It is honestly not very big except in Brisbane. Most of them end up going to NRL as well because there are way more opportunities to a make a living from it. Kalyn Ponga a prime example of rugby talent gone to NRL.
Ponga like most of the guys who get scholarships to play union in high school started off as a league player. Don’t complain when a league player ends up playing NRL, stop giving them scholarships

@@2MileMen Hi Jacq, rugby in each state as own state championship. Like high school, each state divided into size of the population then end of the season best teams will play for state championship. All High school rugby’s funded by own H.S Club with a support of parents. Currently, I split my residency between Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. H.S rugby structure is the same in both states. All the coaching staff is volunteers. In Club Rugby part of USA rugby, it has Division breakdown Level I to IV: Div I is one of the best and none of these players get paid for playing rugby. Unless you play USMLR.

It's good to see so much young talented Rugby players in a school boys Rugby since Onion tv season 1 you can see all the culture School Boy rugby shows by having that bond and comradery in local footy, but one day most of the top of talented players will wind up in Europe or Japanese Rugby.. The reason NRL is kicking Super Rugbys ass is all about TV deals, i grew up watching both codes NRL(Arl, nswrl and Superleague) and Super Rugby(Super 12s,14s,15s), NRL was ok cause they showed delayed Friday night game and one Sunday footy match it was ok product but Super Rugby was the best it had all the best players starting in 1996 it still showed all games live on Fox Sports which meant live in pubs and etc so ppl could watch it @ home and pubs before NRL kicked off and then channel 9 started showing live games on free to air tv and that was the game changer, Super Rugby got left behind and the two reasons which is people stop getting Foxtel and 2nd All Blacks and Wallabies got selfish by stop letting best talents out of Pacific to play for their provincial sides rather telling them to play for them or else, and "else" came calling which was Japanese, French and British and Irish clubs, pacific islanders and 30yrs+ ex Wallabies and All Blacks made more money for European clubs and the game more popular there then it was and now Super Rugby is fielding club players who back in the days wouldn't get a call up to Super Rugby so now there is a big hole left by not just by older players which is 30yrs+ ex All Blacks or Wallabies but also now current players leaving for Europe and Japanese Rugby, Super Rugby has gone from A+ Product to now like a B Grade, lots of South Africans now play in Europe and Japan, it's not just hurting Super Rugby but the national team as well, South Africa made a big difference by choosing players from Europe and Japan for Springboks and look what they did won the 2019 World Cup, Wallabies does the same with 60cap+ players.... Make Super Great again, sell rights not just to pay tv but also free to air tv just like NRL does, let pacific islanders and other internationals play, 7 internationals maximum per team, you only gonna field 23 All Blacks and Wallabies so there 5 and 4 SR teams to fit them in plus have them okay and train with best internationals not with backup Club players, you can only be the best by playing against the best....

Rugby is a rich man's game in Australia. Most Public Schools do not compete at high levels here in Australia. Private schools have a monopoly on Rugby. Rugby League is a working class game. Played across all schools and local competitions. Rugby is for the Elites and it's suffered because of it
if Australia rugby is to succeed at the top in the world of rugby and to be as good as the New Zealand All Blacks on a consistant bases it needs to get out of this mind set at school boys high school level that rugby is played in private schools only where it can be played at all schools both public and private just like in league the best of both worlds and it can be played in the elites classes and the working classes rugby can be played by all classes of society no matter open to every one and look after club rugby as well and in the other states like Queensland NSW ACT Victoria South Australia Tasmania Northern Terratory Western Australia from, the grassroots up thats what Rugby Australia should be doing stop chasing after league and AFL and other sports codes and ratings Rugby Australia must invest in grassroots rugby from the lower ages to school boys and up to club levels focus on rugby itself get your house in order every thing else will follow
Personally I'd prefer they don't cover a SA First XV team because too many cynical and envious knobs like Canvas Bed above will ignore our skills and just say its steroids regardless of the boys' capabilities and even though guys like this don't even know the boys from a bar of soap and would rather just be slanderous towards them. Funny all the Grey College 2019 boys with local and overses contracts got in no problems after being tested. France took about a dozen of our top boys from last year. Not single one failed - the SA schools team gets tested every year and is no different to any other nation. I can foresee a weekly episode on Paarl or Grey will just be full of horrible finger pointing comments and will likely be somewhat unpleasant. I would rather we just get on with our business in SA without that negativity and slander - our kids don't need that. They know what they are capable of and can get the job done without a TV program.

I remember winning the GPS in prep (Under 12s 1st XV) undefeated, having our Colours awards presented to us individually by David Campese, heading up to QLD on tour and winning and then losing the last game on tour (we went to WB Movieworld the day before..) to TSS. 5-0. Was hard to take. We got to the sheds and every one of us cried our eyes out... except for one. He became a 4 time Olympian and national team captain. p.s. Wasn't me!
Do a story on schools that don’t offer scholarships like BBC and TSS do. It’s sad what QLD GPS has become. They play “barge” rugby with their monsterous scholarship teams. It’s been going on for 20 years which has coincided with the slide of Queensland and Australian rugby union.
Mate 10 years ago the thought of BBC offering a scholarship was laughable. TSS and Nudgee have been doing it since Jesus played full back for Jerusalem.
You should come to Scotland I know we aren’t as big as some other countries but a few of the schools here have some really promising teams in the country who have beaten some of the top schools such as sedberugh etc

Played southern sky’s at BBC years back we come from a small country town in New Zealand not even from top division school boy rugby and we beat BBC first XV twice and only lost to Takapuna grammar in the final (any other nz school) and BBC are a “prestigious” rugby school in Aus.

Unfortunately schoolboy rugby is limited to the elite in Australia, which is union's demise and what makes league thrive outside of the private school system and in the suburbs. Rugby Australia would rather ignore the failings of their grassroots entry and invest in the top end, which has hurt them for almost a couple of decades now.

Played southern sky’s at BBC years back we come from a small country town in New Zealand not even from top division school boy rugby and we beat BBC first XV twice and only lost to Takapuna grammar in the final (any other nz school) and BBC are a “prestigious” rugby school in Aus.

Zinb i’m from the rhondda in wales and we go on tour to ulster every year and beat them theres nothing to them mate, not sure about other schools but methody are not the best

Unfortunately schoolboy rugby is limited to the elite in Australia, which is union's demise and what makes league thrive outside of the private school system and in the suburbs.
Rugby Australia would rather ignore the failings of their grassroots entry and invest in the top end, which has hurt them for almost a couple of decades now.
Tom West they give a lot of scholarships out, around 50% of the first 15 squad is generally imported
