  • An American couple with their sons visited 50 years ago the impressive temples of Angkor Wat and made an 8mm record thereof. Notice that there are hardly any foreign visitors then.

Great document about Cambodia before 1970. Thanks for uploading and bring back my memories as 70's. Beginning of video there is a very nice Mustang. I remember near where I live in Toul Kok there is another mustang with hardtop with Ligh blue color? I guess you do have another Khmer video is BW.

Wow!!! Thankyou Sir Michael Roge..This is the oldest and longest best video of Ankorian archeological park ever, thank you and its in the 60s and 70s I loved Cambodia in the 40sto70s and never wanted War to happened between communist and America at all if no War I believed Cambodia is very close to America and uroup then most countries , most of the statue are still there aswell , evendoe its loot by Siam during the sack of the last Ankorian king..but its looks much better then after the Khmer polpot...I like to find out more of the classic holiwood film talking in the clip.that shot at Ankor tom, thanks for such a Cambodian treasure videos..
There are also Warlord leaders named beside him if you looked carefully in khmer Sanskrit writing and which territories his came from and also his old armies abd ethnic armies mostly with animal crown on them followed him aswell..

Angkor is for me the most amazing place I have visited. I first visited in 1998 when there were very few tourists. I visited again in 2017 and expected the experience to be degraded by mass tourism but suprisingly that wasn't my experience at all. I was even more awestruck than my first visit twenty years before. This place is so atmospheric and beautiful it gives me goosebumps. It is heartbreaking to think of the absolute misery Cambodia would be plunged into shortly after this film was made.

Wonderful vintage footage of these precious sites, thankyou so much for uploading it. My mother visited in 1966 so I'd long been familiar with her photos. The situation when I visited in 2007 was quite different with many more tourists these days!
One of the saddest differences today is that so many of the statues seen in this footage have since lost their original heads: many of the Gods & Demons on the main Angkor gate (though new heads now fill the gaps there) and all but two of the figures shown here at Preah Khan are now headless (it's quite a shock to see those sculptures now). The seated statues at Banteay Srei temple were also missing when I visited (some were stolen or destroyed, others taken to museums for safety) but have since been replaced by copies.

It is so sad that I have not lived to see that year yet. Cambodian people are so happy between 1960 through 1775, and everything else went dark unexpectedly, not knowing what was going on. We went into oblivion, and even the government cannot protect innocent people.

I want to thank to Mr & Mrs Rogge for this 53 years old documentary of my birth country Temples of Angkor Wat, it’s so interesting of how my birth country use to look like on the year of my birth, especially our Angkor Temples, it’s actually looks more beautiful unique and antique back then, with all of these old Angkor than what it’s looking like at the moment

Thank you, Mr. Rogge, for this wonderful and extraordinary footage of Cambodia and its ancient temples from 1968. This is extremely incredible. Your videography of everything is spectacular!! I am just in awe and I'm so thankful and grateful to be able to see this and compare it to today. I've been visiting Cambodia (my birthland) since 2005. I am still learning so much about my culture and heritage. There's endless history I've yet to learn. But again, your video recording from before the war is just treasure to us Khmer. Thank you! I feel too. I think that film videos (analog) had more gentle and human eye like colors that make watching this video an impression of beeing there that I don't feel when watching the super high digital resolution video of today. digital even 4K fails to make me feel the human experience of being there, it has very high resolution but it creates an image that is not what i feel and see with my eye on the locations. Films were superior. Hopefully the current phototransistors electricity based image and video forming technology will die and be replaced with improved chemical light sensitive processes again.

I just started working in the early 1980s, my boss was a Cambodian who came to Northeast China to study and work in the 1950s. He told me that Cambodia is a poor place. This sentence left a deep impression on me and has always affected my understanding of Cambodia. This film completely subverted my perception of Cambodia in the 1960s. It is a film that reflects the real times at that time. Compared with China in the 1960s, it is not bad at all. If you look at the clothing of the street people, it is clear that there was no such good clothing in China at that time.

The more interesting footage from a cambodian perspective is what the cambodian world of 1968 looked like. The temples remain but that fragile society is gone. Grateful if you could post those everyday scenes if you still have any left.
At the start of the clip you seem to refer to khmer artist Nhek Dim. Are you able to jot down how you got to know him etc..? Much of what is known about this artist is unfortunately hearsay at best with the destruction of cambodia following the spillover of the US war in vietnam.
