I always enjoy your videos. Your enthusiasm & joy in fixing stuff, always comes thru. A labor of love. Much of this stuff is already difficult, yet you make it even much more difficult for yourself when you are recording it for us. - 73 Bob
Peter, thanks again for another great trouble shooting video. Although it was a simple fix in the end folks now know how to troubleshoot this in case there was a real problem. Well done my friend. I learned a while back to just reset the units when they come in. I had one on the bench for two weeks trying to find an issue. In the end it was a menu setting lol. Had me pulling my hair out. Thanks again for a very well explained video.
Even though no repair was required, it was still a very good fault finding and great demonstration of understanding the circuit diagrams. Keep up the great videos. Karl
Hmm, what a coincidence...I just checked out a FT-817 for an estate sale on my bench and fortunately it was working FB, lucky me! I had a suspicion about half way thru the video that it might be the issue you found, but it is so easy to look back when you're not in the hot seat and see a potential problem. Good job Peter, thanks for sharing, I always learn something new watching your great videos. 73 - Dino KL0S
Hi Dino, yeah when you are sitting on the hot chair things are sometimes different...but this is a nice example that an exception always confirms the rule! Thanks for watching Dino your opinion is always highly appreciated! 73
Hi Peter, No mater that the problem was a setting, that was a GREAT video. I learned a lot about the correct method to trouble shoot the system. If one of your goals is to teach your audience about how circuits work and how to logically close in on the problem you succeeded. Thank you for all of your hard work making these troubleshooting videos. You are a Master in your profession. Thank you again, John C.
What an amazing video. I would love to see the customer’s face when he reads the bill! “How much to change one setting”? HI Hi. You show again your extensive knowledge and great troubleshooting procedures. Well done Sir. 73’s Lynton
Thank you Peter. I always learn something from your videos. Today I learned two things. 1) How diodes are used as switches, and 2) Always reset the radio! hehe. '73, Mike Oh! And I also like those spring-loaded probes you use. The end sticks to the test point nicely. I'll have to get a set!
Great video explaining troubleshooting techniques. Always a help to me when I have to dig into equipment needing repairs. You can't know to much always more things to learn.
Suspected this (or a loosely installed optional filter) was the problem. Excellent video. Definitely not a waste of time, as I learned a lot about the system layout. Thanks much!
Very good electronic instruction thanks, ZL1ABR, I am retired electronic service technician I own all the FT-817 FT-857 FT-897 series Yaesu I also help my friends with service requirements when required, once again thanks for a very good video it is very good.
LOL. I was with you all the way - I can even imagine the om playing with the Menu option - set SSB option on. Then the radio stops working, so someone tries to re-flow the solder thinking something hardware has a loose connection. This was entertaining!
I must admit to had a little laugh at the end but I have learned a lot again from your work how to check everything so big thanks for that Peter! Marry Christmas and an happy new year to you and your love ones.
Ha-ha... Brilliant.. A lesson to all of us operating these modern rigs, but also a great lesson in diagnosis and fault finding.. If that had been me my Ärgermanagement-Therapeut would have been earning more $ that day than I did 😁😁..
I saw a perfect video. Unfortunately my English does not allow me to write to you correctly, but Google helps me. Thank you. Thank you for speaking very slowly. I understand 90% of what you express. I always follow you. Thank you again. 73 de Rick IW2OGQ
The outcome was more or less a surprise to me. Following your analysis i was thinking quickly, check the switching transistors, check them, check them.... to be really honest I would have gone and look circuit why the "piep-Ing." transistor was not switched on. And probably would have spend cloudless for hours ( gone to driving unit.... etc). Going to the Manuel and switching it on... brilliant! Thanks for this lesson.
I totally agree about the camera value. I recently bought my Sony HDR-CX210 at the pawn shop for 10 dollars American. Works perfectly. Yours does produce ggreat videos and has fast autofocus.
Thanks again for the nicely done video. It can be frustrating when this kind of situation arises but the next time it happens, you’ll verify that menu first. You will save time then and by posting this video you inform people of the potential issue. Again, I appreciate and enjoy everything you put on UA-cam. Well done as usual. 73 de VE2VHE
Peter, Good video !! What looked like that you might have had to replace a transistor or filter turned out to be debugging a program problem was a VERY GOOD SHOW !!!! and simple fix although we would have not thought so at first !!! Now I want to take this chance to WISH YOU and YOUR FAMILY "A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
Great video, thanks so much for doing them. I was betting on a bad diode myself. Being an I.T. guy, rule number one, is "don't trust what the user tells you"
Another fantastic video Peter! I had this exact same fault with a local ham operators FT-817. The power output indication when the non-existent filter is selected is a bit of a red herring. Obviously the power output meter does not sample actual RF at the antenna socket. :-)
Not wasted time at all, as Techs we have all been led down the garden path by mis-information, including myself..hihi.. Very thorough and great trouble shooting!!! Lloyd - W9NLA
Boy o Boy, I have been there Peter. I was ready to bin a Alinco until I had an idea that it could be a wrong setting. I must admit at least you had a good laugh about it. M3KQW , merry Christmas.
The test is successful in every case. Again, thank you brought us on this trip to find the error. The solution was easy, but that's always in life. If you know it. Thanks for the explanatory video. until next time. '73
It's close to a problem I have with a FT-857,, Everything works but the 2m SSB, I found it doesn't switch between 2m and 70cm. I believe it to also be switching diodes . Thanks for another great Video !!!
Wow, That was the long way around to that solution! I've had similar situations. What can you do but shrug your shoulders and move on. Well, we all know how to play a good April Fools joke on our fellow 817 owners now.
Peter, Fine video on troubleshooting a no repair. I bet you will have a few words for the OM about that menu setting. If it was a test, I would have a few stronger words. :-) WB3BJU
Menu driven radios can be a real pain in the rear. It can be hard enough for a owner to remember all the settings. When its sent to a shop for repair you have to learn how to use the radio. Great repair Peter, or should I say programming.
Wow!! How very frustrating but a really good learning experience 😀 I love your excellent videos and have learnt so much from watching them. 73...Ian Harling.G7HFS/PA3IKH.
"Nice" fault! Moral: always check for finger trouble first! Extra flux is not always a sign of "unauthorised" repairs. It is sometimes also a sign of FACTORY reworking (due to a poor soldering process during manufacture), and only discovered on test. Note also the extra flux on the filter legs. These and other delicate/expensive items are often fitted AFTER the board is soldered, in order to protect them from the radiant heat/hot air used to melt the SMD solder paste.
Peter very good work again. Looks like another operator error. Some may say you should have looked at menu first NOT ME. As you asked all the correct questions and got incorrect answers. Love your work 73’s VK3KZ/VK3TKQ
amazing retention of knowledge . It's one thing to read it but another to understand it and yet another to remember it . I lack in all three of those categories unfortunately but with that being said , as a business man you have to charge the customer for all you work . What happens when you hand him the Bill and tell him his menu was set wrong ? Great job though and great video . I wish I was as smart as you in Electronics !
Hi Peter. Nice video, even if the solution is a bit unsatisfying.... btw, the soldering of the transistor /double diode which is right under the big filter does not really look good (at least at the camera) You can see it in the video at around 46:28 on the right side, the one with 2 pins top and one on the down side. Anyway, have a nice Christmas and i hope you get some presents with more difficult faults ;)
My deepest sympathy goes out to all in Germany (Berlin in particular) for the terrible atrocity that has been recently committed. Especially at Christmas (although, such things should NEVER happen regardless of the time of year). Hope you are all ok your end. Concern and warmest regards (Wayne and Nina, England).
Although it is probably the owner or someone unbeknownst to the owner who changed the settings, I was wandering if some sort of electrical glitch could have changed the settings.
Hi, I like your approach to fault finding .... I envy your test gear! A friend of mine bought an FT-817 new from a dealer and paid to have a CW filter fitted....the dealer fitted the filter but failed to enable it in the menu....took a while to sort out! Steve G4EDG
A couple of years ago more like 4 now.We set up at field day operated until midnight, and a thunder storm came through while we were sleeping in the concrete basement of a TV transmitter site. Never could hear the storm when we woke in the morning all was dead no receive or transmit never did figure out what happened as the antenna never was hit. I still use the antenna today I'm gonna dig it out and see if a near strike scrambled the settings on the optional filter.Jim
In general, I find the ideas and comments of clients interesting, but not to be relied upon when it comes to eliminating possibilities. It is precisely because they overlooked something, or assumed something which was not true.. that they come to us for help !
What a refreshing video! A good lesson in "Look for the simple stuff first", or maybe for chasing a wild goose! Time spent in the shop is never a waste for me-- Especially when someone else is doing the work! Now, how do you bill the customer for this one? :-)
Loads of people say “do a reset” and that’d have worked in this case but not teach you what was wrong. Just resetting is as pretty much unscientific as one can get. Worth knowing that if the SSB filter is set and the filter isn’t there or gets dislodged (it is a mobile QRP radio after all) then there’s no output due to no audio path!
Good work Peter. I enjoyed the video. Those murata fioters are known to fail. I dont know if that probem has been solved for the new models. I have an 897d model for my go system. It is a new model and i have had no problems with it. We learn something new every day. 73 ve3hjl

I was thinking from early on the optional filter was on Well just goes to show some radio ops don't RTFM (read the F¥*$#*?G manual) also a cup reset should of put it back to original filter it think ! But thank for the loooong way to find a silly mistake Peter we have all done it and will do it again some time

The professor's spoken 😊
The filters are suceptible to corrosion on the plates, causing them to fail.
The C24 marked (white) is the discriminator.
Sounds like an issue with the balanced modulator.
But, this model has a quirky setup menu.
nice, generally in this case I charge one hour work as a test & troubleshooting fee to the owner with a "RTFM" remark on the invoice ^^
Although it is probably the owner or someone unbeknownst to the owner who changed the settings, I was wandering if some sort of electrical glitch could have changed the settings.
Well yes a glitch can do some funny things to electronic equipment but in this particular case I don't think so. Thanks for comment 73

WFM-Radio funktioniert.
Good work Peter. I enjoyed the video. Those murata fioters are known to fail. I dont know if that probem has been solved for the new models. I have an 897d model for my go system. It is a new model and i have had no problems with it.
We learn something new every day.

Thank you Henry! 73
I always see where you put the test leads but i don't understand where you put the ground lead.
If TP1071 has proper levels, then you have proper control voltage.
I still suspect a bad filter.
Oops commented on the wrong vide, great video though Peter, disregard the cosmic Ray's!
I hate to say this, but it would have been one of the first things I would have checked. 😉 I have the FT-817ND version.
LOL yeah I can't disagree....73
Got a good one for you my ft991 on vhf would rec ssb but would transmitt fm....On uhf ok ....hf ok they repaired it no charge oh i replaced the finals thanks to your viedos thank you kg6mn

ya keep up the excellent work
Theres a video on youtube some guy has a irf520n working on the output stage. On the ft817 id love to know how he's done it but its not in English.
Can i use a LAN CABLE (8pin) to connect MIC to TRX instead of the official cable that was broken?
I was thinking from early on the optional filter was on
Well just goes to show some radio ops don't RTFM (read the F¥*$#*?G manual) also a cup reset should of put it back to original filter it think !
But thank for the loooong way to find a silly mistake Peter we have all done it and will do it again some time
Thanks for watching Sam! 73
