There's a fan remake of Mario Vs. Luigi called Mario Vs. Luigi Online, you can play the game with anyone online and play with up to 10 Players. It even has power ups like the Ice Flower and Propeller Mushroom.
6:01 This actually ended up being the reason Shy Guy would end up becoming my favorite Mario character and by extension my "identity". I played Mario Kart DS a lot in high school but I didn't own the game so I was forced to always play as Shy Guy. His design would end up growing on me.
Quick tips that I gathered from playing this mode: Ground pounds attacks makes your opponent lose 3 stars. You have I-Frames entering and exiting the pipes meaning you can stall your opponent's starman if they are camping at the pipes. There's an upper layer on the pipe stage only accessible by wall jumping using the mini mushroom powerup on the right side. Around 4 coins are located there and you can drop down at the spawnpoints. I don't recommend using your storable item because it cannot reach there. If there's not enough space for a mega mushroom to be used, you'll revert to big mario/luigi and store the mega mushroom in your inventory. Be carefully using this tactic since the audio of the mega mushroom reverting CAN be heard so your opponent can know what just happened as well. The amount of stars affect your 8 coins bonus item odds. I'm not sure the exact numbers but when I play, it's pretty common to see the losing player get a starman or mega mushroom while falling at 4 or more stars behind (I pretty much play exclusively on first to 10 stars games) In the 3 by 3 alcove of the castle that has the bomb and the question mark block, there's enough space to have the bomb explode on one side and keep you safe if you are on the other.
Imma add onto this since I played it a lot as a kid and it's my first video game as well I don't remember there being any sound cue for the Mega Mushroom reverting, if anything, the tell was that you don't here "Here we gooo!/Alright!" with your opponent's footsteps Entering a pipe gives you I-frames, but also pauses the starman, meaning the infamous "pipe gamble" can then begin. You have a few options both as the defender (vulnerable) and the attacker (starman), and it all comes down to the distance between you and them: -As a defender, if they're entering the pipe right behind you, keep the loop going, they either have to leave or see if you'll crack first. It doesn't last indefinitely. If they're further beyond, wait for them to start appearing through the pipe on your screen, then enter the pipe, here's why -As the attacker, if you're too far behind, and you know your opponent while try to re-use the pipe, either try to get a loop going or stay on the pipe without moving at all. The goal is to trick your opponent into entering the pipe at a moment you didn't. The pipe gives you I-frames and you can just hold down on the D-pad to re-enter as much as you want, however there is one or few frames of vulnerability before the game allows you to go back in. So if you trick your opponent and remain on the middle of the pipe, they take damage and lose a star. This is somewhat huge, because then you can give up on the chase and go for the ? block instead, effectively denying a reliable way for your opponent to get a power-up. They might be somewhat desperate and try to make a run for it, which can be even better for you. In that case, don't greed, go steel the power up from the block first, then go for them. If when you entered the pipe you were too close to them, wait a bit before entering the pipe after around 2 to 5 pipe entries (or be sneaky and wait a tiny bit each time), then continue the loop now that you're a bit more late. You probably get where this is going: the goal is to set up a situation similar to the one I described prior, but to work, your opponent really needs to blunder and enter the pipe without checking if you're coming out of it. On the castle level, you can move around at running speed if you repeatedly jump while crouching (and holding the run button obviously) This is very, very useful if you need to chase someone when the ceiling comes down, since you effectively get the size of Small Mario (no power-ups Mario) for the trade-off of nothing (in the context of a chase) There's a well-known "anti-mega mushroom" spot on the ice level, below the Bill Blaster. Go there if the opponent used a Mega Mushroom. If you have a mega mushroom, make sure to be close to that zone when you use it, as well as being between your opponent and the zone, to maximise your chances of landing a hit In the underground level, while using a mega-mushroom, you can jump above the blocks that are above the void below, and avoid death by jumping again as you touch them (which destroys them). The time window is strict, but it's quite useful if you want your opponent to lose a life, especially if they easily manage to keep their distances. Overall a very fun strategy, but I wouldn't recommend it to people that don't have many time spent on the mode yet. The reason why is simple: if you get a mega mushroom, chances are (if you're playing with lives) you have a life deficit compared to your opponent. In that case, losing a life or even just trading can be really bad. But if you have the same number of lives or a life advantage, then definitely go for this, the more you train this strategy the better (iirc) If you stop holding the down button after ground pounding, the g.p will be canceled after the first breakable block you break. For some reasons... doing so while being Koopa Mario/Luigi often makes them do a little jump afterward, I don't know if it's always the case but it usually is. You can use this to destroy blocks that are above a death pit, such as a large part of the underground stage, or the blocks around the ice in the ice level. This doesn't have many applications, but it can definitely end up in a funny moment if you're lucky enough/use the red koopa's shell to your advantage by throwing it, which brings me to the next point (do note that you can also can the g.p at anytime by pressing up) Koopa shells (the throwable ones) are useful projectiles, learn to throw them and at the right spots. These can be above a pit, near obstacles... You want to bait your opponent into jumping (or appear with a shell by surprise as they did so), then throw the shell while they're falling. Try to be relatively close, or else they might use a ground pound to avoid your attack. The shell can also protect you from a fire ball but will disappear if it happens. Use your opponent's peace of mind as they comfortably use their fire flower to your advantage: try to dodge the fireballs, then throw the shell to your opponent when you're close enough. One person can only have two of their fireballs out at all time. In this mode, the whole stage is permanently loaded (from what I understand), so fireballs have to hit something to disappear, meaning the further you are from a wall the better. Starman's full speed is significantly faster than normal while running, but this doesn't apply if the character is using a blue shell, so feel free to just run away in a straight line. In fact, the blue shell is sliiiightly slower than normal running, and the star doesn't change its speed whatsoever. If you have a star while being Fire Mario/Luigi, you can hit your opponent with a fireball and hit them with your starman before their I-frames start. As a result, they will drop two stars total, and lose a power-up/life. Ground-pounding someone makes them lose three stars, yes, but also has significantly higher knockback and longer hitstun (time during the opponent cannot control their character). You can use this to make someone fall into a pit they would've not to with a regular jump (usually making them take the "face-off" with less caution than if they were close enough to the ledge). This can be especially useful on the grass, ice, or castle level, but also applications in the two others (the less obvious one being the pipe level, using this to push someone into a piranha plant, but usually, a regular jump would've made the cut as well) This is all the advance stuff I can recall from memory, maybe I'll make a guide one day, that'd be fun
the mini area isn't only for the mini mushroom, if you're super or fire mario/luigi you can wall-jump off of a pipe and by triple jumping on the left yellow pipe and wall-jumping, you can get there
NSMB VS is probably the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer DS game, I spent hours playing it and your video sums up my thoughts perfectly. I commonly play off DS Download Play which has a load time that isn't the worst thing but afterward does consistent loading times throughout the rest of the game. I wish it returned in later NSMB entries but sadly that's kinda impossible now without awkward screen splitting.

The ice stage was always my favorite. The large size was great because it gave more room for running away which leads to a competition of platforming skill. As for the launch pad, I have had a good number of great moments where I’ve landed right behind somebody after dropping from above, plus air chases are surprisingly tense because of the limited maneuverability. Lastly, that blue koopa is the blueberry on top. Also while I agree that the castle stage is not great, turning on limited lives makes for some close calls that are made even closer by your opponent trying to keep you from escaping death.

They could literally make a game that’s JUST Mario VS Luigi with like more characters and stages, case & point, the Mario VS Luigi online remake & its mods. I would pay good money for a game like this, it would be an absolute blast.
I remember playing this with my brother and it was some of the few times we would genuinely get along, also we would be willing to kill each other arguing over who got to be Luigi
Just go play NSMB Versus, it's a Fan remake of this more adding more stages like Sky and Desert and has more powerups, would recommend giving it a shot
When he was going on about capturing, I thought he was gonna use the online PC remake someone made, which wouldn't be authentic BUT it is the superior way to play these days.
finally somebody talks about this masterpiece, the KING of the schoolyard battlegrounds, just as good as the day I met her I mean played her I mean played it
"You cannot recreate DS Download Play for...fairly obvious reasons" Yeah, but regular wireless play is coming to MelonDS soon, and it'll work over the net, so maybe that won't matter soon?
5:45 yea & also the many mini games they had… that Mario Game is still Goated to this day… I’m just wondering why they never added that all in to any other “New Super Mario Bros” Games or even the direct sequel to this game which is on 3DS the New Super Mario Bros 2 🥲… I lost my ol cartridge of this game of the video here so I can’t really do Mario vs Luigi No More 😅
There's a fan remake of Mario Vs. Luigi called Mario Vs. Luigi Online, you can play the game with anyone online and play with up to 10 Players. It even has power ups like the Ice Flower and Propeller Mushroom.

3: stealing power ups is key in this mode so hover over your opponents and steal their power ups especially if they get a star or mega shroom this becomes especially viable in the brick world
4: ground powneds are incredibly powerful and useful if you hit your opponent with one they lose 3 stars instead of 1 and when near pits are incredibly powerful since it launches them farther than a normal bonk on the head losing 4 stars and a power up if done correctly
5:in the castle mini mushroom and shell are king these are the most power power ups in that world based on the increase viability for movement and destruction if you have the blue shell since you become a ricochet machine
6: if you hit the bomb in the castle stage and are stuck in the tiny space don't worry move it to the other side and move to the opposite side if you hit the bomb giving you optimal space
7: losing your stars in the beginning dosent matter only when enough stars have spawned is their a risk to losing the game and if you ground pound them effectively you will have no trouble dealing with them
8:coin stealing and hoarding is an effective way for the opponent not to get any power ups since if their not able to get coins they can't get power ups and the coins respawn after every star so keep that in mind
9:do don get ground pound as a mini mushroom since you will die and loose all your stars in 1 easy death plus a normal hit counts as a normal ground pound hit so be careful
10:being tiny or small mario(not mini) has its advantages since you have a smaller hit box if you have advance movement capabilities you will be able to travers the map effortlessly making the game feel and be funnier in general
11: learn the movement for each map, the spots, power up locations, hiding, attack points, etc so you can be as optimal as possible. if you say but theirs not much to do movement wise your right but you can blaze through the map if you know how to move and trust as a kid playing this none stop with my brother trust me you can def move crazy in this game
12:crouch jump in castle is your best friend since when standing your hit box is bigger crouch jumping will be the way you move around without dying and barely making it to that one spot you wouldn't without it plus your speed if done correctly isent hindered at all only when touching the ground so spam jump

I used to run Mario vs Luigi tournaments with my cousins, hours of fun man.
This really is one of the modes ever.
Blue Shell is insanely fun, especially in Mario vs. Luigi
Blue Shell is amazing
Just go play NSMB Versus, it's a Fan remake of this more adding more stages like Sky and Desert and has more powerups, would recommend giving it a shot
Ngl I found Dane laughing at the idea of talking about Pokémon more funny than it deserved to be
That's right, I LOVE the Blue Shell.
ive been watching since 20k subs and its so cool seeing you grow
When he was going on about capturing, I thought he was gonna use the online PC remake someone made, which wouldn't be authentic BUT it is the superior way to play these days.
I realllllly wanna know who made that thumbnail art, great video!
The Blue Shell is one of my favorite Power Ups
I think this would of been amazing with a Mario bros stage or something.
I LOOOOVVE the blue shell, deserves more love
Do you draw your thumbnails? The arts really good
Mario vs. Luigi 2: vs. Spike and Stanley Battle Royale
Lore of New Super Mario Bros DS’s CRAZY Vs. Mode momentum 100
i subbed just because you also love the blue shell power-up
and because you seem cool =D
The blue shell has to be the best Mario power up of all time.
finally somebody talks about this masterpiece, the KING of the schoolyard battlegrounds, just as good as the day I met her I mean played her I mean played it
Everyone knows the Nintendo DS actually stands for Dwoodrow Swilson
See kids this was OUR Fortnite
Someone made an online version of this mode. It includes new power ups and stages.
Now all we need is Uncle Dane vs Nephew Dane
I still play Mario vs. Luigi with my friend every so often
video comes out a day after I find a really good pc and browser remake of mario vs luigi and played it all day with my friends lmao
I remember my favourite always used to be the snow map, but thinking back it probably was so a young me could have a higher chance in winning
I love the pure...crystal...blue...shells.
I’m surprised Danerade didn’t talk about the fan remake that allows online play.
New Super Mario Bros so good they rebooted it as Super Mario Wonder
Wow, good of Danerade to buy a DS capture card and immediately destroy it in the video.
FINALLY SOMEONE THAT LOVES THE BLUE SHELL
Mario vs Luigi es el modo principal de New Super Mario Bros.
-Loco Damián
Real ones know the mini mushroom-bullet bill combo
Mini mushroom is underrated maybe not in this mode, but it is a good power up in the main games.
Yes! Somebody actually remembers this exists, thank you Danerade! Also, blue shell supremacy ftw
-Dear danerade
-Make more pvz/angry birds plushie rp video with your friend 😎🙃
THERES A FANMADE ONLINE VERSION FOR 10 PEOPLE WHICH DOES EVERYTHING YOU ASK FOR AND MORE
Honestly if nintendo put just this mode on the switch with online multiplayer i would be so happy
Seeing gameplay of this mode just puts a smile on my face, i used to make my little brother very angry on this
Try recording with a blanket over you and the mic. Works wonders if you don’t have proper sound insulation.
This always looked so cool as a kid but i didn't had any friend to play with
Hey danerade remember that one time we wanted to play monster seeking monster in vc but you didnt trust us with direct messaging?
Good time good oldies? I feel like I’ve heard someone say that before
W vid
As soon as he started talking about emulation I knew what he was talking about. I had the same problem (I wasn’t recording it tho)
I fucking miss the blueshell, metal cap, and hammer suit bruh.
Very well made video
My friend and I played this mode all the time when nsmb came out. Bet I have over 100 hours in it.
"You cannot recreate DS Download Play for...fairly obvious reasons"
Yeah, but regular wireless play is coming to MelonDS soon, and it'll work over the net, so maybe that won't matter soon?
I never played the mario vs Luigi mode.
It looks fun and interesting though.
5:45 yea & also the many mini games they had… that Mario Game is still Goated to this day… I’m just wondering why they never added that all in to any other “New Super Mario Bros” Games or even the direct sequel to this game which is on 3DS the New Super Mario Bros 2 🥲… I lost my ol cartridge of this game of the video here so I can’t really do Mario vs Luigi No More 😅
I love Mario
Have you heard of the online version some fans made? its really good!!!!
2 months? And it still only has 7k views? Guess it was pre-destined to be so.
Best. Versus. Mode. Ever!
This mode made me want a DS as a kid.
Danerade. You do know that Shyguymask is Canadian
Great Video
There is a fan continuation of it on the internet by the way.
