The flat $500k/player payout is a crazy smart incentive structure.... AND the fact that the games are spread out over a month and the games count towards record means the competitive juices keep flowing. It's really worked out to be a genius move.
Optimal outcome for any team: win this consolation prize cup and Finals in the same season. No one would want to win this one cup alone and get trounced out off the playoffs.
it's probably more about the 65 game limit for awards than it is about the in-season tournament. the 65 game limit literally has a trickle down effect that can influence players' contracts. awards are brought up in negotiations and used for leverage to get more money, having a 65 game limit for all awards will effect that - so star players are going out there every night and they're naturally competitive so of course they're going to try to win, because that can effect awards and contracts too. get the most games out of the way now in case you have to miss games later in the season for injury
The best thing the NBA did for these in-season tournaments was making them COUNT for the regular season record. That was my first concern was if they just made it a completely separate side show without impacting the regular season seamlessly if teams choice to not participate or participate lackadaisically.

He was a real PG and the offense flourished when he got to initiate it instead of letting the Jays bring the ball up slowly. Holiday is a better shooter but has a considerably higher turnover ratio, especially in the playoffs, the offense is looking good because the philosophy has changed regarding how they get their points ie: there's a lot more focus on the post this season with Tatum/Brown/KP when mismatches are available, not cause of one player swap. We can praise the current team without being dismissive of former players.
I'll admit, a month ago before the first games I absolutely HATED the idea of an in-season tournament. But now after seeing how these games have come down (and now that I actually understand how it works after reading the rules), it is 100% growing on me. I definitely see the difference in intensity of regular season games in November. I think for the future the NBA needs to tweak a few things like the COURT DESIGN and maybe even at some point but more of an incentive for the winner such as winning the tournament will guarantee a spot in the postseason. If they were able to somehow make that work, some of these tournament games would feel exactly like playoff games 🔥
I agree with the play-in creating buzz and excitement But it's definitely not the in season tournament that saved the regular season... the tournament literally makes no sense It was the leauges commitment to enforce the players commitment to basketball and their contracts via award eligibility minimums and the new CBA holding teams accountable for sitting out Stars!... these is what saved the regular season at least for the Die Hard NBA fans not entrenched in football season!
The reason I love NBA as a league over European football is primarily because of how adaptable they are. Play-in games, In-Season Tournaments, coaches challenge, take foul, Hack-a-shaq rule. The league isn't scared to adjust an adapt to new rules, while European football's rules are seen as sacrosanct so they cannot adapt it. As much as we NBA fans complain about the atrocious reffing at times, I still love the NBA and its still the highest quality of entertainment in sports.
you still play 82 games that nobody remembers or cares about except for some light entertainment for any given evening. Nobody remembers who had the best record, only who won the playoffs in the end.
@3:52 The rockets big #28 traveled on he way to the rim, but if the refs didn't see it then it's legal. But anyways, I think the Tournament courts are cool looking and are a part of the reason of hype that make the Tournament mean more. The courts colorful designs makes the environment more tournament vibes. And also, on top of the money, I think the team that wins the tournament should get an all expense paid trip for them and their immediate family members of up to 4-5 people or something to that effect.
BBallBreakdown is a big referee apologist so no point making this argument. Refs have penalised the rockets a lot recently seems a bit odd that the NBA wants the intensity of the playoffs but then are calling soft fouls like it’s the regular season
I hope they do a winner of the IST vs NBA champiom next year and start that tradition annualy as another trophy to get and as a reward/showcase of last years champs like in football
And need not be an "extra game" - just use the already scheduled home game of the champion vs Cup winner Or maybe schedule that match up for opening day...
James Harden is the better off the ball scoring weapon for catch & shoot 3-pointers in BOTH CORNERS. Common sense, 2-Guard Front. Westbrook pass across the top to Harden, then Harden pass to the & cut to the ballside corner. Pitchback to Westbrook at Top of Key to "Penetrate & Kick."
I think this season is contentious for a lot of reasons and the in season tournament runs parallel to that and should not get credit. Not even all games are part of it and the overall season standings are what people consider anyway.
The in season tourny has been great for competitiveness but those courts need to be fixed ASAP, had Jaylen Brown gotten hurt against Toronto from slipping, I would've blown my lid. Many other players in the game reported an unacceptable amount of slickness from that floor as well. Either fix this or use the regular courts.
Thought the in season tournament would be stupid but act fun to see guys locked in for the games instead of the usual early season games being pretty meaningless .
I like in season tourny as a concept but could be implemented better. I find the play in tournament quite pointless, last year's Heat is for sure going to be an outlier.
Lakers beat the Houston Rockets by 1 point (free throw made by Lebron James). This despite Dillon Brooks shooting 6 for 11 at 3-pointers. Lakers shot 6 for 29 at 3-pointers as a TEAM.
I feel like it's sort of the opposite the regular season has kind of been ruined by play in and in season tournament but at least they're trying to stop load management.
