  • The shift tube bushing in my 65 Thunderbird hardtop was completely missing, in this video I install a new one. Sorry for the confusion mid way through the video...I completely forgot to show cutting the new bushing, so I did an insert video clip.
    Because of the limited space available It is very difficult to video this procedure, so I just have to explain how I did the install.

    Welcome to Jamieson's Repair Shop!
    My current retirement project is restoring a rusted out 1965 Thunderbird convertible from the inside out.
    I'm taking it apart, repairing everything that needs repairing and putting it all back together.
    I'm doing body work, paint removal, rust removal, metal fabrication, welding, forming, patching, and that's just the beginning!
    Down the line there will be interior and engine work as well.
    Come on into the shop and take a look!

      There are two NOS shift lever springs for sale right now on EBAY "NOS FORD C5SZ-7B071-B 1965-66 THUNDERBIRD AUTOMATIC SHIFTER LEVER RETURN SPRING", listed by hotrod31, with 100% feedback.

    Hi Alvin,
    I recently done the bushing on mine while the engine was out.
    I thought the bushing was missing too ,but upon investigation it had worked its way up the shaft a couple of inches.
    I got it back down by pushing it from the inside, looked to be in good condition so lubed it back up and re-installed it as per Nicks video from Vintage thunderbird.
    Seems to be working fine.

      Hi Steve...that's the time to do this fix if you can, I'll be doing that to the column for the convertible before putting it back in the car. 😊

    Hey Alvin, nice video. Looks like your shift linkage may also need attention, they all do. The shift linkage on these cars are not very durable and wear out quickly. I guess this is mostly because of the cheap plastic bushings they use and the heat from the engine and trans destroys them. I have a video showing my idea of a repair but I think its not the only way to fix them and may not be the best way either. However, it does work. Engine sounds pretty healthy. I like your fender light fix, I think Ill try that on my car when I get around to doing something to it. Are you going to the VTCI international show in Kansas City on August 10-14? Ill be there and John keeps threatening to go too. I hope so. Keep up the good work.

      Thanks Nick! I watched your video, and when out and bought the same wiper motor mounts...this is definitely on the list of things to do. I wish I could go to the VTCI, it would be cool to see, however, we will be driving back from Nova Scotia around that time. I would be great to see you guy! 😎😎

    Alvin,
    I haven't bothered to eyeball that bushing as the shift mechanism is pretty tight, but do believe it's a definite to-do item in the near future. Thanks, my friend.
    Regards,
    John

    Today I pulled the left splash shield off of my 64 hardtop... I hope you went ahead and replaced the 3/8" piece of rubber fuel line. Just like yours, mine had the original hose with crimp clamps from the factory. Three years ago I was driving a 66 Bird from Florida to Kansas City and the car started having fuel starvation. I checked everything I could, in a parking lot in a small town. Got so bad, had to have it towed to my brother's house which was less than a hundred miles away. We worked on in his shop. The culprit was that little rubber fuel line behind the left splash shield. It was original and had dry rotted (ethanol fuel didn't help) and the pump was sucking air from the cracks in that little rubber hose.

      @J_R_Shop  Рік тому

      Most definitely an issue with those old rubber fuel lines, they don't play well with ethanol! Lol
      I do change them out, I am fortunate enough to be able to still get premium fuel without ethanol, so that's all I burn in my gas powered vehicles, and small equipment...I hope that fuel will always be available!

    I had to get a new brake booster and master cylinder so the folks that I got those items from asked about my shifter. (64 Tbird) Yep it's sloppy so I got the repair kit from them. The instructions are NOT very good. And I'm only a few years older than the car so.....Been a LONG time since I worked on something like this. Whole lot of Grrrrrrrr going on here. That's what the instructions say. Remove the Driver side hood hinge. I'm not so sure of that now. I had to R&R the fuel pump and some of the videos I watched said I had to remove the Power steering assembly to do that but I found it was easier to go from the bottom. Getting it out seriously stunk but getting it back in was actually fairly easy. I don't know why. But the car is testing me............

      If you are replacing the master & booster, I would definitely do the shift tube bushing at the same time...you will have plenty of room to work on the shift tube with the booster out of the way.

    Hiya Alvin!
    Why would anybody watch anyone else’s channel? Looks like your kickin the tail of these thunderbirds, and making them behave! Lol
    And sometimes the cussing and creative swear words do intimidate the task to do what your trying to accomplish lol
    As always looking forward to your next video!

      Lol...thanks Troy! I really need to get back working on the convertible, she's looking kinda lonely!
      This new hardtop needs a new front floor pans...so it looks like a bead rolling video coming up soon! 😀

    Hi Alvin, where did you connect the fuel hose to get gas into engine? did you ever get to fix the shift linkage? do you have a video for that? i think my 66 tbird has the same problem, it's off a bit. taking my time with 66 tbird, but i really hope to get it to run and drive soon! 🙂What kind brake fluid is required for a 66 tbird? thank you! 🤩

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  2 роки тому

      Hi Laszlo, I connect to the suction side of the fuel pump. I haven't adjusted the shift linkage yet, because I'm thinking of removing the C6, installing a cruise O matic, then it will be back to original... I'll adjust the linkage then.
      Any DOT 3 brake fluid...and if you're bleeding the brakes, the cheapest DOT 3 is just fine.

    Anyone know how to get that inner fender off? I got all the bolts off but it still won't come off. Is it glued or something/

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  9 місяців тому +1

      They are not glued, bolts only...check to make sure you have the ones up near the shock tower, you may have to scrape off some undercoating to expose the bolts.

      @@nishali3343 after you install the new shift tube bushing, you may have to adjust the neutral safety switch, but that's way to do.
