I knew we would be able to get a fresh new pickup for this Jazz Box. The pickup makes recording with the Guitar much easier.
I'm glad I got it sorted in the end
@@jazzguitarwithandy It's a really mellow sounding Pickup so it's a good match for the L7.
I absolutely love the Rhythm Chief pickup. My favorite jazz tone was Mundell Lowe's back when he had his Deangelico with the R.C. in it. Heaven. Open, big and clear not unlike a Charlie Christian, honestly. Lovely playing, too!
It's a very cool pickup. I agree re open and big tone!
I've played that arrangement of Cheek to Cheek on an old Harmony Nylon String Guitar that I've restored and got some new Strings for it (Thomastik KR116 Rope Core Flatwound Strings). Jazz actually works great on Nylon String Guitars too, Earl Klugh is known for that.
Yes- Earl sounds great on nylon.
@@jazzguitarwithandy Jazz on a Nylon String Guitar works great and the neat thing about it is that the Nylon Strings are much easier on the fretting hand than Steel Strings.
I luv the info on the gear prior to the song. It's great stuff for us gear geeks. Well done.
Cheers Don, it's been a bit of a journey with this particular guitar.
Beautiful, glad you found a great luthier to help you.
Oh yes, couldn't do this kind of thing myself.
It's quite a light weight pickup and that bit of Acoustic vibe coming through the amp is because of it being slightly microphonic. DeArmond actually made Tenor Guitar versions of those Pickups so that Tenor Banjoists could get that vintage Jazz Vibe on a Tenor Guitar.
I agree re slightly microphonic.
@@jazzguitarwithandy DeArmond should make those Pickups again someday especially for Tenor Guitars (and other instruments too) because the Tenor Guitar has been revived and more musicians these days want to get that vintage Jazz Vibe on a Tenor Guitar.
@@jazzguitarwithandy Now you have a fully functional Acoustic-Electric Archtop Guitar.
Fantastic sound from a fantastic instrument!😊
Many thanks!
Sounds great Andy! Glad you found a solution to amplify this great sounding guitar. You’re all set now to produce some great Chris Flory sounds. Regards,
Cheers Terry. Really happy with the pickup, since gigged it a couple times and it sounds great in a band context.
Neat solution and great sound.
Cheers
The three of you sound quite good together. I agree, the acoustic tone of the L7 doesn't seem to be diminished in any way by the pickup. Sounds balanced and good. Hope it works out for you.
Thanks
Wow! Just beautiful 😊
Thank you! 😊
Sounds unreal. Nice one
Thanks
That Vintage DeArmond Pickup has enough clearance for the strings to vibrate and it sounds more appropriate on a Vintage Guitar than the Modern Pickup did.
Yes, most definitely
@@jazzguitarwithandy The Modern Pickup was hovering way too close to the strings which can often cause them to buzz. StewMac even released a neat video on adjusting the height of your Pickups for Modern Guitars, and you might wanna check it out.
I have one of those pickups. It came with the 1954 Gibson L-50 I bought in 1992. That Rube Goldberg setup is super clunky and the pickup is too high and interferes with my picking. I love your solution.
It works really well and as you say doesn't get in the way with picking.
Rouxinol R-30 Strings would sound interesting on this Guitar, they have Color Coded Ball Ends so you can see which string is which, it comes with a Pick and actually they include a Wound 2nd String so you can get that Eddie Lang sound. Eddie Lang was known for having a Wound 2nd String on his Archtop Jazz Guitar so I think the Rouxinol R-30 String Set could pay tribute to him.
Never heard of those strings.
Rouxinhol are strings from Brasil 🇧🇷
@@myfavorites9686 Rouxinol means songbird
Wow 👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Sorry to hear about your Mom. I just lost my wife of 10 years, a month ago. She had lots
of health problems during that time. It's a difficult experience. One day at a time, Andy.
So sorry for your loss Don, that’s awful. It’s horrible watching someone we care about in pain. Best wishes, Andy
@@jazzguitarwithandy The Guitar has the pickup but when did you hear about your Mom and mentioned it?
That’s a great sound Andy, jut as good as my Guild Savoy!!!😅
Those Guilds are cracking guitars :)
Are you using acoustic or electric strings? Beautiful tone.
I'm using electrics, D'addario EJ21s work well for me on this guitar and with this pickup.
Curious, what did you hate about the McCarty pickup?
I didn't like the tone on the treble strings, but the big thing for me is it was cumbersome. It was just felt in the way.
@@jazzguitarwithandy That’s funny. I bought a 1952 L7 Cutaway with McCarty because it was my dream setup after trying a few other combinations guitar/pickup combinations including some with DeArmonds. I had it removed from the L7 because it interfered with my right hand too much. I miss the sound though. FWIW, have you been to the AcousicStandards channel yet? Romaine has dozens of classic Archtops and showcases great playing in context of different gear. Ironically, AS168 released today is an L12 with McCarty playing “Indiana” Great sound.
@@pawlowski6132 Same here re finding it hard with the right hand. Mine was a Lollar one, just sounded a bit bland to me. I do know that channel, I'll have to check that video out. He's got some lovely old guitars.
