      Brandon Henke
      Nope. In some countries the only ID is your passport, there aren't any ID cards and you aren't required to carry your passport.
      More, you aren't required to carry a driving license even if you are driving. You have the right to supply the license within certain period of time (5 days) if police request it.
      That's the difference between a country friendly to its people and the one that isn't.

    It’s not the scams that has ruined Thailand. It’s the fact prices have skyrocketed in places like Phuket. I went 5 times but never again after last time. More expensive than Sydney now. $8 average beer now. $50 on Main Street for 2 people to eat. Even back street food wasn’t cheap anymore

      We use grab a lot during our trip in the Philippines. Very reliable!

    • @phillipsanchez4192
      @phillipsanchez4192 7 років тому +5

      This is particularly true in Phuket! The taxi cohorts here run the rates extremely high compared to the rest of Thailand. Typically, my wife and I drive to the places we are going, but if we are out on the town and will both be drinking, we will use grab. Usually, if you live in a place long enough and make friends with the right people, someone local will know a freelance driver who has reliable rates and can be booked ahead of time. He'll be more expensive than grab, but way less expensive than a street taxi. This is also great in Phuket when you need to get to the airport, as the rates for an airport run can be very expensive depending on who you take. You also usually get to have a nice relationship with someone local you trust and can feel good about supporting him with your business whenever you need to book a driver. The key thing in the hot tourist destinations in Thailand is to NOT get caught driving or riding drunk, which can be a very loose percentage of blood-alcohol level. The police crackdown in Phuket has been upped in recent months, for tourists and locals. If you are caught riding or driving drunk (a swab test or even breathalisers these days), you are looking at 10,000 - 20,000 Baht to avoid spending the night in jail. You shouldn't be drinking and driving anyway, so a little planning goes a long way...

    Great little video. First time I went to Pattaya I got hit hard with the jet ski rental scam. My daughter had allegedly caused damage, but in reality she hadn't crashed into anything. This quickly turned into a very hostile beach-front confrontation, with more and more criminal-eyed locals gathering by the second. I didn't want to get my family into a violent (potentially deadly) situation, so I eventually yielded and coughed up the 2000 baht 'damage fee.' (But the second time I went there, several wonderful local people saved my life when I was literally dying of sepsis. And the doctor was awesome. Saved my life). So, yes, there are a lot of scammers, but also a lot great people with hearts of gold, as well).
    But when it comes to jet skis, if you want to do that stuff in Pattaya, you would do well to wait until you get back home (wherever that may be). Because jet-skiing there is not known to have good outcomes. Really bad scene!

    • @twelvmnkys
      @twelvmnkys 6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the reply. The jet ski incident was the only scam that's befallen me in Thailand. I've been to Thailand (from far south to far north & almost everything in between) more times than I can count, over the years. Main reason is learning Muay Thai. Also some family vacations (It's a mere 2.5 hr flight from where I live). In none of those places was I ever scammed. Street-smartness is very important. Also there's something that in the military they call "bearing." It has to do with how you conduct and carry yourself.
      What I'm about to write can cut down peoples' chances of getting scammed (or robbed, etc.) greatly: Carry yourself with confidence. Good posture, shoulders back. Walk like a boss. Walk like a U.S. Marine. Maintain total confidence in your eyes. This doesn't necessarily mean a hostile look. A totally confident, yet relaxed look is the best. Even in a totally new place, make yourself feel (pretend and act accordingly) that, "I own this neighborhood." There have been times (in Korea, India and Thailand) when I was totally lost. I put on this attitude, this "bearing," and nobody ever tried to scam or harm me in any way. People worldwide are very good at reading all these sorts of non-verbal messages. Giving out the wrong messages will inevitably bring on the scammers, or even worse.
      As for avoiding honey trap scams, that's really easy. When a bar girl or massage girl invites you in, smile and say in a very friendly way, "No thank you, khap. My wife makes me very happy." And just keep walking on. (Even if you don't have a wife, the bar girl doesn't know that.)

      mike allen I knew a older guy who did that. He planned on retiring down there. He was wiring money to this sexy chick he met down there. Sent over $10,000 he told me. I don't know how much it costs to build a house there but he had a home here in the US too.
      His friend would tell me that she's playing him but he doesn't want to listen. He told me that she told him to never come down there without telling her. That was suspicious to me & I told him that. Anyway, he retired & went down there without telling her. She knew when he planned his retirement. She was nowhere to be found once he got there.
      He overstayed his visa looking for her I guess & ended up losing his home here in the US doing it. So he moved in with a friend in his basement. One day on my way to work, our mutual friend had told me that he died.
      I asled how?? Well, he trip down the stairs to the basement. Shit is sad. Retires, gets scammed out of $10,000 plus, gets scammed out of love, loses his home & breaks his neck falling down stairs at a friend house.

      Don't listen to this guy. I spent 2 months in se Asia, 4 countries. And I gave over my passport about 15 times. By the end of my trip I still had it. Don't be fuckin stupid, make sure the people you are giving it to are safe and reliable. Such as a hostel, or getting a visa at a border. But if someone asks for your passport for something stupid like a boat ride, deny that immediately. And as for photocopying it, that is much much worse then handing it over to someone

    Not a scam as such but one thing that upsets and annoys many visitors is discriminatory pricing or dual pricing, where tourists are charged much more than locals for entry to attractions. This can happen with government owned or privately owned attractions. Often the entry price is displayed in English, and written in Thai script would be a much lower price for locals.
    However unjustified you may feel this is, just forget about it, don't let it bother you. If the the asking price is too high, then give it a miss. Most of the time though, the higher farang price isn't that high, certainly not compared to tourist attractions in a lot of other countries. Just enjoy yourself and don't worry about a few $$.

    • @TakyoTravel
      @TakyoTravel  6 років тому +2

      Very well said there! There is a lot of discus to the dual price, but in the end, compare with our western country, we often pay way higher and not blink an eye. Thx for dropping by our channel and have a wonderful coming weekend!

    • @cua7180

      It's a common practice in most tourist areas in developing country. I think for cultural heritage places I think it is ok n fair. Since the management need fund to run or preserve the area but if they set a high price, the locals will not be able to afford it (as it was cultural heritage sites, locals need to be able to come and visit those places). Hence they collect more from foreigners. But I against this practice for some non cultural heritage sites, such as entertainment park or resorts.

    Another handy tip when you arrive at the Airport entering Thailand, is to go upstairs to departure. If you grab a taxi as he's dropping of passengers it will avoid all the lines and he'll be wrapped he doesn't have to line up. Then name a price and he'll stick to it. Do not go untill you do. I've gone down the road and he tells you. Meter broken. Yer right mate, They have a hidden switch. Then he'll give you a high price. If he refuses to budge then tell him to stop the taxi and you get out. Simple. There will be another dozen in minutes. By this time your out of the airport. Also leave your someone in the taxi as you get your bags, otherwise he might drive of with them. And always have your main bag with valuables passport etc with you not in the boot. Same with bus trips. Sit on the footpath side so when the buss stops you can keep an eye on someone pinching your bag out from under the bus storage. If you take a train trip book the bottom bunk. Have fun. I have spent years in Thailand and I loved it. Friendliest people on earth, just don't upset them. JD

      Really? And you didn't have any problems with immigration?
      I had a terrible experience while TRYING TO ENTER Thailand. Got denied entry, because it was my third trip to Thailand this year. Immigration officer said I HAVE BEEN HERE TO MANY TIMES! Got detained at the airport for 48h and had to buy ticket to back to the UK :/
      There were about 15 people in the detention room with me. No shower, couldn't change clothes after 12 hours filght, nightmare!
      I will never come back to Thailand and wil be scared even to have layover at Bangkok airport!

    I have gone once in my life and it was nov 2019. 50 bht for pants outside, but 200 bht inside after going through the long line. More of a scam inside than out.

    Thank you for your advice. This is information not typically offered among American or English expat videos. • @phillipsanchez4192
      @phillipsanchez4192 7 років тому +3

      Sorry for all the side comments, Takyo. Can't sleep tonight and I like your helpful video... My advice for anyone who plans on riding in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos is to bring your own helmet, preferably one manufactured in Australia, the UK, or the US. I mean no disrespect to any of these countries, but helmets are not made to the same standard as they are in the west. The "eggshell" helmets that often accompany rentals or even with a local rider you might use in Bangkok for example so that you can skip through traffic just aren't safe by comparison. I know it is a major hassle to have to haul a helmet around on a holiday, especially with flights and the rest, but I can't stress the importance of this enough, especially if your holiday is going to have you on the road for a significant amount of time. Travel safely, everyone.

    • @TakyoTravel
      @TakyoTravel  7 років тому +1

      Don't be sorry for the side comment lol! Is a very interesting idea that you brought. I never thought of bringing my own helmet. But it's so true what you said. The helmet standard in asia are not comparable to western standard. It can really ruin your vacation. If the person is not experimented, the motorbike is not recommended. Better spend a little more on taxi then emergency hospital ;)!

    • @TakyoTravel

      what?? thanks for the update. Do they charge for it now or do they just let you go in whatever you're wearing?

    • @capio78
      @capio78 7 років тому +1

      No, they do not have clothes, so if you're not dressed appropriately you don't get in, simple as that. They are now VERY strict. This is a recent change. Previously like you said I loaned clothes and you could get into the entrance part of the palace and either change your clothes or loan their clothes, now you can't even get in the first gate. Also there is nowhere outside you can change, there are no toilets outside you can use unless you eat in one of the restaurants. So come fully covered or you won't be allowed to enter.

    • @phillipsanchez4192
      @phillipsanchez4192 7 років тому

      That might vary on location, actually. I live in Phuket and had some Aussie friends come and stay with us a few days. Later I drove them to a place they booked on AIRBNB that was nearer the beach (at least I think it was AirBNB), and they'd booked for 10 days or something like that.

    • @asiaexpat62
      @asiaexpat62 7 років тому

      Anyone renting for less than 30 days must obtain a hotel license which is very difficult. Most AIRBNB in Thailand are operating outside the law and subject to criminal action. Renters could be evicted without compensation since AIRBNB requires them to follow all laws.

    I've backpacked through over 90 countries since 1968. I'm a traveler not a tourist and locals seem to know the difference. I recognize scams and seldom ran across them myself, but I've seen tourists get ripped off everywhere from being charged 10X more for a taxi to 300% markups on food. Tourists stand out. They seem to advertise themselves as being willing to pay more for stuff. I don't know why that is. I can live on $15 a day in Asia, including lodging, but tourists are willing to spend hundreds. Same in Central and South America. I learn the money 1st thing. I use Lonely Planet as my guide and talk to other travelers. Travelers tend to melt into the local scene. We don't take many photos, we eat what and where the locals eat, we stay with families, not hotels, we don't wear "tourist clothes", and we don't take guided tours. I've been in a jade store where the owner told me to "come back in two hours" because he was changing price tags for two tourist buses coming through. He was raising prices. Later, he have me a hand-made doll for free that he sold to tourists for $10. I've seen the same in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Mid-East, and the Pacific Islands. I saw a famiy of four on Moorea charged $170 for a breakfast at a tourist restaurant that only cost me $2.75 down the street at a food truck, and better food. I don't see the scamming in North America. Well, $40 for a tee shirt on the Santa Cruz pier that sells for $15 on Amazon, but the price is $40 to locals too. If you want to know a country, get away from the tourists. They travel in a caricature.

    I have been to Thailand many times and to all of these places. This review of Thai culture is wildly overly harsh. Taxis are the most dis-honnest people in every culture. If you spend a lot of time in Thailand you will get a more accurate idea of Thailand. I travel a lot and I find Japanese culture to be the most honest, quickly followed by Swiss and then Thai culture. They are among the most honest people and kindest culture you can hope for. Question the taxi drivers. If you don't think one is honest. Try another. If the next three taxi drivers wont give you the meter rate because it is friday night and the rates are not the same as in the day time and less premium times. Good luck finding a taxi that will give you meter rates. You will be there all night. Big part of the problem with this review is that it is done with thick probably American goggles. I have been in situations were people gave me a ride two hours out of their way just to be kind not wanting any money. In rural areas truck drivers returning home with their company trucks routinely pick people up for free and pick up spots that the thai people know about. I rode for over an hour in the back of the truck once this way. If you did not get change correctly it is much more likely that the person did not have correct change a common problem and they hoped you would not be bothered for a small amount and did not want to create a disruption. I have been drunk on the beach in this same Island passed out in the chair. The thai people did not want to wake me for me to pay my bill. They let me slide until someone was able to let me know I did not pay my bill yet in the morning. That is Thai Culture!!!! Not this wildly skewed there are scammers everywhere version. In about 1% of Thailand in the most tourist filled or should I say mobbed places you may see some of this treatment. Thai people have a strong sense of honor and honesty very similar to Japanese. (This comes from a person ashamed to admit he is American when he travels). Consider the words of the video but balance them against my words to get a more accurate view of thailand if you plan to visit there. I have been to Thailand dozens of times. The only issues I have ever had were with miss translation problems and taxi drivers. They also have some of the nicest and most considerate and honest taxi drivers too. But about one in three I would rate less than honest or desirable.

      Good luck bro, I just got home from my first trip to Thailand ever and I was also going solo. I was in northern part of Thailand, riding motorcycle between the cities and up in the mountains. Amazing, everyone is so nice, even to foreigners in this area, not like in phuket or bangkok. i had no scams up there, everyone was super friendly. but i warn u, this is not the case in bangkok, atleast not the airport. good advice from the video, fix ur flights before u leave home and make sure u have atleast a couple of hours if u land in bangkok first to catch another flight. i missed my flight from bangkok to chiang mai because i had to do some tourist visa shit which took alot of time and i had to run all around the airport with thai people in suits trying to scam me, and eventually i had to accept being scammed and buy his damn ticket, if i didn't i would have died in that airport haha.
      and bring condoms, trust me u could meet a partner from out of nowhere, just like me. its not a good feeling to come home and have a doctor checking u for HIV lol.

      skaneasd thanks for advice.. I’m planning to spend my 1week holiday in Bangkok and Pattaya. You think solo woman round around in Bangkok is safe or should I drag my friend to accompany me? 😂😂😂 I just thinking now if safe to explore Bangkok for a solo woman like me 😁

    • @Pulkadrage
      @Pulkadrage 6 років тому +1

      yza Resquir If it's anything like Chiang mai then yeah I think it's safe, but if its late all the weird and creepy people (mostly tourists in my experience) start to come out but I don't think u need a friend to survive 😂 It could get lonely though, I missed having someone to talk to when I was alone in the mountains but hopefully u will meet a lot of new friends, many tourists as well as Thai are wonderful people just enjoying the beautiful country and its sights

    Dude, you shouldn't be riding a motorbike in Thailand without a helmet. Actually, you shouldn't do that anywhere. Really great advice otherwise. Local Thais are wonderful and friendly, and all they ever ask is that you treat them in a kind way and with respect. I love living here. My Mexican side loves the spicy food!

    • @TakyoTravel
      @TakyoTravel  7 років тому +3

      I can agree more than that! An accident can really ruin your holydays. Plus no need to talk about the problem with law enforcement. Your comment is very true and I only wish more farang would understand this and go over the scammers and meet these beautiful people, and OMG their cuisine is so delicious!

    • @phillipsanchez4192
      @phillipsanchez4192 7 років тому +4

      From the numbers that come out of the tourism bureau every year, millions of people from over over the world overlook rumours of scams and come to Thailand anyway.
      This is an amazing place, but like all places you have to use common sense and be respectful of the people. The Thais will return your good nature for sure.

    Walk bus or train...never take a taxi or hire a scooter motorbike or jetski

    • @nixworld767
      @nixworld767 7 років тому +9

      Don't take a taxi? The last thing I'm doing after i arrive at the Bangkok airport at 11:00 pm is walking or taking a bus or train to my hotel. I have never, ever, had an issue with a metered taxi at the airport. (There, avoid the touts who approach you offering rides. Scammers). But locate the metered, city taxis on the ground floor. Check in with the starting desk with destination. Then go. Incredibly affordable and honest. Yes, make sure the meter is running. I even take taxis from Bangkok to Pattaya. Ill stop one on the street, negotiate to equivalent of $30 or $35 US, tip him about 200 baht beyond that when we arrive, and its never been a problem. Ill even ask him to stop at a convenience store, buy myself a beer and him a water or soft drink....and its an enjoyable afternoon.

    Aw that lady in white at the end!:) I haven't visited Thailand since I was very young so I don't really remember. I'm adopted from Thailand but I was less than 3 months old. I hear from a lot of other Danes that they kind of know that they're being scammed but they justify it to themselves by saying that it's still cheaper for x amounts of weeks in Thailand than the same amounts of weeks just living normally in Denmark. I appreciate your advice though.
    I'm not big on destinations that are too touristy, but of course I have to see Bangkok since that's where I was born - according to my birth certificate.
