Another very useful video. I love your presentation style and your honesty. The food looks absolutely fine but I'll probably avoid anything with pastry. Thanks for the tip about getting to the Glasshouse early, I want to try all the included dining options.
So good to hear you complement the staff; they do work so hard and always seem cheerful and polite.. A very fair judgement of all the food choices. 3:28
Only been on Explorer, we thought it was fine! It looks pretty similar on Discovery. I have to say we preferred the buffet on Marella to P&O. We found the staff on Marella a lot more personalable too, probably because the ships are smaller. Most of your food look absolutely fine and delicious. Cheers for sharing 🍻
Cheers guys. It is interesting to compare the different lines. We generally tend to gravitate to the restaurants but use the buffet when we need to. We have an included drink review coming out on Friday - we know you like your pints! Hope to see more Iona content from you soon. Happy travels!
It’s Friday night - dinner, glass of wine and settle down for your latest video ! I was in stitches with your “impressions” at the start. As ever, a thoughtful and informative video. Nice to see the subscriber numbers ticking up.
Thanks Nick. Next week you will be able to drink along to our drinks review! Subs are going up so hopefully we are doing something right. Thanks for watching 👍
Fair and honest reviews. Was on Discovery2 last summer, food in 47 Gallery 47 and Islands buffet was generally very good and the service was brilliant!! The restaurants are light and airy with great sea views.😊
Thanks for your comments. It was a fantastic cruise for us. We have more videos on the drinks and destinations coming up, which you may find interesting.
I was on the same cruise. I thought everything was amazing. The staff on the ship couldn’t have been more polite or professional if they tried. The food was great. Some people want to pay cheap as chips, but expect Cunard service. Pay an extra £5k and have the same argument. Thank you TUI and Marella. Our cruise was an experience we’ll never forget
Some people love to complain! You are absolutely right. We found the cruise to be excellent value, and the staff were amazing as always. If you want Michelin starred food, you go to a Michelin rated restaurant. If you want West End quality entertainment you go to the West End! Thanks for watching. We have some destination videos coming out that may bring back some happy memories of a fantastic cruise 😃👍
I come from the North West of the UK and was brought up on toast and jam, porridge and so on so I would be more than happy with bacon eggs and beans, sausage and mash. fish and chips I want normal healthy food not a load of food with names I cannot even pronounce. I personally have no wish to be some sort of foreign food expert.
@dlgregory35 To be fair to Marella, they cover most bases when it comes to food. The fish and chips wasn't brilliant though! Thanks for watching and commenting. It's much appreciated. 👍
@thomascampbell-r4e We are off on Marella again at the end of the week. Trying Explorer 2 for the first time. Looking forward to it! 😁 We have had some great holidays in the past with Marella. Thanks for watching 👍
Myself and my family travelled on Explorer 2 in July ‘23…all a the food was excellent…every single meal we had was fantastic and the staff were superb…so much so we hope to go again in July ‘24.
We have always enjoyed our Marella cruises. Explorer was great, but we probably slightly prefer the Discovery ships. Thanks for watching it is much appreciated 👍
Thanks, Michael. Your comment is much appreciated. We try to make the videos we would have wanted to watch before going on a cruise. Thanks for watching 👍
Caribbean cruise April 24. The food on the Discovery was absolutely fine. We ate breakfast in the buffet restaurant and had dinner in 47 degrees most evenings. The quality was a very high standard and plenty of variations every night.

Just come back from a week on discovery around the east med. Food was probably the biggest disappointment on the ship. It lacked variety, taste and some of the meat/fish was undercooked. The main dining room served the same food as the islands buffet, so unless you wanted waiter service there was no difference in the food between the two restaurants. The coffee was always weak and pointless, the only good thing was the bread and pastries. Very cheap and cheerful! Service wasn’t bad but it could have been better too.
@ropo9 Thanks for the heads up. We are on Explorer 2 next month, so it will be interesting to compare with how it was on D2 in January. Thanks for watching and updating us. 👍
Yeah be interesting to see if it’s the same across all their ships or just the odd one that is bad lol. The ship in general was nice and you could see they had spent some cash on the recent refurb so it wasn’t all bad haha
I've only ever cruised on Cunard and Star cruises so it's interesting to hear your thoughts on Marella. I'm vegetarian, too, so I'm always interested in seeing the vegie offerings on ships. I agree with you that being served is much better than serving yourself! I was surprised to see that room service cost extra.
@@TravellingLightLisa There is always at least one veggie option on the regular menu in the main dining room but if you let the maitre D know, he'll give you a vegetarian menu to choose something for the following evening. There is always choice in the buffet.
We did the Marella in January 24, all the restaurant's were excellent and the staff were top notch, cant fault any of it, roll on the next cruise to the Caribbean.
Howdy folks, fairly new subscriber catching up on unseen videos. At the buffett do they have a station where they cook omlettes for you? On Marella Discovery 2 do they have breakfast served in the MDR? Eat early in the MDR then come here later. My wife likes Lemon Meringue Pie. Do they have veggie burgers? Tortellini is good too. Whatever that dessert is in the Italian Restaurant it looks good. That is a flute glass. Hold it by the stem so you don't heat up the wine. Salmon is good. The pizza looks good. I like to check the undercarriage of the pizza. Am subscribed and hit the like button.
You are doing a cracking job catching up and commenting! It is much appreciated ❤️ There was an omlette station on Discovery 2, and breakfast was served in the MDR. The MDR is our preferred breakfast destination.
Did D2 last September and agree with most of your review. We found the food in the MDR a bit bland but we ate in Gallery 47 three times and loved it. We were a bit disappointed with the Glasshouse in the evening but lunches there were excellent. We are both carnivores so had plenty of choice. Service was superb! 👍
I think sometimes people forget what they have paid for the cruise. We’ve been on several Marella cruises, and have loved them all. If we wanted 5 star silver service and Michelin star food, we would probably book elsewhere. But for great food , fantastic itinerary and plenty of entertainment at a great price. Marella all the way.
Absolutely! It is good value for money. If you want Michelin starred food go to a Michelin rated restaurant or if you want a theme park, go to a theme park, not a cruise ship. Another thing that we like about Marella is that they cram as many destinations as possible in. Thanks for watching and commenting it is much appreciated 👍
Absolutely agree with Marella's overall value for money and the general standards. If only they'd treat their repeat customers a bit better. We're on our 8th Marella cruise, soon to be 9th. Never had a sniff of an upgrade. Only travelled twice with CMV and twice with Holland America, had upgrades on the second cruises from both companies. I suppose Marella are applying their parent company's ethos, you pay your money, you know what you are going to get and that's all you get. Can't fault the overall deal with the all inclusive though.
Got bck from D2 just 2 weeks ago, loved every meal. We did the buffet breakfast first day, then switched to 47* for the rest of the trip, the bottomless tea & coffee and the black pudding (not available in Islands) were what really swung it for us....also they did the poached eggs just how my wife likes them (believe me most people would call them ruined but that's how she likes 'em). As you say the staff on Marella are just the best, one morning there was no marmalade in our little jam holder thingy, no big deal, but I asked for some...what happens? 3 pots arrive in seconds...
So glad you had a good time. The staff are the best! You reminded me that I used to love the black pudding in the MDR before I stopped eating meat. Happy days! 😁 Thanks for watching 👍
No free cruises for us. All paid for out of our own pocket. We just give a genuine review of our own personal experiences. Thanks for watching and for your interest. 😁👍
We only had one bad meal on Marella cruises , and that when me and my parents had Beef wellington, the beef was very tough, enough to break your teeth. we have always find plenty of choice on board , and the food been very good , better than some of the buffets hotel places we had been to in Europe
Hi guys thanks for your honest reviews I enjoyed them very much , we have a TUI cruise booked for next January departing from Singapore and just wondering if this is the same cruise you are on? Phil.
Hi Phil. Yes, it will be. We are putting out more destination videos as well over the next few weeks. If you fancy subscribing, UA-cam should give you the heads up when we post one. Cooks Explore have also just come back and also have some videos on YT. You will have a great time. Any questions feel free to ask now or nearer the time. We will do our best to help. 👍
Thanks for your reply and will definitely subscribe and you can guarantee I will have questions, lol. Look forward to the video they will be a massive help in preparing for our cruise. How did you like the ports of call? Phil.
We really enjoyed all the ports. Our favourite was Singapore but we had some amazing adventures in other ports too. We will have a vlog on all ports apart from Langkawi and Penang Bay - We had days off from filming then. In Langkawi we found an amazing beach just 20 min walk from the Dock. Penang Bay was our least favourite - I would do an excursion if I went back there. Our destination vlogs will be out over next few weeks. Ho Chi Min city is this Friday which was a very emotional one. Thanks again for watching 👀 and any questions just ask.
I am just back from a week on discovery 2. I literally could not fault thing. The buffet was so good spent 3 nights in it. The world foods chinese, indian and mexican i did were amazing. The carvery unit for your british roast dinner was outstanding and the pies were to die for. The glass house tapas were amazing, Gallery 47 the italian could not fault and the steak and turf just finished of the holiday. We only ate breakfast in gallery as ran out of time. The lucked in glass house roast chicken chicken, pizza, pasta, salads or the snack shack for burger and chips or fish and chips very tasty too. Afternoon tea in he buffet what can i say 😋. Never tried the late night buffet as was too full . Breakfast in the snack shack with sausage, bacon and egg bap or the buffet for a fry was a quick bit satisfying start to the day. We did have breakfast once in the gallery formal dining area. Specials each day so we went for the eggs benedict.
So glad you enjoyed it and for letting us know. It sounds like you had a great time. We are currently considering another Marella cruise. Thanks for watching. It is much appreciated 👍
We were on Discovery 2 last year 2023,and I thought the food was hit and miss for sure, after sailing on D1 in 2019,I do think the standards have dropped
The food was generally fine but inconsistent. Things have definitely changed with Marella and P&O post covid. Look out for our review of Ambassador (we got back today!)- you may be surprised by the food.
Hope you didn't lose too much weight with some of your iffy choices! Must admit most of it looked lovely. I have just had a pizza and it would have seemed very small by the side of those you had. Cheers to you both and thank you.
I watch a lot of videos of people talking about food...their likes and their dislikes....but everybody´s taste buds are different..so what tastes good for one person doesn´t taste good to another.
Absolutely. Food and taste is very subjective. That's why we tried to show as much of the food as possible. I know that Bircher Muesli is not for everyone! 😁 Thanks for watching 👍
So true and they are mostly ordinary people as they think they are food experts when in fact most have no idea. Same as the so-called wide experts most could not distinguish between a so-called expensive wine and a wine from Aldi who seem to win all the awards.
We asked at reception, and it was actually over capacity as some crew had their families on board with children in their cabins. The Discovery ships are surprisingly spacious, unlike some ships we have seen on UA-cam. If you get to understand the flows of the ship in terms of passengers it is easy to find the quiet spots and avoid the pinch points, e.g, don't go to the restaurant just as the theatre show finishes. Thanks for watching 👍
Marella hasn't the best of food and said I wouldn't go with them again ,but back again in Jan As said not the best food ,but itineries and price are brilliant The buffett isn't that bad Tbh all the cruise lines in this price bracket are much the same,
@latestscore5326 yes the prices are great for what you get. We also love how there are more port days rather than sea days. We are trying out Explorer 2 in a couple of weeks time to see if it differs much from Discovery 2. Thanks for watching and enjoy your cruise in January.
We have been on loads of Marella Cruise's....Never again...our family of 5 was on that ship last July23, bloody awful food...food standards and quality has fallen through the floor, even the extra charge Steak and Indian restaurants were really bad compared to 2022! too many corners being cut now!
Thanks for watching. Yes some of the food was not good at all . We are trying Ambassador cruises next month so will see what the food is like on there.
@@TravellingLightLisa Ambassador, we looked at these, as they stop in Belfast as a pickup-point, but they seem very expensive, considering there is no flights involved???
We got a great bargain with them. We will be doing a series of vlogs on them soon when we return showing cost, food, drinks etc. Keep your eyes peeled for special offers.
@@TravellingLightLisa glad you got a bargain, we paid over £7,000 (£5,000 for 2 adults + 2 kids) + £2,000 Single passenger (Father in-law) TUI standards have dramatically fallen in the last few years, while the prices are increasing every year, time to look at others now, its a pity as we always recommend TUI to friends, not any more!
Someone else who doesn't know how to use a fork and uses it like a pitch fork instead of what it's supposed to be used for. Food on the back of the fork not as a scoop. Yor husband knows how to use it.
@lizvickers7156 Whilst etiquette pertains to specific irrelevant and unimportant arbitrary rules and guidelines, manners encompasses much broader principles of polite and considerate behaviour. Manners are more closely related to personal character and reflect an individual's values, empathy, and respect for others. Lisa's manners are impeccable. Perhaps that is something that you could work on Liz? Lisa only has to turn her fork upside down, whereas I suspect that you may have to turn your whole life and belief system upside down. 😂" I've ordered Frozen Nougat"....." It's very cold" The kind of culinary insight you only usually get on Masterchef. 😂
Thanks for watching and sticking with us. Much appreciated.
Thank you for watching.
A good cheese board ,
We never get bored of a good cheese board!
I tell you Geordie couple, you're fartin sparks!
Lovely! 🫤 Thanks for watching.
2 more people with champagne tastes but only beer money.. Neither of which are good at food reviews
@tezzah... Thank you for watching and for your comments. We fully accept that we are no Giles Coren or even Gary Eats, but we are always happy to respond to constructive criticism to improve our content. Unfortunately, your comments and observations did not help in any way. Why not have a look at our Marella drinks review and try again? It is prosecco rather than champagne, though 😂.
