- December 3, 2017. More than 5,000 of orange-clad monks joined the Cambodian government for a peace offering ceremony at the western entrance of Angkor Wat temple. The Royal Ballet of Cambodia, accompanied by the Royal Palace's pin peat melodic drumming ensemble, offered a propitiatory dance called Buong Suong (បួងសួង). It is one of the oldest dances in the Khmer classical repertoire. It invokes the spirit of the deceased rulers to bring peace and prosperity to the Kingdom of Cambodia. This was one of the rare opportunities to see the Royal Ballet in a ritual setting.

Le Ballet royal du Cambodge, accompagné de l'ensemble de percussions mélodiques pin peat du Palais royal, a offert une danse propitiatoire appelée Buong Suong (បួងសួង). C'est l'une des plus anciennes danses du répertoire classique khmer. Elle invoque l'esprit des souverains défunts pour qu'ils apportent la paix et la prospérité au Royaume du Cambodge. C'était l'une des rares occasions de voir le Ballet royal dans un cadre rituel.

I think beauty in this dance is what ties all of us humans together. The dancers channel history of a 1000 years , aged yet ageless. Even the darkest of times during the khmer rouge can not extinguish the delicate art form. May it flourish for thousands of years to come

@Jaudsq Ahsihvq As a non-cambodian I'll tell that they haven't. The Thais were still in Southern China when this culture was being developed. The Khmer empire was the major cultural force (like India) which influenced Indo-China.
@@ADIMM0 You are correct. Also, both Cambodian and Thai cultures share some similarities but have their own distinctions and are both beautiful. Thailand managed to avoid the turmoil that Cambodia has endured since the 1970s, but Cambodia is a proud country with a rich traditional culture. Phnom Penh was known as the "pearl of Asia" for a reason.
This is why I love being Cambodian, We are beautiful people.

Out of all traditional dances of the world, Apsara Royal dances are the best of the best! I visited Siem Reap once and hooked. Absolutely beautiful culture and beauties.

@@JashJay Bharatanatyam is the mother of all classical dances. It has a long history, all these dance forms are new and inspired from Bharatnatyam.
I feel so great to see my country's (India's culture) still being peacticed in Cambodia. I visited Angkor Wat two months ago and it was an excellent experience to see the stories of Ramayana on the walls of the Angkor Wat. Namaste to all my Cambodian siblings.

@wrong notes Thanks for the the information, Today of course we mainly believe in Buddhism, the dance above represents our 1200 years ago's culture, and we still practice it today cos it is a big part of our Identity. This hindu dance had existed since before 10th century when buddhism was introduced to Cambodia.

Beautiful, peaceful religion. Hopefully the Cambodians will keep it alive, the Islamisation of Malaysia, Indonesia, Southern Thailand, the way minorities and women are being treated like second class citizens is such contrast to Buddhism which looks for inner peace and enlightenment. Hold onto this and don't dismantle the religious structures of society to give way for nefarious religions and cult like religions

i remember the last time i was there, it was before pandemic. The temple is really really huge and is a sight that really needs to be seen tho, because it is huge its a veeery long way to walk to the back of ankor wat so make sure to bring a lot of water especially that its very hot and as mych as possible, to not get lost.

@@indianlifeculture8008 well actually it was a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Vishnu. His murti is still there. The Cambodians gradually became Buddhist's, but Angkor is originally Hindu, not Buddhist.
