  • I found this video elsewhere on the web, but no place to leave comments. So feel free! How do you think she compares to the divas who've performed this song: Angela Lansbury, Rosalind Russell, Bette Midler, Tyne Daly, Patti Lupone, Bernadette Peters,Betty Buckley, etc? Who gives your favorite vocal delivery? Who's acting of the song moves you the most? Enjoy!

    her "get off of my runway" was the absolute best.

      I couldn't agree more! What an absolutely brilliant way to deliver that line.

    INCOMPARABLE. Simply blows all the other Roses away.

    I'm am such a fan of Gypsy. The movie, the play, all forms of Gypsy! Rosalind, Ethel, Bette, Bernadette, Angela.. all of them. I've never considered Liza in the part of Rose but, gee whiz man, this is some GOOD stuff right here! WOW! Perfect!

    It’s the “dammit” before the last note for me.
    Honorable mention: “Get offa my runway.”

    She wasn´t as polished as other divas performing this, but my god, she gave a perfomance with such heart that most performers would trade their souls for :D

    She's absolutely fantastic. I don't know if Liza ever played Mama Rose, but she damn well should've. If she had, the show would be running until we were all dead!

    Minnelli "Rose's Turn" soars and is riveting and magnificent... a performance filled with heart & soul plus range and depth, thought I had seen this done before to the max but Liza! For whatever reason, too bad she didn't star as Liza Minnelli as Mama Rose would have been a timeless solid classic...Bravo Liza!!!

    I don't want to get into a for or against Liza war but i have to say she does an extraordinary version of this classic. It is so different than every one else's and as a result she makes it unique and believable. Her take on many of the lines is original and valid. I saw Merman in the original production and she was unforgettable and will not be surpassed...and also the Bernadette Peters version...also excellent. It's a shame Liza was not able to do a revival when she was in her prime.

    If Judy had lived, I would've loved to see her and Liza in Gypsy. What do you guys think?

    "My mother was a strong-minded woman, but she was never a stage-mama. She was part of an era that was hard on women. She wanted so desperately to be a person in her own right, and I can understand that." - Judy Garland

    Why do I love this so much?? I can't stop watching it! I think it's quite good, but I must agree about the random "Damnit" thrown in between "for" and "me" WTF??? LOL!

    Hmm definitely following in the footsteps of her mum, of course a super actress and beautiful lady herself.
    Long time since I have seen and heard Lisa Minnelli sing
    Thank you for the post...

    I see what you mean - She'd be more like Tyne or Bernadette than like Patti in the role.
    When I first read that they wanted Garland as Mama Rose, I was like "What?! Dorothy? NO!" And then I considered it more -- She would have been a fantastic Rose: A selfish and driven woman with an extreme case of tunnel vision.
    That said, I loved Rosalind's human and believable take on Rose.

    Ethel owns the song, but Liza is tremendous here. The combination of her great voice and emotional acting puts her right behind Ethel on this song. Liza could command the stage like few ever have. She's in an elite class of live performers.

    By the way, I visited this page because it was part of a trail that led from an Ethel Merman (who recorded this same number from "Gypsy" as Liza Minnelli in this video) disco recording, which I just couldn't resist.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround

    It's hard to compare this to others. This is Liza's take on it -- It's not done in the context of the show. I feel like Liza would have been a wonderful Mama Rose, but the whole Liza persona would have gotten in the way of the character. That said, this woman is FIERCE and ELECTRIC. I would love to see her doing this in-character without all the Liza ad libs.

    Lisa was greatthen and particularly here but Ethel Merman created the role and will always own it. Angela was also a pioneer when she did Gypsy in Chicago and amazingly enought she can give extraordinary renditions even at her advanced age.

    I think some of you are getting it wrong. Liza is an actress as well as a singer - this is her acting. It's not shouting (what do you think of LuPone if this is shouting?!). It's her interpretation of a tortured number. It's brilliant.

  • @cardiffbear

    Quite a bizarre version Liza very lively - but I must say I enjoyed it - For me Angela Lansbury gives the most authentic performance - Tyne Daly close second. Loved Ethel belting it out, but Ethel doesn't give the emotions this song needs - Love Gypsy full stop.

  • @AtLastOnTheGround
    @AtLastOnTheGround 15 років тому

    I never said I was "worshipping" Liza at all -- I like her for what she is, but I don't think she's anywhere near Peters or Buckley.
    And it's not really fair to bash Liza's appearance (which isn't really that bad) considering Ethel was even less of a looker.
    Who's your fav Rose besides Ethel?

    But how are the best episodes of television series' such as "Adam-12," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Dragnet," "Emergency!," "Gunsmoke," "Law & Order," "Lou Grant," "Marcus Welby, M.D.," "The Naked City," "The Rifleman," "Route 66," "The Twilight Zone," "All in the Family," "The Andy Griffith Show," "Leave it to Beaver," and "Seinfeld," among many others, not more compelling than any Broadway musical?

    Liza's ragged performance only reminds me that if Garland had done the movie instead of Roz Russel, she would have given the greatest musical performance ever filmed. Perhaps no one has sung it as well as Bernadette or played it as well as Lansbury, but Garland would have been the best in every way.

      Max Minton disagree 10000 percent about Bernadette singing. Pattl Lupone has the pipes, the acting ability, all of it. I sat front row and saw her do it and it was nothing short of incredible . But! Garland would have sealed the deal for all future Rose’s. Simply the best .

    Um...
    You're forgetting that the reason Steve wrote the song "Everything's Coming Up Roses" as a low-comedy, easy-to-act song for Rose (while Herbie and Louise were the ones reacting in horror) because he knew Ethel was just a mediocre actress..

    Oh boy, do I disagree with this one--"A bad show beats good TV any day."
    First of all, let's establish what you mean by "show" is a Broadway or Broadway-like musical, not a well-written drama or comedy (without music) such as "Death of a Salesman," "Long Day's Journey Into Night," "The Odd Coupé," or "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

  • @gymnastix
    @gymnastix 11 років тому

    Just because one shelves out $200 for the displeasure of sitting among from several hundred to a few thousand other persons does not make the entertainment superior.
    I will grant you some rock & roll (I'm using that term broadly to encompass heavy metal, Motown, punk, rockabilly, soul, and even some more gritty pop) bands and singers may be infinitely more interesting than some bad television. But a Broadway musical? C'mon!

    @hostingdude Why would someone pay money to see a "worthless" performer live?

  • @gymnastix
    @gymnastix 11 років тому

    That said, I would always prefer a great, even a mediocre episode of a television show over some hackneyed Broadway or Broadway-like musical, where characters unnaturally burst into song. I would especially avoid like the plague any contemporary musicals ("Andrew Lloyd Webber, "The Lion King," "Rent," etc..).

    Out of breath. Minnelli certainly had “pizzazz” and presence. She could dance … fairly well. Superb comic actress. But goddamn, she could never sing. No musicality at all. Did she ever connect one note to the next note with any sound remotely fluid, vocally? People compare her to her mother when in fact the similarities are superficial, at best. People are desperate to hold on to some scrap of her mother by encouraging Minnelli as a singer. Weird. Yet, if Minnelli’s people in the ‘70s had steered her toward superb comedies written for her, she would have absolutely enjoyed more than just one box office hit film as a leading lady. She’s a brilliant comic actress. Arrested Development only drove that point home. Even her Broadway shows were never classic or memorable. Overpraised due to Judy Guilt.
