They def got darker but they don't have as much soul/hop that they did before. That's what i miss, not mush, id like a bit balance but hey, things change.
Mezzanine was like a hero's coming-of-age journey for MA, like Robert hinted in an interview. That is truly the album in which they found and perfected their style. Blue Lines was too innocent/naive with Shara singing without a single care in the world, Protection was too abstract and dubby. Mezzanine was (and still is, by many accounts) their magnum opus. But tastes are subjective, and a Soul enjoyer will always prefer their earlier works over Mezzanine and later. To each their own. Whatever the case, all sides can reach consensus upon Massive's musicianship and its visceral delivery.
Very ignorant comment. Mushroom played a big, big part of the band. Less so on the Mezzanine album but he more or less was the musical director of 'Protection' and 'Blues Lines'. Unfinished Sympathy? It was MUSHROOM who got Shara Nelson to expand on the melody and came up with structure for it. He did more than just scratch.He was the Geoff Barrow of the group.
@@matthewwilliams8311 Ok, it's true Mezzanine was mostly influenced by 3D's punk desires, but Mushroom still did Black Milk on it, and it was a great track. Plus it was him who came up with Teardrop in the first place.
@@matthewwilliams8311 He seemed to be oscillating his time between New York and Bristol. I heard that he got quite ill after Mezzanine due to the trauma of the arguments with 3D so I think he's been having to deal with that. In terms of music, he probably DJs here and there.

@shnugen27
LOL we all know too well why they don't do this. Most every band they would play would sound horrible live.
@edAhurtado the downward spiral form NIN was more brutal.

I liked Mushroom as well although on the great scheme of things in the band O don't think he played a massive part musically or lyrically

@@bluefilmsltd I was talking more in the sense of Mezzanine
