    I lived in Toton in 1982 off Carrfield AVE as a kid and I used to hear the clanking of the shunting trucks at night. I also heard the engines of class 20s too in the distance. It was a comforting sound to hear the still of the night being interrupted by the clanking of the coal wagons. Nice childhood memories. And from that I joined MML in 1997 and became a Train Guard😁Now I'm married to an ex Toton Driver Reggie Sargeant. It must be all those noises from the Depot 😆

      Really ? ! I was born on Portland road at top end before carrfield ave , left when I was 5 and parents split. (1969) but spent my school holidays till c 19678/9 at my grandparents on carrfield . ( Lea and Edna brooks - 63 ?🤔). Going to be a huge housing estate isn’t it on the fields etc ? 🤨😟

    I can remember in the early 70's getting off the bus in Sandiacre on the weekend and walking into Toton & walking around the depot for loco numbers (Not that we were suppose too), The Place was a hive for 20's, the odd 31, 37 along with 44, 45,46, 47's later 70's came the 56 & Class 58's in early 80's by the 80's it was a very difficult depot to get around & Class 58's rarely ventured out of the East Midlands Yorkshire area's mainly on MGR trains to Power Stations, Saw my last 58 (58047) on Leicester Depot in 1983, I was working near the base in 2019 & 2022 & viewed from outside the depot, Sadly it was full of Class 66 & 67 Locos, A Few 60's & a load of stored 60's on both occasions on the opposite side of the shed, I pass regularly on the A52 & still look at the depot on the road. The place still has loads of loco's on base.

    My favourite trains all there . The 08, 20, 37s. I commuted a lot in the 80s by train and always looked out the window at the sidings and so on, unlike folks today. Was surprised to see brake vans as thought they'd been phased out by then? As a kid we'd explore along local sidings and climb into old ones when no one cared where you went as much.

    That is excellent. Love the 08 moves at the start, with the constant sound of idling 20's. That was the sound track of Toton in my era. My first depot visit there was in 1974 on a spotters tour, 120 engines on shed and living in North Wales, one of the closest places to see 20's at the time.

      I started spotting in early 1974 when I was 10 at Leyland (5 miles south of Preston on the WCML). I vaguely remember when the electrification of the WCML had only reached Preston and happy Saturday mornings were spent at Preston station with my older brother watching the electric loco changes to diesel (class 50's usually) heading north, and diesel to electric heading south. There was a stabling point just south west of the station where electric loco's were stabled ready for their return south, which often had at least half a dozen locos parked up. Ladywell House to the north east of the station was the main stabling point at Preston however, where a variety of diesel classes were usually stabled. Over the next few years, as I grew older, I went on weekend "trips" (by train of course) to various places around the country. I remember going to Toton at least twice in the mid to late 70's and was always excited to spot locos I wouldn't see in my home area. Class 44's were always a favourite of mine at Toton. Happy days.................

    Some good Nostalgia there. TO was my home depot in the late 70s and early 80s. I would ride my Raleigh Grifter there 8.5 miles each way from my home. I would ride it right on to the depot on a Sunday and walk around unhindered. Great days. I remember the first large logo 56036. 58's weren't even out then an 44s were still knocking around.

      Yes indeed good days when there was not so much officialdom. They allowed me to film in the yard once with my camera on a tripod and in the middle of shunting duties. Mind you I was working on the railway then but try it now and you would be arrested straight away, even if you were on the railway....far too much "jobs worth" and H & S....Best regards to you and many thanks....Mark

    Brilliant, brought back memory's.There we're a lot more 03 and 08 shunters when I was a kid, and lots more mixed freight. So sad to see it as it is now, it's going to be "re-developed". Thanks for uploading.

      Many thanks Jason......Yes indeed very fond memories.......I loved riding in the old LMS Brake vans....I too sometimes rode with the guard from Millerhill Yard to Blair Atholl in the middle of the night just for a change being hauled by a pair of 20s what was then "The Whisky Train" back in the late 70s.......such memories we should cherish for ever....Best regards........Mark

    Shunting sure looked dangerous work!!!Hanging on to moving trains I'm sure it wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Did many accidents happen??!!

    • @spompey
      @spompey  6 років тому +4

      It was quite an art to master, probably the most trickiest part was uncoupling on the move and coupling, I never witnessed any bad accidents apart from the rare derailment or road spreading (Track coming apart) most shunters were very highly skilled and knew their location well. As far as I know these practices still go on and are within railway rules. My best regards to you....Mark

      Dear Mark After much researching through my archives I can almost 99% confirm this was Load Bank Test loco number ADB968023 a BR Departmental loco and was originally 84009 loco which I believe survived until the mid 1990s....Maybe someone out there knows more or can 100% confirm this. watch closely between 11.10 - 11,25 on this video....best regards....Mark
