      Agree on slightly better range (looks like 5-7%) but the quad motors is just too good of a hardware thing if you're into performance. Getting this in a vehicle under $100k is truly impressive.

    So, that's nice, but how does the torque vectoring work on the dual? How does it perform in split mu or wheel off the ground conditions? How does the front/rear split work in normal and performance driving?

  • @Eric-xp1kl
    @Eric-xp1kl 11 місяців тому +1

    Would love to see the Quad unit and Dual right next to each other. The Dual which is actually a single motor looks larger than the Bosch unit? Also, there is really, very little additional range or efficiency with the Dual option. Quad still looks like the best overall value and experience.

    @RivianOfficial - any plan to apply the dual motor drive unit enhancements to the quad motor drive units?

  • @ROBSAB055
    @ROBSAB055 Рік тому +6

    So can you basically simulate a locking diff with the dual motor? So you’re less reliant on the computer making the right torque decision and have a more traditional off-roading driving experience?

    • @roland9367
      @roland9367 Рік тому +5

      What do you mean by the dual? Because in their case the "dual" only has one motor per axle, with a diff (like most EVs) and thus it isn't that much different from a fuel car, needing to deal with an open diff or replace it with some locker or LSD.
      Their quad motor, having a motor for each wheel, allows for unlimited torque vectoring. It could in fact act as a complete difflock by outputting the same torque and same wheel speed. But they won't do that, because they can do even better than that, by deciding the torque and wheel speed per wheel.
      But yeah, in theory they could make it behave like a difflocked vehicle. Even up to the point it could act as a vehicle with 3 difflocks (old school 4x4) and putting strain on the steering on dry grippy surfaces. There isn't really a reason to do that with a motor per wheel.

    The Dual Motor Enduro drive unit looks even larger than the quad drive unit. Why can't the Max battery pack I pre-ordered come with the quad drivetrain I also pre-ordered? Is that still a possibility? RJ mentioned during the IG live feed that they were still working on that.

    • @degnarius
      @degnarius Рік тому +3

      Oh it can and it will, just not for the price you pre-ordered at. That was the reason for cancelling it.

    • @TheMidIslander
      @TheMidIslander Рік тому +3

      I had been a longterm max pack preorder holder until the quad version was put more or less put back through R&D to add in more capabilities this past christmas. During RJ's Q&A a few weeks ago, he showed a Quad setup on a durability dyno. I'm going to guess that's the one that will end up in the Quad Max. I ended up giving in to temptation and shifted to a Quad-Large R1T and honestly, it's been incredible. I'm currently sitting in it, at a ferry terminal typing this. "IF" you are okay with the 450-500km the large pack offers, I would make the move. You won't regret it.

    • @HenryBabcock
      @HenryBabcock Рік тому

      Yeah I was a long time hold out for the Quad Max that I ordered (originally Explore package as well). But they kept gimping it in small ways and eventually cancelled it, so that now switching to dual Max just doesn't make sense for the smaller than initially promised range gain, and losing 2 motors and several drive modes. When I got shop access a couple months ago I eventually found my ideal config (for a quad Large) as a price even lower than my early pricing because it's a Launch Edition, and the value proposition there is just too great. I plan on doing some towing, so would I like more range? Of course, but there is no better value available for me than the truck I'm buying. I should be picking mine up next week. Can't wait.

    Is the performance version hardware, software, or both. If it’s just software, would you be able to add it at later date if you so desired? I would expect adding it at a later date to be a little more expensive than getting it as part of the original truck.

      I am driving a Mach-e GT with 50k on ODO. Time is on my side!
      I do take cars on track so quad-motor would be nice as it work like an LSD. I was a regular in Refuel EV time trial pre-Covid.
      Max-pack give flexibility for long travel. With freeway driving up above 80 mph on part of Utah, I am not expecting more than 2mile/kWh. 330-350 miles range will give flexibility on charging locations (including down chargers detours).

    I’ve asked Rivian to switch from the quad to dual motors, but a Rivian rep told me that the post March 1, 2022 pricing would apply, which is more expensive than my current quad motors pricing of $75k. Although I was expecting Rivian to give me some credit for the switch which saves them money as I really don’t need all that power. I’ll keep it and hope to start the delivery process before interest rates start going up again.

    I would actually rather have the duel motor, and install a “real” locking differential in the diffs. In theory the quad motor could mimic a locker or even perform better, but in real life it does no such thing and gets confused or hesitates or won’t let you spin tires. Epic software fail. Just write a line of code : wheel speed left = wheel speed right.

    • @bob15479
      @bob15479 5 місяців тому

      Your code suggestion can’t be implemented because speed depends on both input power and resistance which varies unpredictably.
      But we agree the bottom line is quad motor sucks.
      They could send the same power to each wheel but then they’d make the tire shredder 4000

  • @WilliamAArnett

    All that fancy engineering and they still can’t do a basic locker?

    • @roland9367
      @roland9367 Рік тому +2

      They don't need a locker with a motor per wheel.

    • @WilliamAArnett
      @WilliamAArnett Рік тому

      @@roland9367 They don’t need a mechanical locker but they do need to make all four wheels spin at the same rate. That can probably be implemented just with software. But as it is today they don’t do that and it works very badly.

    • @roland9367
      @roland9367 Рік тому +1

      @@WilliamAArnett Do you have any proof videos of that? The videos I've seen it was crawling quite well with a lot of grip.
      By the way, all wheels spinning at the same speed is not the end goal, the end goal is to put the torque to the surface. Sometimes a bit of wheelspin is actually useful. But then the computer would really need to understand the surface properly.
      Fixing the wheel speed firmly like you would have with 3 difflocks would only put strain on the steering rack I guess. And it would start to work like an old school 4x4, which would have quite some grip but no more computer assisted traction control.

    • @WilliamAArnett
      @WilliamAArnett Рік тому +1

      @@roland9367 I don’t have any videos hardly but a quick search on UA-cam will find them. Kyle Conner has one from a year ago. Others have demonstrated the problem with roller ramps. The bottom line is that when one or more of the wheels has no traction then no torque goes the the one(s) that do have traction. Exactly the opposite of what is needed. It seems that the only way to deal with such situations is to go fast. And that’s an invitation to breaking something.
      Sure there are lots of further optimizations that could be done. And should be. But a simple “software locker” would be a 90% solution while they work on doing better.
