Winter can be bleak and dark. There are of course good family times, and there's a lot of fun you can do in the snow. But often cold dark mornings. Even when no snow on the ground, the roads may be covered by a dusting of salt (used to prevent icing), which makes things look barren. This is a sad story of a young couple making a tough decision, and having it break them. He felt she was drowning him, and in the end they both know it's over.
If it's the right kind of snow, it's a lot of fun to jump into. There was a viral trend a few years ago where Canadians were jumping into the snow with their bathing suits and "swimming".
You were on the right track mentioning a hospital visit, but it's not a disease... it's a pregnancy... that she (or they) decided to end. When he said "It's not me you're dying for," he's talking to the unborn child. It seems that nobody else in these comments wanted to say it outright, for some reason. When you have that event in your mind from the start, the rest of the lyrics make a lot more sense. I appreciated your thoughtful analysis, though. Well done.
Thanks for the reaction, Nihindu and for the request, Jimmie! Love this album. There is an artist with a similar style you guys might enjoy checking out. >> Gabe Dixon Band, More Than It Would Seem: ua-cam.com/video/HyVx3WXxqn8/v-deo.html Cheers!
Oh to have never experienced winter! I would love that! It is cold and bleak, but it makes you appreciate spring and summer all the more! I never knew exactly what this song was about until I read an article about it. If you google the meaning you can find it. I'm afraid using a certain word would get my comment deleted by the youtube bots.
Winter in mythology and in symbolism always mean Death or things like plants die. Spring is Life or beginning of things.....Winter symbolizes the completion or Ending of things!!! FYI
For crying out loud the song is about abortion and you talked right over the part where he says "can't you see it's not me you're dieing for". You spent all this time talking about winter... that's not the point.

Oh i see thank you my friend
It's an autobiographical song when Ben Folds and a girlfriend were teenagers and chose to get an abortion in secret.
For crying out loud the song is about abortion and you talked right over the part where he says "can't you see it's not me you're dieing for". You spent all this time talking about winter... that's not the point.
