Honestly, biggest reason why i just drop pokemon showdown a lot and didn't bother touching MHW's online until Kulve Taroth rolled up... which is funny because i ran into those toxic people way less during my MH4U days...
Funny glitches are ok. The game breaking ones or the ones that ruin a certain part of a game are just cruel. Fallout 4 comes to mind. I had to start three games to complete everything just once because it kept glitching out. Finally got a game that didn't glitch at all, experienced the ending and felt even madder, lol.
Most Bethesda games are so bugged that they were mostly broken on release... remember the nightmare that was Fallout 3? I had to download so many patches and updates just to get it to load past the Bethesda logo 😂
As do I, at least for games you buy physical copies of, but then again, that's why they got rid of those in the first place. So many people nowadays don't bother with the tutorial or reading the manual to begin with and have no fucking idea. And on YT seeing that is infuriating.
I agree with Tom, it depends on the game. If you're playing any sort of competitive game, it makes sense to min-max. Whether it's speedrunning, an eSports game, a tactical game, etc., you want to make sure you're optimizing your numbers. What sucks is when you get your Min-Max players in games like D&D, where the point of the game is to have a good time with friends through all aspects of the game, and not just through rolling dice.
That's actually a perk of 5e. While it's still possible to optimize the gap between an optimized and unoptimized character has probably never been smaller- at least not for years. Meanwhile back in 2e if someone had min-maxed and you were just playing for fun and you went PVP? It could be 100% possible that you wouldn't be able to do anything at all to them in terms of locating/hitting/damaging them and meanwhile they could destroy you in a single round.
Yeah. I mean, playing a low stat, low HP, weak character may be annoying for some. But in other less combat orientated games it can be super fun! At least, that has been my experience with my... *counts* One in-progress campaign I'm playing.
I hate games like yugioh where everyone uses the same OP deck with no variety what so ever. I don't understand playing a game like yugioh and choosing not to take the time and effort to make your vary own deck, but to take someone else hard work, that kind of stuff takes the fun out of it for me. When I played in person my step brother gave me his deck, I played it for awhile but eventually I put cards in and took cards out to make it my own.

At the time everyone used this XYZ(the black space shit) deck, if they went first you wouldn't be able to play any card as they would be able to destroy it, and if they went second they won. It was the most annoying thing I've experienced in a long time lol. The game gives you every card so you couldn't say you cant afford to experiment, but everyone ran the same deck.
As a fellow WoW classic player chilled, I know what your talking about with the min/max crap. My advice, go to a lower pop server. The higher pop servers are filled with elitist players that drown out the people enjoying the game across the board. I noticed in Classic the lower the server pop the more it's like vanilla in terms of community. Yes people are aware about the min/max and do talk about that stuff. "ROFL 4 Frost Mage AoE build for lvl 30 dungeons. Here's how you solo farm ZF and power level blah blah blah etc." but most people on the lower pop servers don't give a shit about it and just play the game and don't really care that they are perfect about it or not.

I mean I wasn’t trying to hit Tom specifically, just anyone behind me, preferably anyone on the red team with those shells. The Bob-omb was dropped such that unless anyone was close to the person who got caught in the blast, it wouldn’t have mattered short of them losing some coins; their positions would’ve been locked.

From my experience, people who need to max out on games are pretty trash(skill wise) For example Destiny 1 had people demanding gjallorhorn for raids but i never used mine and rarely saw people do more dps than me

8:55 I mean...KINDA TECHNICALLY Persona 5 Royal's DLC is kinda pay-to-win. You get the persona's from past Persona games. They're like level 50 and above. I do think they're supposed to be the "final forms" of the Personas. Like they're great for like the first couple of palaces, but you eventually just move on to better Personas.
The Pokemon conversation is completely off based. Pokemon, by it's very nature, is mainly a single-player game. You absolutely don't need to min-max to play through the main storyline, and I've never really known anyone who did. All the min-maxing occurs after that when you plan to battle other players online. The main problem with Pokemon these days is the failure of the company to realize that much of the core audience has grown up. They refuse to put anything even remotely difficult in the game. The constant hand-holding is just infuriating, and takes what could be a pleasure experience and slaps training wheels on it. The "gimmick" feature of the games has been really bad as well. I was okay with megas when they limited it to mons that were absolute trash and needed help, but the absolute unnecessary cash-grabs and blatant catering that occurred after that was worrying. Let's not even mention the whole meta-ruining mess that is Z-Moves and Dynamax. They are basically turning into EA Sports... Make a new concept for your games and abandon it 1-2 games later for a new shiny toy in the hopes it will distract people enough to not see the real problems.
They're mainly talking about competitive, anyways. Pokemon is already too easy without Min-maxing. The only time I'd see min-maxing being semi-necessary is in Gen 3-5 for the single-player story.
In original WoW just* b4 burning crusade in dun morgoh, i was a 28 ( whenever u got 2nd bubble) scaled the mountains south climbing mountain farming, found a hollow spot in the invisible wall to searing gorge, popped 1 bubble just b4 i hit some lava, ran til it was out and popped the 2nd to just make it to land and avoided all pulls since i was so low for the area, and got the nearest flight point. Gm poofed by and questioned how i got their and showed everything. Was given a decent tabard, a expensive shirt, removed the flight point and tpd me to ironforge. It was patched week after..... and i didnt kno bout that douche demon event at the time that went city to city wreaking shit killing everyone in his path

I think that's just a jest from him, what he really hates are min-max gate keepers that ruins the fun for everyone, particularly for mmo i guess where it's very community oriented.
My favourite glitch/exploit in a game that I discovered was in Oblivion. In jail, you could still cast spells. If you summon an imp, and hit it enough times, it becomes hostile to you, and attacks you. The guards then run into the cell, open the door, and kill the imp. And thus, you're free to walk out.
I definitely get into spreadsheets(I love the data and best routes) and look up min-maxing, but whether I do it? I /could/ be a mage/sorcerer or a stealth archer with specific perks, level up timings, and all these things to get the best character... but that isn't my play style. I do min-max my favorite play style, which is two-handed/no shield melee with tons of physical defense, heals, and buffs(usually due to a healing ally, I always need one in a group). But that's enjoyable to me because I like playing with my melee characters, and offensive magics and long range or stealth is... I struggle with it. Like, I can so do it. I have, but I'm a charge in, get in their face, and crush them person. If long range is involved I have to adapt my play style and I go from aggressive to tactical and reticent. I sit in the back and do nothing. I go from full on attacker/tank with defense buffs to a support/heal class whose main job is looting. And it is not fun at all. Can't play PubG because I hide in houses and struggle in battle with long ranged things. I can't snipe well, so I main shotguns and burst guns like the M16. If given an archer I sneak around and shoot people off buildings, but the second they attack I charge in like an idiot cause that's just my default. Now my ideal group of players is: 1 Warrior(me, the initial attacker and damage tank) 1 Specialized healer and buffer(the base of the group) 1 Magic offensive(the enemy finisher) 1 Archer or Shield melee(support class)
People have been min-maxing in Pokemon since Gen III, EV training with Power Items, breeding for Perfect IVs until Hyper Training let you perfect them in gen VII, breeding for a beneficial nature until the nature mints came out in Gen VIII. And you don't need spreadsheets for Pokemon because you can use Smogon and Pokemon Showdown to plan your teams out instead! It's not difficult.

Tom, the back of the box shows you can stack both Sonic 2 and 3 on Sonic & Knuckles and even the booklet says Knuckles in Sonic 2. Just lock Sonic 2 on top of Sonic & Knuckles. Also stacking Sonic 1 onto Sonic & Knuckles gives you millions of blue spheres levels.
Yes min/maxing is bullshit! It's like they say here's this game with all these cools ass armors/weapons/play styles but you can't wear any of them because it's required that wear this particular armor and use this particular weapon with these particular skills to beat it. They took the joy out of games. It's why I've come to hate JRPGs, not only that but they all have that bullshit boss that you over leveled for days to do just to have it one shot you because difficulty spike.
I used to be a hanzon main on overwatch (even though i hated the game, i only played it with friends) just because i was really good and it pissed people off. Then i start playing with a friend of a friend that used to hate OW, but started to get into it. This dude sent me his spreadsheet that he made on what characters should be played against other characters. Including damage potentials, movement, skillsets. All that noise. But then he added, "you stay hanzo and have everyone conform around you". Haven't played OW since.
The minimax convo is how I feel about minecraft servers. People are soooo worried about having max levels and baltop and I'm just over there like, I just like digging and building lol
Crackdown 1 and 2 was fun and crackdown 3 was sluggish and seemed very unfinished and rushed I absolutely hate it the online was worse it was miniguns and rpgs and you had to even download the Multiplayer and Singleplayer separately. The game was just not fun the story mode was just so bad I couldn’t play it for more than an hour the driving was horrible there wasn’t even sprinting in the game I hate it hate it hate it. I waited like 10 years for it to release and I stopped playing after it was released

You can beat OOT from the Deku tree. TONS of glitches and shortcuts including permanent death in MarioKart 64 Beating Mario 64 with 16 stars total Swing set glitch GTA4 Falling to your death 5 inches off the ground in Left 4 Dead I can name MANY others lol
One of my favorite exploits is in Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion, where you can stack Chameleon enchantments. If you enchant your helmet, cuirass, gauntlets, grieves, necklace, and ring with a low level chameleon enchantment (about 18-20%), that stacks, giving you 108-120% chameleon, rendering you completely invisible. It's cheesing the game, but I was a first time player and scared of dying in game.
Min-maxing... yeah it really sucks depending on the game, it's made even worse when the game has no balancing whatsoever, like DMO(Digimon Masters Online), seriously, there's one big roster of digimon to get in the game... yet... only a handful of them are actually worth a damn, not to mention that every big raid in the game needs you to min-max, be lvl 99 with both Tamer and digimon and you MUST grind your fucking ass off to buy overpriced recovery items from other players. Seriously, this game is so unbalanced that the Defense star in that game is completely fucking worthless and the one digimon who's focus would be to be a tank has a very small defense, which, by the way, is the one stat you can't artificially raise through cloning, so the only digimons with a defense worth a damn are literally fusions which means you gotta min-max 2 mons but BE CAREFUL, because, if i'm not mistaken, only one of them can be lvl 99. And don't get me started on the bot problems... Jesus christ... that's a beast of it's own...
I get what you are saying chilled. I played a game called YGOPRO, it was a yugioh game where you have access to all cards, so you can make any deck you want. I loved the game but people had to variety, i had a dragon, machines, warrior decks ect... but everyone ran the same deck which was some XYZ deck. That deck was able to win on its first turn nearly every time. And if you survive more the. One round, no matter what monster you play, no matter what spell, trap, special effects you play they can negate it and destroy it. It killed the game for me and took the fun out of what yugioh was, have not played the game since.
Okay I am not very far into the video but I would like to but my two cents in on the broad topic of min maxing. Not just in Nintendo games but games as a whole. From a few different video essays on game development there is a quote from a gentleman who's name escapes me at the moment that says "given the opportunity players will optimize the way they have fun". Now this is in regards to players exploiting glitches but I believe the premise still applies. Every game has was to optimize how you play for the most benefits, what trades to make in monopoly IV and EV breeding in pokemon trying your hand at selling turnips in animal crossing and finding islands with the highest price etc. But at the end of the day I believe it is truly up to the player to make the decision on how deep into the rabbit hole they go. A personal example is how me and a friend play stardew, for me I wake up each day in game water my crops and determine the rest of the day based on needs for either relationships, or community center bundles or just what I feel like doing in that moment. Where as my friend dosen't talk to npc's he dosen't need to he has very specific crops and layouts that he uses to ensure that he can aquire as much money as possible. And for him that was fun and for me my way was fun. So I believe that min maxing is not an issue unless you make it an issue, there are millions of games to play and millions of ways to play them. So just enjoy games the way you want to enjoy them and don't bash others for doing things differently. Games are meant to be shared not gatekeeped. Any way that's my rant I doubt anyone will read this whole thing but if you do have a good day and stay safe
min-maxing is in essence taking all of a stat and maximizing it as much as possible. In Pokemon, min-maxing would refer to IVs (Trying to role for the best possible IVs so that you can overall get more damage out of it). In other games like, say, Path of Exile, it is when you grind a certain weapon to the point where you get the absolute best roles on modifiers and stats. For some, being even 1 point of attack, health, etc. is not good enough and they will keep grinding it out until they get the best possible.
See, I think Sea of Thieves could benefit from having people being able to team up and make group like guilds in MMOs. It could really help in creating situations where if a ship is an ally they can chat and board one another’s ship if they wanted to, or if they are an enemy the group put a hit on, then they could go out and hunt people and it might even give you some rewards in the process. Just need to report into a town to see any messages from these groups to see what’s been going on.

The Pokemon talk really made me realize how the game became like this recently. The joy of just playing through the story might have been lost due to some player's overly competitiveness.
The real problem is probably just be the vast number of Pokemon out there. Imagine a game with all 1000+ was it now? Of course there's gonna be a major powercreep, because for Gamefreak to actually make every Pokemon unique would be way more work than they deem worth.

I only play Pokemon Soul Silver on my phone now. Haven't really enjoyed a Pokemon game since.

You absolutely don't need to min-max to play through the main storyline, and I've never really known anyone who did. All the min-maxing occurs after that when you plan to battle other players online. The main problem with Pokemon these days is the failure of the company to realize that much of the core audience has grown up. They refuse to put anything even remotely difficult in the game. The constant hand-holding is just infuriating, and takes what could be a pleasure experience and slaps training wheels on it. The "gimmick" feature of the games has been really bad as well. I was okay with megas when they limited it to mons that were absolute trash and needed help, but the absolute unnecessary cash-grabs and blatant catering that occurred after that was worrying. Let's not even mention the whole meta-ruining mess that is Z-Moves and Dynamax. They are basically turning into EA Sports... Make a new concept for your games and abandon it 1-2 games later for a new shiny toy in the hopes it will distract people enough to not see the real problems.
They're mainly talking about competitive, anyways. Pokemon is already too easy without Min-maxing. The only time I'd see min-maxing being semi-necessary is in Gen 3-5 for the single-player story.

In original WoW just* b4 burning crusade in dun morgoh, i was a 28 ( whenever u got 2nd bubble) scaled the mountains south climbing mountain farming, found a hollow spot in the invisible wall to searing gorge, popped 1 bubble just b4 i hit some lava, ran til it was out and popped the 2nd to just make it to land and avoided all pulls since i was so low for the area, and got the nearest flight point.
Gm poofed by and questioned how i got their and showed everything. Was given a decent tabard, a expensive shirt, removed the flight point and tpd me to ironforge. It was patched week after..... and i didnt kno bout that douche demon event at the time that went city to city wreaking shit killing everyone in his path

Chilled, the very idea of "casual gaming" is not to min-max, just to have fun. The minute someone who just games casually min-maxes they are no longer a 'casual'
I think that's just a jest from him, what he really hates are min-max gate keepers that ruins the fun for everyone, particularly for mmo i guess where it's very community oriented.
The main thing i wish sea of thieves had is actual progression.
My favourite glitch/exploit in a game that I discovered was in Oblivion. In jail, you could still cast spells. If you summon an imp, and hit it enough times, it becomes hostile to you, and attacks you. The guards then run into the cell, open the door, and kill the imp. And thus, you're free to walk out.
I definitely get into spreadsheets(I love the data and best routes) and look up min-maxing, but whether I do it? I /could/ be a mage/sorcerer or a stealth archer with specific perks, level up timings, and all these things to get the best character... but that isn't my play style.
I do min-max my favorite play style, which is two-handed/no shield melee with tons of physical defense, heals, and buffs(usually due to a healing ally, I always need one in a group). But that's enjoyable to me because I like playing with my melee characters, and offensive magics and long range or stealth is... I struggle with it. Like, I can so do it. I have, but I'm a charge in, get in their face, and crush them person. If long range is involved I have to adapt my play style and I go from aggressive to tactical and reticent. I sit in the back and do nothing. I go from full on attacker/tank with defense buffs to a support/heal class whose main job is looting. And it is not fun at all.
Can't play PubG because I hide in houses and struggle in battle with long ranged things. I can't snipe well, so I main shotguns and burst guns like the M16. If given an archer I sneak around and shoot people off buildings, but the second they attack I charge in like an idiot cause that's just my default.
Now my ideal group of players is:
1 Warrior(me, the initial attacker and damage tank)
1 Specialized healer and buffer(the base of the group)
1 Magic offensive(the enemy finisher)
1 Archer or Shield melee(support class)
People have been min-maxing in Pokemon since Gen III, EV training with Power Items, breeding for Perfect IVs until Hyper Training let you perfect them in gen VII, breeding for a beneficial nature until the nature mints came out in Gen VIII.
And you don't need spreadsheets for Pokemon because you can use Smogon and Pokemon Showdown to plan your teams out instead! It's not difficult.
speaking of older games and bugs.....for anyone revisiting this video..or just watching it now...who remembers brink/2? i remember watching videos on brink 2 and i remember it being the most buggy,broken game. now THAT makes me feel old.
Tom, the back of the box shows you can stack both Sonic 2 and 3 on Sonic & Knuckles and even the booklet says Knuckles in Sonic 2. Just lock Sonic 2 on top of Sonic & Knuckles. Also stacking Sonic 1 onto Sonic & Knuckles gives you millions of blue spheres levels.
Yes min/maxing is bullshit! It's like they say here's this game with all these cools ass armors/weapons/play styles but you can't wear any of them because it's required that wear this particular armor and use this particular weapon with these particular skills to beat it. They took the joy out of games. It's why I've come to hate JRPGs, not only that but they all have that bullshit boss that you over leveled for days to do just to have it one shot you because difficulty spike.
I used to be a hanzon main on overwatch (even though i hated the game, i only played it with friends) just because i was really good and it pissed people off. Then i start playing with a friend of a friend that used to hate OW, but started to get into it. This dude sent me his spreadsheet that he made on what characters should be played against other characters. Including damage potentials, movement, skillsets. All that noise. But then he added, "you stay hanzo and have everyone conform around you". Haven't played OW since.
The minimax convo is how I feel about minecraft servers. People are soooo worried about having max levels and baltop and I'm just over there like, I just like digging and building lol

Crackdown 1 and 2 was fun and crackdown 3 was sluggish and seemed very unfinished and rushed I absolutely hate it the online was worse it was miniguns and rpgs and you had to even download the Multiplayer and Singleplayer separately. The game was just not fun the story mode was just so bad I couldn’t play it for more than an hour the driving was horrible there wasn’t even sprinting in the game I hate it hate it hate it. I waited like 10 years for it to release and I stopped playing after it was released

One of my favorite exploits is in Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion, where you can stack Chameleon enchantments. If you enchant your helmet, cuirass, gauntlets, grieves, necklace, and ring with a low level chameleon enchantment (about 18-20%), that stacks, giving you 108-120% chameleon, rendering you completely invisible. It's cheesing the game, but I was a first time player and scared of dying in game.
Sea of Thieves does seem like the game to expect to be harassed by other players, but it's also not a game I'd play in the first place.

Min-maxing... yeah it really sucks depending on the game, it's made even worse when the game has no balancing whatsoever, like DMO(Digimon Masters Online), seriously, there's one big roster of digimon to get in the game... yet... only a handful of them are actually worth a damn, not to mention that every big raid in the game needs you to min-max, be lvl 99 with both Tamer and digimon and you MUST grind your fucking ass off to buy overpriced recovery items from other players.
Seriously, this game is so unbalanced that the Defense star in that game is completely fucking worthless and the one digimon who's focus would be to be a tank has a very small defense, which, by the way, is the one stat you can't artificially raise through cloning, so the only digimons with a defense worth a damn are literally fusions which means you gotta min-max 2 mons but BE CAREFUL, because, if i'm not mistaken, only one of them can be lvl 99.
And don't get me started on the bot problems... Jesus christ... that's a beast of it's own...
I get what you are saying chilled. I played a game called YGOPRO, it was a yugioh game where you have access to all cards, so you can make any deck you want. I loved the game but people had to variety, i had a dragon, machines, warrior decks ect... but everyone ran the same deck which was some XYZ deck. That deck was able to win on its first turn nearly every time. And if you survive more the. One round, no matter what monster you play, no matter what spell, trap, special effects you play they can negate it and destroy it. It killed the game for me and took the fun out of what yugioh was, have not played the game since.

Okay I am not very far into the video but I would like to but my two cents in on the broad topic of min maxing. Not just in Nintendo games but games as a whole. From a few different video essays on game development there is a quote from a gentleman who's name escapes me at the moment that says "given the opportunity players will optimize the way they have fun". Now this is in regards to players exploiting glitches but I believe the premise still applies. Every game has was to optimize how you play for the most benefits, what trades to make in monopoly IV and EV breeding in pokemon trying your hand at selling turnips in animal crossing and finding islands with the highest price etc. But at the end of the day I believe it is truly up to the player to make the decision on how deep into the rabbit hole they go. A personal example is how me and a friend play stardew, for me I wake up each day in game water my crops and determine the rest of the day based on needs for either relationships, or community center bundles or just what I feel like doing in that moment. Where as my friend dosen't talk to npc's he dosen't need to he has very specific crops and layouts that he uses to ensure that he can aquire as much money as possible. And for him that was fun and for me my way was fun. So I believe that min maxing is not an issue unless you make it an issue, there are millions of games to play and millions of ways to play them. So just enjoy games the way you want to enjoy them and don't bash others for doing things differently. Games are meant to be shared not gatekeeped. Any way that's my rant I doubt anyone will read this whole thing but if you do have a good day and stay safe

min-maxing is in essence taking all of a stat and maximizing it as much as possible. In Pokemon, min-maxing would refer to IVs (Trying to role for the best possible IVs so that you can overall get more damage out of it). In other games like, say, Path of Exile, it is when you grind a certain weapon to the point where you get the absolute best roles on modifiers and stats. For some, being even 1 point of attack, health, etc. is not good enough and they will keep grinding it out until they get the best possible.

See, I think Sea of Thieves could benefit from having people being able to team up and make group like guilds in MMOs. It could really help in creating situations where if a ship is an ally they can chat and board one another’s ship if they wanted to, or if they are an enemy the group put a hit on, then they could go out and hunt people and it might even give you some rewards in the process. Just need to report into a town to see any messages from these groups to see what’s been going on.

What the hell is min maxing
The Pokemon talk really made me realize how the game became like this recently. The joy of just playing through the story might have been lost due to some player's overly competitiveness.
The real problem is probably just be the vast number of Pokemon out there. Imagine a game with all 1000+ was it now? Of course there's gonna be a major powercreep, because for Gamefreak to actually make every Pokemon unique would be way more work than they deem worth.
@@ericlamb4501 You haven't followed the Pokemon news or googled it. Still not past 1000 yet and Gamefreak has outted half the pokemon list in Sword and Shield, that's how they dealt with powercreep. And the competitive scene is better, but if your favorite pokemon isn't in the game, tough shit.
