Although IDK what got torn out, new beds/ berms are always exciting! What’s the broadleaf shrub behind Greg @ 15:11? If you’re going to do water features, DO NOT use liner in the lowest spots, to avoid hydrostatic pressure under liner… or at least have under drains which daylight elsewhere. You can use just underlayment fabric and rock on top of it- letting the water percolate upwards through the fabric. I’m a Certified Aquascape Contractor, and I’ve seen hydrostatic pressure under liner lift massive boulders (and have to fix up) some crazy water features. I think there are a few CACs local to you as well.
That's Osmanthus fragrans f. aurantiacus 'Butter Yellow' and it is just about to start opening up here now. A bunch of our Osmanthus are already blooming and it smells absolutely delightful everywhere you go in the garden. It's great time to visit the JCRA!
I have no sentimental attachment to any part of this garden as I was only more recently introduced by Jim Putnam, so I have only excitement for the new designs and plants to come ❤
Gardens (like people) are a process, not a product. They continuously change and evolve in the short and long term - the plants are always growing, after all. We're so grateful you're with us watching with excitement as our Arboretum gets better and better every single day!
Greg. Great tour. U hit upon this a bit but do u have a list of nursery suppliers for the more rare and unusual plants? With the loss of Heronswood and Asiatica I have given up trying to obtain collector plants. This tour got my juices going 😂. I’ve said this for 50 years. I can never understand why there is such a disconnect between plant developers and the general populace who want the plants. It’s a shame that so many things are impossible to find pinus bungeana ‘Silver Ghost’ in a suitable size for example. I appreciate any suggestions and thank u again for a delightful walk through. Love what u are doing

Hovenia dulcis is one of my favorite trees - happy to see one going in! The bark is nice on older specimens, and the fruits are a fun novelty.
