Seemed like you had good technique. The thing with rugby is you have to add all the other variables - Playing a game at high intensity, Getting tackled and smashed by man mountains, being "assaulted" at the bottom of every other ruck, sore ribs, aching legs, sucking for air AND then having to kick within the 60 second buzzer (Thats were the magic happens). 20m is relatively easy - 30 is pretty good(as you were doing), gets way harder once you go past 40m. Not to mention hostile crowds booing you. Wilko was a legend. Next go face a pro cricket leg-spinner/fast bowler- that should be fun to watch.Good vid!
You’re absolutely right!! I would love to get invited to a rugby club to shoot a video where we include all of these variables. The thought of a fast bowler at scares me, so let’s get a video done 👍
People love to talk sht when kickers miss easy kicks but don’t really understand what it’s like 😂 Marty banks won the super rugby for then highlanders this one time with a kick, dude had a broken rib. As a kicker myself kicking at a park or practice versus kicking in a game are two different games. I’ve had to make kicks while my ankle and knee feel like soup. I was lucky there a few other blokes in my team that could kick a bit so when you know you can’t do it it helps to have someone else have a crack but sometimes it’s on you. Your ankle is sprained well gotta make a plan and that was amateur and school level, I can’t imagine what it’s like a pro level when you also have thousands of people screaming at you. Guys like pollard or carter are a special breed for keeping composure
Been a goal kicker for about 16 years. Started when I was 10. Tried all sorts of ball angles, techniques and kicking tees. Its similar to a golf swing, in the sense that it can't be taught (besides the basics like keeping your eye on the ball, and following through with the swing). You have to experiment and see what works best for you. Try 2 step run-ups, try 10 step run-ups. Try different ball angles, try standing 90° to the ball, try standing 45° to the ball etcetera. But anyone can do it at the end of the day, some gifted more naturally than others, some have to put a lot more work in to perfect the craft.
Awesome idea for a channel! It would be good to do a pt. 2 where you run a hard 1200m, getting your heart rate close to max to simulate game scenario. Then award yourself an imaginary try or penalty and kick within 90secs of finishing your run. It becomes a lot more difficult when fatigued
Here's an idea - how hard is it to drive an F1 car? You can do it in a simulator. I drove an F1 simulator at an engineering conference. It's a massive challenge to keep the thing on the road, let alone go fast.....
That's a great effort considering the boots, ball, your lack of experience. Fun idea and I'd live to know how you got the lines to track the ball trajectory?
Thank you very much, so I did the tracer lines on After effects, because there is no camera movement I didn’t use the 3d tracer I just traced the ball with the pen tool 💪
Ok it is at altitude which matters but majority of grown men can’t do that 😂 takes a special breed, some people just have a massive boot naturally for some reason so add good training behind that and you get some gems
Michelin star cooking is definitely one id love to do, Skateboarding is one that scares me as ive tried it many moons ago BUT thats what this channel is all about
If you're someone who has kicked a round ball a lot, then it is fairly easy (from short range). You'll do better than many rugby position players who never kick
A few folk have mentioned on here that I should have ran about before I kicked the ball just like the players and they're bang on tbf! Still really interesting to see what we're capable of if we put our minds too it 💪
It is very easy, in these conditions at least. Game conditions is a different beast cause now you gotta deal with pressure, noise, time and most of all fatigue and soreness. It’s not easy to kick after having had your knee knocked 10 times 😂 thats why kickers at pro level spend hours on end practicing so it becomes natural and you can focus on shutting out the other factors. Especially high stakes games you gotta go to your happy place to forget the pain and pressure you under. Then deal with the facts if you miss and lose the game idiots who never kicked in their lives will blame and judge you having no idea what it’s like. Had a mate who was pretty decent at it during practice and loved to make fun of me (school days banter) then one day at first team level my knee was too sore to kick, I was still playing but couldn’t kick so I asked him to do it. From right in front too, he was also a soccer player so he felt confident. My home boy missed the sht out of it and after that apologised and said I’m never taking a kick again. It’s really really hard, it’s like sprinting 100m is easy but not just ran the 1400m and 800m just before than
yeah nah everything's good bro, from the technique to the kick you just need to take into accountablility things like that wind which can really affect your kick
Yeah it's not easy. Factor in that a top level kicker will have a crowd on his back, the pressure of winning games and the benchmark is >90% success.. Etc. It's a bit like taking a penalty in football. Looks easy but to get a rate >90% in those conditions is tough.
First of all you did very well for your first time, Congrats! But saying that, either these camera angles are not doing you any justice or the pitch is way smaller than that of the professionals (or at least of the professional clips you showed). Loved the video mate!!
Pro pitches aren’t bigger it’s just stadiums are huge so it seems like it. What makes it hard is the crowd and most importantly this ain’t NFL so you ain’t on the bench waiting to come on kick and leave. Nope you been running and getting bashed this entire time. Some times tu expected to take a kick when your knee or ankle just got bashed and you not even sure if it ain’t sprained but if no one else can take it and you need the points then you gotta figure something out. That’s what makes good kickers special it’s being able to shutout the pressure and pain which not everyone can do hence why it’s so hard especially at pro level. I remember the highlanders winning the super rugby and it came down to a final kick make it you win and miss you lose. Marty Banks made the kick and it wasn’t an easy one it was from the corner at an angle which already isn’t simple to do in calm conditions like this man is doing but add to that it’s a final, it’s all up to you and he had a broken rib. To this day idk how this guy got in his happy place in his head to shut out all that but damn that’s a special breed of human. A broken rib is extremely painful and nothing you can do, other injuries you can mitigate by not using that limb or what not but the ribs move an inch and it’s agony.
Not to be disrespecful but your measurements are not accurate on that mini field thing but your still kicking good but that line your kicking on is the 22m not 40 out(your still kicking good) and you should try kivking with a size 5 not a 4 and not to be rude but that does not look like a full field it look alot smaller(again its just my thoughts and not to be disrespecful)

You are wrong in your quotation of JW's kicking stats. The numbers you mention are only part of his career (his time at Toulon). His international record is great but not at 95% success rate.
@HOWHARDTV That's cool. Ive been watching England since 1967 and was blessed to see Jonny play countless times, a wonderful player that rarely if ever played a poor game.

You should attempt the afl drop punt at some point. Its a super unique kicking style that i think will present a lot more of a challenge!
I will have a look into this, thank you
Just to put things in perspective, there are under 18 schoolboys in South Africa that can kick the ball over from 60-65 metrers - regularly.
Fair play! That is some effort!!
