    Great video. Thanks for sharing. This is without a doubt the most questioned aspect of the tegus husbandry. Made even more difficult by the crossing of blues ,reds and Black and whites.

    One question : After the hibernation, how long does it take until the tegu is back to normal? So how long does it take until it eats like before?

    • @Qualityreptiles
      @Qualityreptiles  Рік тому +1

      I do not feed for 1 week at least to do not damage the organs. Organs need this week to acclimate again to normal use. They do get water to drink the first day they start warming up.

    Such a great knowledge! I have one question, how do we know when the brumation time is over?

    • @Qualityreptiles
      @Qualityreptiles  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Whenever you want to you can wake them up. I wake mine up normally around feberuari or march. Depending what works best for me that year. In the past mine slept from september till march. So 6/7 months. But last years I do 3 months and think it has the same positive effect.

      @@Qualityreptiles Wow, it amazes me how Tegu could “pause” their life in such a unique way. I have 12 tegus right now and can't wait to brumate them this last year. Thanks again for sharing!

      @@Qualityreptiles I am still trying to understand this. Basically, we can put Tegu whenever we want them to hibernate and wake them up whenever we want as long as they seem healthy and don't show any sign of bad health like gurgling breath. Am I right?
      Do you have any concerning bad signs besides gurgling?

    Very good detailed video only question is how old do they have to be to breed

    • @Qualityreptiles
      @Qualityreptiles  2 роки тому +1

      I have bred females that where 1,5 year old. They where already very big and healthy full grown size. Size is what matters most when breeding tegus.

    Such a helpful video, thank you! Do they not need to drink water for all that time?

    • @Qualityreptiles
      @Qualityreptiles  11 місяців тому

      Thank you. No, when hibernation goes well (good low temp) then the body should go in a resting stage, where they do not need any food or water. It’s like they are frozen in time. When you warm them up, then they do need to drink a lot of water to start their body or they can get kidney damage.

    How long do they hibernate?

    Hi
    Again I’m unsure if I have to worry about my Tegu. Ten days ago I stopped feeding in order to prepare him for hibernation. After I stopped feeding it was visible that he is going to shed. I didn’t reduce the lighting time yet because I thought it is better to wait until the shedding is finished. Somehow the shedding doesn’t want to start!
    I have problems with the temperature due to the outside temperatures. He has no usual enclosure it is half of a room he can use. The heating is the normal radiator of the room plus two HQL (Mega-Ray) one with 150W and one with 100W. And a 100W LED hall spotlight. At daytime I have only 25°C at night only 21°C. At the basking spot of course more than 40°C. This is also where he is most of the day.
    I thought that caused the shedding problem so for the night in his hide I have added a heating mat so now there are 25°C at night too.
    Yesterday I checked his hide and I noticed it was wet underneath him. I never checked his hide before so I can’t tell if he ever peed in his hide. Is it something to worry about?
    I would like to carry on preparing the situation for the hibernation due to this temperature problems. Is it a silly idea as the shedding is not finished yet? I ordered the “forever” salve you recommended, I hope that will help too.
    I would be very grateful for any further advice
    Thank you!

      For perfect shedding you would need 45/55c hotspot. Nighttime temp of 23c or better 25c and higher.. and daytime 25/30c overall temp. But when starting to go in hibernation they often go in shed. I never stop them from going into hibernation. Sometimes they shed before fully going under.. but sometimes they finish shedding when coming out of hibernation.
      If you feel too unsure. Prepair this year and hibernate next year. Do it with full confidence. I will make more videos about hibernation. Maybe this will help some more.

    Again I need your help:
    I'm about to get my red Tegu ready for his first brumation. Now I'm not sure if I should put him in brumation or not. The reason why I think about not to put him into brumation is:
    1st What if something goes wrong and I don't notice it soon enough.
    2nd Some say a Tegu get's taller when he was not in brumation and I always want him to become a big boy.
    3rd I will miss him when he is sleeping for months.
    OF COURSE THE MAIN THING IS HIS HEALTH! Can you help me: If you say it is better for his health and his life expectancy I will put him in brumation. That is a bigger benefit than a big tegu and missing his company
    Thanks Stefan

      All my tegus go in hibernation and some are crazy big. Like Bear. He is over 5ft long and goed in hibernation every year. The time they do not grow they will catch up when they are awake again.
      As long as the temperature is constant and there is no high humidity. I do not see why it would go wrong. Specially red tegus are easy to hibernate with their high temps

      Just know black and white need 10/15c but red need 18/19c. 15,5 is too cold for a red tegu.
