet you sometime or see you in a show when the theaters reopen!

Yay! A new review, my day has been made! This looks so good, I have to go seek it out, I have no idea why I haven't seen it yet. Oh my, those costumes! Love "all-star" casts, don't see 'em much anymore. Thanks!
And wait until you see the final reveal and that final costume! You'll be through the roof! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Always a fan of Christie movies I was surprised this one slipped me by when released. I happened upon it some 20 years later and was thoroughly taken in with it. I was also dumbfounded for not recognizing Clay from John Boormans' EXCALIBUR (1981) where he played Lancelot, but as a blond. Even his butt failed my recollection.
I still prefer the more serious adaptions to Christies stories but I will watch this one every time.
Totally fun! Thanks for watching! Steve
thank God you're back.. Hope you lovely fellas are vaccinated and safe but so nice to see you
We are and glad to be back. Hope you have a SAFE and lovely remainder of summer and thanks so much! Steve & Johnny
Thank you for the review!!

Thank you so much for sharing this movie with us. I have never heard of this film. I love Maggie Smith. I will have to track it down.
You are in for such a treat! Enjoy!
Steve! Im so happy you covered this particular camp gem! That Diana-Maggie duo really lights up the film. Wonderful review, as always
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!! Have a lovely Fall. Steve
Evil Under the Sun was great entertainment, and the repartee between the late great Diana Rigg & Maggie Smith was just delicious! I'm not surprised the cast had such fun making that movie.
Me neither. Although, practically speaking, as with "Death On The Nile", considering the hours, the heat of the location and the lights, the Anthony Powell costumes, though spectacular, must have been pretty rough on the actors.
I figured out who the likely killer was going to be, I would’ve picked the stepdaughter myself….
But after watching it, if you were doing an original movie, should’ve went with Maggie Smith as the killer
Hey Steve, fun review! EVIL UNDER THE SUN was actually the fourth Christie adaptation (THE MIRROR CRACK'D came out in 1980). As for EVIL UNDER THE SUN, I've only seen it once and it's okay, but still a disappointment following DEATH ON THE NILE. Great cast with some of my favourite actors, and it's still preferable to THE MIRROR CRACK'D, which is something in its favour, I guess.
And don't forget the MULTIPLE remakes of And Then There Were None (Ten Little Indians).
and then there were none 1974 with Orson Welles and Richard Attenborough
I remember seeing it as a teenager with my mother. After about two thirds something went wrong with the projection, the screen was black, and there was no one in the cinema to fix it - obviously they had just one guy starting the films in different cinemas, and they had to send someone looking for that guy... meanwhile the reels went on and on, and when the guy finally came and fixed it, we in the audience had lost part of the movie, and you know how it is with Agatha Christie, all the clues and red herrings... I was so angry my poor mother was afraid I'd trash the place. They wouldn't even give us some of the admission money back. I enjoyed it anyway, love those all-star Poirot movies, and I very much like your reviews!!
Oh My God! I'd have murdered the projectionist. Then they would have had two mysteries to deal with! Thanks for watching! Steve
As always, terrific and lots of fun . ❤️
So glad you liked it! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 We rented Evil Under The Sun a couple hours ago per your recommendation. Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Worth it for the scenery alone. Love from coastal Maine.

I have adored Sylvia Miles since watching her performance in Heat (1972). She looked great here and loved your impression of her. Lucky you got to meet her!😃
She was certainly a character. She kept at it right to the end. She showed up at every premiere, or sociol function that involved the business, no matter what it was, or where it was and was extremely vocal about what she thought it was regardless, usually in an outragious outfit. I admired her tenacity. Thanks for watching and have a lovely summer! Steve
Thank you Steve. This was fabulous as always. Take care and have a wonderful weekend, DA (Vancouver, WA)
You too Donald and thanks for the comments and for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
One of my faves! It's such silly fun while still retaining Christie's core mystery. Diana Rigg + Maggie Smith = movie magic!
Fun fact: Jane Birkin and Maggie Smith also appeared in the 2nd of the big star-studded Christie films, Death on the Nile. That one can't be missed!
I love and have reviewed 'em both, including " Murder On The Orient Express". Love those all-star Christies...at least the first threer. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Agreed! It tends to go off the rails after that. There are a few bright spots (like Faye Dunaway) but the shift definitely went to the BBC series.
Have you seen the new Kenneth Brannagh films? Curious what you think.
I’ve waited years to get your review of this wonderful film !!!
Best scene is when Jane Birkin comes down the stairs looking like a million dollars and their priceless reactions , especially Roddys
I agree! Anthony Powell's costumes were sensational to say the least! Thanks for watching! Steve
Greetings: I had a goal years ago to read all of Agatha Christie's books....so I did read this one but somehow I did not see this movie...but I shall.....Always great to see you and your reviews!
They changed the location form the novel and made Arlena an actress . Schaffer took alot of liberties, mostly with the comedy, but essentially the basic plot is the same. Thanks for watching and have a lovely end of summer! Steve
I LOVE this film. I have lost count how many times I have seen it.
Today? LOL! Thanks so much for watching! Steve
I am so glad you talked about Maggie Smith and Kenneth Williams!!! they had such a great history together that few people know about! and I second watching An evening with Kenneth Williams!! GREAT and hilarious!! - As for Evil Under the Sun this one has always been a joy to watch! thanks for covering it so delightfully!
Oh, yes! Kenneth Williams is hilarious! I could lsiten to him do his Edith Evans forever. And at the begining when he says; " My impersonations were Mable Constant Diros, Winston Churchill and Felix Aylmer and then proceeds to collapse the audience with each one! Thanks so much and have a lovely Fall! Best' Steve
I would have loved to been a fly on the wall with Williams and Edith Evans back stage - he touches on it in his diaries but the way he brought her to life in his stand up made it even better! Happy Fall Steve!
Hi Steve! I've been enjoying your reviews for some years now, but I think that this is my first commenting. So, whoever from your audience appreciated Nicholas Clay in that bathing suit, I think that they will enjoy even more watching him in Lady Chatterley's Lover. It's not a great film (not bad either), but it's nude Nicholas Clay galore, including full frontal nudity, as he plays the lady's lover.
Well, how nice to hear from you! I thank you for the info on the fabulous Mr Clay and for watching TOQ at the Movies all these years! I appreciate it and send you my Very Best Wishes Steve
Loved this particular version of 'Evil Under the Sun', and your review of it.
Thanks
I love this one too!
Would love to see you do Appointment with Death, mainly as it's got Carrie Fisher in it, and one of the TV films Murder in Three Acts with Tony Curtis!!!!
The former, possibly. The latter probably not. I love Piper in this and that actor who is the cute younger son...can't help it. He floats my boat! The latter one, I'm not wild about the story. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays! Steve
Another great review! You are simply the best.
Oh, Brenda! Thank you! You made my day! Steve
And the best score of any movie. Can’t beat Cole Porter.
Nope. "But if Baby, I'm the bottom , he's the top. " Thanks for watching! Steve
Hi Steve! You knocked another review out of the park. This is one of my favorite movies...the cast, the costumes, the location, the story, the one-liners...and you captured it all. Can't imagine anyone who sees your review not wanting to run to see this movie. Hope you and Johnnie have had a great summer!
We did! We so appreciate your comments and both Johnny and I thank you for watching! My Very Best; Steve
Shameful that I've only recently discovered your channel. Not only the reviews but the additional stories and information you add are pure gold. Simply the best.
I hope you subscribe and so appreciate your wonderful comments! Thanks a million! Best Wishes; Steve
Maggi sure had one hell of a career! And loved in Harry Potter but when DA started , that was it ! She was that show!!
The word indominable comes to mind. She is a FORCE!! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Absolutely fabulous review. I love all your insider stories and completely agree with you re Kenneth Williams. He had a razor-sharp wit; amazing talent. Loved Diana Rigg and Maggie Smiths time on screen together, hilarious. Many thanks xxx
My pleasure. I love that duo myself and wish they'd been paired together again. I would have loved to seen them in something classical together, such as Goneril and Regan in "King Lear". YIKES! Thanks for watching! Best' Steve
" Arlena could always kick her legs higher than anyone else...and wider". Roddy McDowell, Sylvia Miles! As you said " Outrageous ". And the Cole Porter songs - it's a singalong.
This one is always such a treat. I love the tongue in cheek way it's done and the costumes are as much a star as the actors.
I was so pleased to see the little blue dot by this subscription: another Steve Hayes review! I loved this movie and still do. It hit every button: costumes, adaptation, production, casting, performances. I think Ustinov's Poireau is the best. (I've watched and enjoyed Kenneth Williams' "Audience." I would recommend Ustinov's "Audience." It's wonderful too.) Mr. Hayes' review was perfect. Thank you for posting and giving us a glimpse of some wonderful scenes from the movie. What a treat!
Thanks, Chris! You made my day! Steve
So happy to see you!! Great movie! What a host of talent. Thank you for always making me smile. 😃
Oh, thank you for your comments and for watching! Best; Steve
My great pleasure! Thank you for watching! Steve
You had me at "Tired Old Queen", lol!!
LOL! You had me at "You had me at TOQ!" Thanks so much! Hope this finds you well, SAFE and Best Wishes! Steve
All you say is true...great cast, sheer delight...stay well, Steve and keep reviewing.
Thanks, Elliot and please keep watching! Best Wishes; Steve
I adore Magie Smith and do want to see his film...thanls somuch for sharing :)
This is, by a wide margin, the campiest of the all-star Agatha Christie films. The sight of Nicholas Clay almost, but not quite, wearing that bathing suit made me fall in lust--I mean love--with this film back in 1982.
I'm surprised it took you this long to get to it!
I like to keep a few tucked away for a rainy day! So glad you liked it! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
No one but you even mentions Travels with My Aunt--one of my favorite movies!
One of my favorites as well and on my "To Do' list! Thanks for watching!
I have just discovered your channel. Thank-you for sharing your insights. I dare say that I am not alone in cataloguing your style as being that of a dear friend inviting one into your home for intimate conversation, informative gossip, giggles, much laughter, sweets and tea. Also, as a fellow fan of the physique of the late Nicholas Clay, you would probably be entertained by his performance as "Sir Lancelot" within "Excalibur"---NOT the director's cut. Also, he portrayed "Oliver Mellors" within a version of "Lady Chatterley's Lover."
DearAidan; Thank you so much for the lovely compliments! I hope you subscribe, so I can visit you regularly. Yes, I have a "THING" for Mr Clay and have seen/loved both the other films. I also think that Anthony Powell's costumes only added to his alliure.. Simply divoon! Have a divine Autumn and thanks for watching! best Wishes; Steve
I love that Sylvia Miles made Evil Under the Sun, and Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse the same year, while Diana Rigg was in EUtS and The Great Muppet Caper. I love them both, and all 4 films, so much.
I had great fun on different ocasions with both ladies. And so terrific that they both eneded up in such a classy production looking so glamourous! Thanks for watching! Steve
I love Ustinov's Poirot portrays, sadly, I can't find any of the direct to TV movies.
You hit another Grand Slam home run, Steve. A well-known secret of Hollywood costume designers is that, if you really want to stand out in a big colour film, wear black and white. And that's exactly what Anthony Powell did for Jane Birkin in the finale. Cheers.
Such a GORGEOUS outfit! I screamed in the theatre when I saw it the first time.
Another wonderful review thanks, I will try and pay more attention to the bathing trunks next time I watch the film 😅
It will be well worth the effort! Thanks for watching! Steve
The absolute perfect accompaniment for a wonderful late summer afternoon, a TOQATM's review! Thank you, Steve and Johnny! (Hey Johnny, what's in the mug?)
It better be nuthin'! LOL! Thanks so much for watching! Best : Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Maggie Smith is a national treasure, as you say, both U. K. and U.S.A. But YOU, Steve Hayes, are my hero. Each film review is eagerly awaited and when they appear, they are loved. Never stop producing your reviews, please?
God, Hon, I absolutely ADORE you! And this film! So thrilled to finally discover you & this channel. "Well, it needn't raise welts on the tongue!"
Oh Stephen, you made my day! I hope you subscribe so I can bring you another classic every month! Wlecome aboard and delighted to have you join us! Happy Holidays and have a fun and safe Halloween. Best; Steve
Cole Porter’s music…..fantastic…!!!
Delightful, delicious & De-lovely!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ 👌
Such a fun film. I wish they made more of these. The mystery and comedy running neck and neck. Smith and Rigg really competed for the acting gold here, but PHWOAR - Nicholas Clay and those amazing black bikinis. I think he started my puberty back then. Of course, we also know how freaking fantastic he looked in his birthday suit thanks to Lady Chatterly's Lover and Excalibur.
And what's more, he could act! I loved him and it's terrible sad he lieft the planet so soon. Yes, I wish they made more of these, but I don't feel they have the old star power that they used to. But, we'll see....I heard Sir Kennet B. is lining up to do a remake of this one. Hmmmm. Thanks so much for watching and here's to beautiful men in tight black bikinis. Best; Steve
Oh, boy....worth buying for that bathing suit.....and Sylvia Miles.
Yup! A worthy purchase anyway you look at it!
I was about 12 when I saw "Evil Under the Sun" for the first time and Nicholas Clay in that swim suit was my own personal "Spring Awakening."
And I say, What better way to wake up!? To paraphrase an old Kellogg's cereal ad from my childhood; " Nicholas Clay in spandex...The Best To You Each Morning!" LOL! BBest Wishes and Happy Summer! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I was a Kellogg's, kid myself. Clay's "Two Scoops" definitely "Snap Crackle & Pop." Hope you have a good summer too.
@@nono-io5kt Those stupid commercials are forvere lodged in what's left of this memory forever...oh, well..."It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long" ( Viginia Slims Cigarettes 1971). UGH!!! LOL! Steve
