  • In this video, my sister, Robin and I "spill the tea" while we drink coffee. We answer frugality questions sent in by viewers. Yes, we're both very frugal, but we DO handle some things differently. Watch the video to find out how we're the same and how we're different. We give frugal living hacks on everything from budgeting basics to how to deal with unexpected expenses. Robin gives some amazing new ideas on how to consistently spend less and save more every single month.

    One thing I love being born in Eastern Europe, when we have a family gathering, everyone who comes brings 1 meal of their own. It won’t cost much to just buy napkins, paper plates, plastic cups (which can be washed & reused). Even then, we buy them on sale. As far as food, we just make sure our meal will be supply everyone. Drink just water with a meal. Coffee/tea with someone’s dessert.

    Be a leader in your families. I announced decades ago to family members that there would be no more Christmas presents. I recall one of my nieces rang me the following year that they did the same that particular year and said it was marvelous that they had not wasted time trawling for presents no one really wanted in the first place. Go ahead be a leader.

      I agree. I think she's lovely. Robin hit the jackpot with those red highlights. When we were kids people referred to her as "the pretty girl with the beautiful strawberry blonde hair". As she has gotten older, the red color has become more pronounced. She has never colored her hair, though. It's all natural.

    Second, I'm only a few minutes in, but stress and time used to fuel our bad decisions to eat out. Took me a long time to learn that a stocked pantry will offer quick meals at no additional cost.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  8 місяців тому +162

      The wedding was amazing! Larry was able to go to the rehearsal dinner on Friday and the wedding ceremony on Saturday. He even made it through an hour or so of the reception before he got worn out and our friend took him back home for a nap. He is feeling a little better every day. We hope to have him back in the videos with me maybe by late next week.

    Home made tortilla are not meant to be as thin as the store bought. They have a different taste and texture. In my home country you will see stands/shops specializing in just selling handmade tortilla. They are for the elite and people that can afford them. Tortilla are meant to be eaten as a bread bun. You eat it to fill up and scoop up any sauces therefore thickness helps scoop up to clear the plate. In the U.S, the store bought tortilla are the norm but in small Mexican U.S stores you will find that they sell the masa by the lb. People buy the store bought because of convenience but will make their own for special occasions. Just a thought so anyone thinking your tortilla are not as thin as the store bought ones. Think about wonder bread v homemade white bread.

    drinking black tea, your sister said "if both are the same that would be boring" reminded me of "When two like people marry one is entirely unnecessary." (Money matters) Many times I would remind my hubby how very vital I have been in our 55 yr marriage! lol As for frugal weddings, I paid our minister with a bushel of baby lima beans which I picked the morning of the wedding!

    This was a wonderful show, Hope and Robin. Thank you! We homeschooled our 4 children also. It was such a blessing. We also reused curriculum, which helped with the cost. Like Robin, I’ve gone back to work and we are praying financial “catch-up”, in a way. But I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. And yes, Hope, a good cup of coffee is SO important- ! ❤️❤️

    Love hearing that you charge grown sons rent!! Our oldest boys are currently 18 & 20. They are attending community college, living at home, and working parttime "legit" jobs. They pay for their car expenses, clothing, and cell phones. We've told them that if they choose not to attend college (which they are paying for with cash) then they will have to pay rent.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  8 місяців тому +8

    Loved hearing from your sister Robin who is a “ neighbor”( I live in Mississippi). Immediately used her info on buying bulk foods. Also liked hearing how you all are helped by your well-raised grown kids who contribute to the household. I can really relate to hearing that Robin has returned to work as I am considering the same. Agree that Kroger offers some good deals though I wish they were not emphasizing eliminating cashiers as they are. You both inspire me to move more and more to a vegetarian diet, though I’m sure my carnivore husband would never be on board! Wishing Larry a speedy recovery. Sending him our positive thoughts. I can imagine that you all have had a very stressful time (though joyous with the wedding) and pray things will become a bit more routine in the near future!

    Usually we shop year 'round but the pandemic in '20 put us off a number of routines including gatherings and Christmas. '22 had us celebrating after the fact sans stockings and decorations with more of a single, bigger gift. '23 has had us tighter and also preparing for a summer government shut down. About the time we were spending more again we began to prepare for a fall and winter shutdown. The delay will benefit us and we will begin to think about Christmas '23 about the end of this month after covering expenses through December.

I am the one that does the budgeting in our house and pay most of bills but my husband is the one that knows how much money is left in the bank all the time, he works and i am a stay at home mom. It is hard trying to get your spouse to be on the same page as you when it comes to spending money.

    This was wonderful and informative. Your sister has a voice for broadcasting. She was looking around in awe of the lights and cameras and that was funny.

    My daughter works for our local parks department which is lucky enough to have two gyms in two parks and they are reciprocal - membership is good for both parks. One gym is in a community center so if you have a membership there are free classes such as yoga, swimming, etc., that you may attend as well. Not to mention the included free times where fiber artists, card players, painters, and other social groups meet. If there is a local community center in your town, it is worth it to look into it instead of a commercial gym.

    I love these coffee chats and it is so nice to 'meet' your sister 🙂 I am glad Larry is on the mend and I am continuing to send good thoughts and prayers!
    My hubby and I also shop at multiple stores. There is one on his way home from work, that is right next to the place we get our dog food from and another one about 4 miles from our house. They both have weekly sales, so we will shop there when the stuff we need is on sale. The other one is a little further out, so we save that one for once a month and go when we are also planning to run into HomeGoods or Michaels, so it is a 'batch' errand.
    I am almost done with Christmas. I also shop throughout the year, at sales and thrift stores, and have a 'gift bag' in my closet for Christmas and last minute birthday. My mom loves snowbabies and my dad loves anything chicken themed, so they are easy to shop for. My husband usually will tell me what to look for to give his brothers 🙂 I also try to make a spreadsheet of who I am buying for, the amount I am spending on them, what I am thinking of getting and once I get it, I can mark that person off (we see most, if not all, of the people we buy for when we visit my family in VA around Christmas).

      @@UndertheMedian❤️❤️❤️ it's very smooth. She bought whole bean and I grind it on the fine setting on my coffee grinder. Since I drink it black I don't like it very strong so it only takes one scoop for 8 cups of coffee. Thanks for the reply. I love you guys and watch you often.

    I make my own chickpea flour flatbread, it’s called Farinata in Italian and Socca in French, it cost Pennie’s to make mix in your favorite herbs. It’s perfect for dinner parties or sharing with friends.

    What a lovely idea a scavenger hunt ! Very creative ! Recently, I had unexpected car repairs. I was planning for some to take place in November but not in September ! Said goodbye to the Emergency Fund and to even more.
    But what that experience showed me in Neon Flashing Lights was TIME TO RETURN TO BUDGETING. Yup I had gotten too cocky and decided I just did not need to continue but OH Yes I Do. So here I go back to budgeting

    • @rocknrobin62
      @rocknrobin62 8 місяців тому

      I've gone through times where I got out of the habit of budgeting. I learned my lesson because that is usually when something happens. Don't beat yourself up tomorrow is a new day. You don't have to wait until the beginning of a month to start budgeting you can start it anytime. You will be ready the next time something happens and hopefully not too soon!
