There are many, many videos on here with David leading, those in which we all love, however this single video with Paul leading has to be challenged... Mr. Williams has always been underrated and underappreciated, and that is what cannot be disputed... Thank you Paul Williams for this wonderful lead.
It's not that he's unappreciated we gotta stop saying that ppl love Paul Its just David had better leads and dennis Edwards But ppl acknowledged Paul as a great singer
@@donnellfilms7893 Man you got my hopes up. That medley is Dennis Edwards not Paul. Dennis is singing very lightly. Softest i've heard him sing, actually. His voice just isn't made for My Girl, but he tried. Now songs like "Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Cloud 9," absolutely. But "My Girl" is better suited to David and/or Paul.
@@densincomprehend8879 Dennis's voice is too over powering. Paul and David have well controlled singing voices. Dennis is better suited for the Norman Whitfield psychedelic stuff (Cloud Nine, Can't Get Next To You, Ball of Confusion). He's just too loud for some of these ballads. Paul sounds about as close to David, as they could get. Different, but similar.
Paul sang to accommodated Bing's singing with them, Paul had CLASS. Bing was the Television Host, and he was giving them exposure to his T V LAND audience, persons who might not have otherwise listened to them
For those too young to know or remember, Bing mentioned the intro sounded like "Dardanella", a Dixieland song he song on an album, featuring duets with Louis Armstrong. Bing's first love was Dixieland, the New Orleans Jazz sound, etc. I know a bit about Bing, and this was from the Kraft Music Hall that he hosted when he was about 60+. Bing was dueting with the Temptations, and the "talking over the melody" originated with Louis Armstrong, chiefly. Bing complimented a great song by the group.
You're right. Dennis for some reason was never comfortable leading that song. He did it once on a TV special with the Supremes, but thereafter he relinquished the duty to Paul. And when Paul left the group, it was Richard who led the song. I wish Bing Crosby had shut up and let the Tempts sing. Paul sounded great.
Paul was so smooth! I love his swagger! I bet the ladies love him back in the day. His voice take him on a whole different level. I can listen to him talk or sing all day.
Paul did a very good job in singing David's part. He sang it like he has always sang the lead part. Man, they are missed soo much, but at least their legacy will never die.
What a treat! Bing Crosby, like Dean Martin, could sing with anyone on his radio and television programs. And The Temptations! Right up there with The Mills Brothers as one of the greatest male vocal groups of all time!
if yall didnt know thats the reason why you can hear paul after david in my girl because paul is too good hes the reason the temps made it, just listen to who do i turn to, and for once in my life live performance the man has the most emotional voice ever
Thanks for I wish I could see full video of whole show love this Paul Williams leading amazing singer love him so much talent, eloquent, sensational, inspirational singer gotta love him...love me Paul Williams......Xoxo xoxo..
The Tempts were all about putting out good music. Paul and David were great friends. Smokey understood what sound he wanted for this song. He never stopped believing in Paul. Once this song took off, a lot of the leads shifted to David, then Eddie, down to Paul. They were ALL great singers! Timing in life is everything. When this song charted, they stuck with this formula. Its no doubt in my mind that the leads could have been handled different. But who could argue with results?!
Aww you dudes need to realize that this was cool for its time. Bing Crosby gets my respect b/c he was a white cat singing w/ major black talent - Louis Armstrong hello? Remember that this country wasn't always cool with black and white on the same stage. Bing had his own vibe, but he was def a musician. Notice that he doesn't try to take over the song like most of the modern vocalists would try to do - he gives MAD respect to the Temptations musically, even though he himself was cool.
This is so good, love the temptations and this shows that Paul could have sang David's songs and been given more leads. R.I.P Paul, Eddie, Melvin and David
I don't think anyone in this context is forgetting color, which is why I have so much respect for Bing here. The message is not "I don't see color", but rather, "I love these people, and they happen to be black, so deal with it...oh and by the way I'm going to have fun up here too..." =)
Thank you for posting this rare and historical clip. Bing Crosby held his own with these legendary soul singers. This is a perfect visual example of how music can bridge any gap; racial, generational. and cultural.
All of them were 6’0-6’4. Am I the only one that look at their long feet and huge hands? They were real eye candy and they can sing as well they were the total package.
that was an amazing part when Bill said is that the intro? And Paul say yes LOL and he does that laugh and cool head nod. That part is amazing. Along with Paul singing with that heartwrenching sound along with Bill.
Smiles all around, right?! Agreed, definitely could not stop smiling watching this one... Just to see Paul sing & might I add do a little acting... Though cleary some of it was meant to be comedic he couldn't help but to sing it with heart, because that's all he knew, absolutely Love that from him. Absolutely love this, thank you so so much for posting.
Yes, holygroove2, you are correct about Bing-at various times in his long career, Bing highlighted Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, etc. on his Radio shows, variety shows, Movies (like "HIgh Society" featuring Louis Armstrong's whole band)-at a time when blacks didn't get exposure in media. I am obvously a BigBingFan, but recognize his contributions to forgetting COLOR and highlighting TALENT. I think he said his favorite female singer was Ella & Satchmo a favorite duet partner
Crosby was cool. Always open to the new music. Said of Elvis: "that boy's really got something". Said of The Beatles: "Some marvelous songs, lots of talent". Heard David Bowie, ("compelling performer") booked him on his last TV special (1977) and sang with him. Sinatra, Como, others put down the new sounds.....Bing embraced them. Gotta give him his due. He was a pretty hip dude.
Sinatra didn't like rock & roll much, but he did do a special with Elvis in 1960 and tried his hand at some more modern songs and styles (even made 2 disco records) during the '70s with mixed results. Tony Bennett, however, claims to have literally gotten sick when trying to sing modern songs.
Paul, when dancing with the temps looks short, although I know all the temps were 6ft. +. but next to Bing he looks really tall and extremely handsome. They all do.

Pete Peterkin to be fair My Girl would have been a hit with my garbage disposal on lead but Paul’s recalibration had me yelling in my garage just now.
