I hate to say this, but Matteo's "Room 335" surpasses that of the original composer. Not only in his tone, speed and attack, but also melodic invention.
So happy to have lived long enough to have been able to hear Matteo's playing.

    • @JoseRamirez-rq2gj

I disagree. While I think this is a pretty good rendition, it lacks the magic and energy due to the absence of the keyboard solo and the reduced speed. Also I can't forgive that they didn't end the song with the right notes and made it less punchy than the original.
      Sorry! 😅

I'm inclined to agree. I played the grooves out of the vinyl when this was first released in 1978, it's one of Larry's masterpieces. But Matteo's version has harmonic subtleties even the original lacks, the execution is flawless, the technique staggering. I would never have believed this possible, but here we are.

As a guitar wannabee from the 60/70s, this has shaken my world. This man has made my Gods sound like children. Such a shame that popular music has no interest in guitarists these days. But guitar lovers, of which we are still here, have taken notice.

This song is one of my favourite guitar songs of all time, one of Larry's masterpieces, and I've spent years learning/trying to play it. If anyone had told me that someone would come along and cover it better than Larry, I would have laughed at them, and hard. Yet that is what Matteo has done, somehow. Impeccable tone, perfect note selection, flawless articulation, he's done what only a handful of great axeman have done i.e Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Shawn Lane. He's taken someone else's classic, and made it his own. Wow. And he's only 26, so we have decades of his genius to look forward to.

Hats off to one of the all time great guitarists Larry Carlton for writing and recording this song in 1978. It was awesome back then and awesome still today. Especially in the hands of this astonishingly skilled and talented young man. I’ve played guitar since I was in the second grade and have never come close to such pure fingering and hand, mind, eye coordination. I have never seen that much pure guitar invested in one human being in my life. Can’t wait to watch his career unfold.

Been watching alot different of the young and upcoming guitarists for years and i havent seen anyone as melodic and diverse as this since Guthrie Govan started to gain fame on the Internet in the mid 2000's. And his right hand style is very unique, almost like classical guitar! Keep up the good work, watching with great hopes and excpectations!
Also cheers to italy for consistently for(atleast) 50 years producing such great caliber of instrumentalists and musicians, especially in prog and fusion

I think you're writing in Japanese, you must have heard Masayoshi Takanaka who is from Japan? This song of Matteo's could fit right into one of his albums!

This is so far the peak of Matteo’s aristry. The technical mastery put to the service of the song, the incredibly mature phrasing, the wonderful melodic sense, the lightning-fast speed of his thinking and the sunny warmth of his temperament. His acoustic instrumental also showcases these qualities (minus the blazing speed). I hope he puts out more music where these qualities are expressed (his recent rocker (Drop D) is great but pales in comparison to what we see here.)

Matteo’s playing is amazing, in many ways I think of him as an extraordinary author with a complete command of language and story telling understanding the nuance of how subplots lend themselves to the greater overall story.
If you actively listen to what Matteo is doing you’ll begin to hear all these small bebop, rock, blues, fusion, etc. guitar lines or licks. Instead of leaning on scales and arpeggios, he’s leaning on small phrases he’s just ingrained into his playing, he’s just fitting together all these different phrases so effortlessly and quickly with his improvisation.
That’s the astounding part of his playing the speed and consistency with which he puts all the small passes together and how they all generally work to complement each other.
In my mind that is what is setting him apart from others. This level of playing is also achievable you just need to listen and copy licks/lines from everything you listen to. Do it long enough as Matteo has and it will come through in your improvisation.
I just can’t get enough, so tasty is his playing.

The drummer's smile when he realized the magic that had happened just before. From 2:11 to 2:30. This guy's talent is that he knows how to master all musical styles, making them much better than the originals. Clearly, the primary creative phase is still missing. Let's give him time.
