    I always wondered where the heat and air conditioning came from for the seats. I asked myself all the same questions that you asked yourself and I didn’t have an answer. I typed the question as a search on UA-cam and your video came up and I thought it was great. That was a very interesting topic. I never would have guessed how climate controlled seats work. None of my cars have them. I was excited enough just to get leather seats for the first time in my latest acquisition.... lol. BTW, in regards to the pronounciation of the inventor's last name, you got it right. Most non-french speaking people mispronounce it.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  4 роки тому

      Marc Perras - yay! I’m always nervous about pronouncing names right. I like leather in a convertible, although cloth is probably coolest. Didn’t know the Honda’s came with leather. How’s it treating you?

      @marcperras9072 4 роки тому

      @@MikeFyxdt I haven't driven the S2000 that much since buying it as it badly needs new brakes (installing oem rotors and pads tomorrow). I would have thought the leather seats to be stickier than they are on hot days but so far so good.
      In regards to French names, most of the time they get "Anglified" or Americanized into something unrecognizable in French. For instance, the S at the end of my family name is silent, I often find myself explaining it when asked to say or spell my name in English.
      Interesting tidbit about Peltier: he is buried at Père Lachaise cemetery, the most visited cemetery in Paris. I doubt, however, it's because he's buried there. Most North American tourists visit to see Jim Morrison's and/or Oscar Wilde's burial site. Well worth the detour if you ever go to Paris.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  4 роки тому +1

      Marc Perras - LoL, yes we Americans tend to pronounce names phonetically, in whatever State dialect we speak. New brakes sound like a good idea before tooling around in the new sports car! Wait, is Jim Morrison really dead? 🧐

      Great question! I’ve never had one fail, but I found a Ford service bulletin that says the fans are far more likely to fail than the TED itself, in a climate controlled car seat application. Since the TEDs are solid state I’d expect them to last a long time.

    My 2016 cooled seats never worked well and I read on forums about a tsb to replace the fan with an improved version. I took it to the ford dealer and it was changed under warranty. I don't think it made a difference but at least I have the latest part.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  4 роки тому

      Hi Tom - When I was researching for this, one of the first resources I found was a Matt Maran video from several years ago where he talked about the problem the pre-2018 models had with the seat climate control units. I'm glad they got it figured out and I'm glad you have the latest part. Mine DO work, but it is not like the blast of polar air you get out of the AC vents. It definitely makes a difference though! I'm going to want these in my next vehicle...

    Great video. These devices have always intrigued me. I have a simple device that uses the heat difference to turn a fan on our wood stove at our remote cabin. I have an abundance of 12VDC power there and have been thinking of building some kind of cooler to put in the propane fridge. . I have some nice deep finned aluminum heat sinks off surplus communications equipment that I salvaged. Damn it another project.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  3 роки тому +1

      Chris, there’s always another project waiting to be done! Using a Peltier device in refrigeration containers is fairly common with these little automobile beverage chillers. I don’t know what would be required to do something on a larger scale. The challenge is usually that these devices create lots of heat on the other side, so the heat sinks need to be away from whatever you are trying to keep cold. Actually, it sounds like a fun project to engineer. Please check back and let us know if you try this and what you did!

    Great video Mike! I have the same setup on my '17 ecoboost convertible. I would agree with what some posters have already stated here - when it comes to cooling the bottom of the seat seems to work good while the backrest portion doesn't really do anything. Never really tried the heated seats since we store the car in the winter.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  4 роки тому +1

      Don G - I wonder if they beefed up the backrest cooler in the 2018+ because I can feel mine. But (no pun intended) the cooling is much more prominent in the seat bottom. Maybe it is a more temperature-sensitive region? The IR camera shows cooling in the seat back, but it definitely looked several degrees chillier on bottom cushion.

I had a '06 Lincoln Zephyr with cooled seats and they got way too cold some times, so I know Ford uses a TED for cooling. Not sure why you say it's a bad idea to run the air conditioning on when the roof is retracted. On a hot day in my Ford I run the air conditioning constant that doesn't hurt anything. It makes no difference if all the windows are open, or if the sunroof was retracted. I think it's just a mental block that people feel it's a waste of energy. And perhaps it is a waste but it's certainly not harmful to the vehicle, and it's only as harmful to your pocket as running it constantly with the windows up and the roof top on which occurs all the time
