If large cap mutual fund houses cant beat index funds then why should investirs invest in activeky managed large cap funds? Why cant sebi get involved here and tell them that if you cant generate regurns for investirs then better shift their investments to index funds and return their expense ratio amount.
They don't beat index only during bull market. During bear phase the story flips. So it depends on overall cagr of a long period. Like for example if hdfc keep on falling then the index will fall heavily. On other hand active managers can reduce the exposure but in index it will stay at 12%

Cause they never beat the benchmark due to the expense ratio and tracking error

Active large cap cant beat passive counterpart consistently not always. Sometimes they may, sometimes they may not.
